Nine Favorite Things | halfbakedharvest.com

(my favorite little sister)

Happy summer everyone! I know the official first day was Friday, but either way, it’s SUMMER! Of course, it’s beyond cold up here in the mountains again. However, I’m going to just ignore all this snow and pretend that it’s not freezing here. Instead, I think we should talk about all things summertime…4th of July, family vacations to Costa Rica, and everything else in the world that I am excited about it!! First up is my summer bucket list! I shared a bucket list with you all last summer. To be honest, I think I did maybe one thing on that list? I don’t know, but it was unrealistic.

This summer I have only one item on my list, Costa Rica with my family in less than 2 weeks!! I’m excited…and stressed. Excited because we’ve never been to Costa Rica, and the entire family is going. Stressed because vacation for a week means so much work beforehand. Consequently, I have a huge week ahead of me. Creating new recipes, finishing up projects, and getting everything organized before a week away out of the country. It’s going to be A LOT. Therefore, fingers crossed I can get it all done.

Those of you who’ve traveled to Costa Rica, please let us know the places you loved and would recommend visiting. Is there anywhere we have to make sure we go, and anywhere we just have to eat. We’re flying into Liberia and staying in Playa Ocotal in Guanacaste. I would love to hear any recommendations if you have them!

We’ll be spending the 4th in Costa Rica, so I’m hoping to pick up some BBQ food to throw on the grill. The next day is my oldest brother’s birthday. I’m thinking my Nonnie’s 6 ingredient peanut butter ice cream cake will be perfect. Of course, we’ll also need mixers to make our favorite summer drinks. So excited! What are your 4th of July plans? Are there any recipes you NEED me to share?

Coming up this week on HBH, we will really be focusing on 4th of July recipes. I’ll be sharing an easy appetizer for a crowd, a very summer salad, a pasta filled dinner, the first sweet peach recipe of the season, and much more! So excited about all the summer produce!

Lastly, if you missed anything from the past week, be sure to sign up for our newsletter here. Hope you’re all having the best weekend, and enjoy this Sunday’s Nine Favorite Things!

1. HBH in the Kitchen…our New Cooking Series.

Tomorrow we’ll be kicking off our new summer cooking series, HBH in the Kitchen. Do you remember when I was in LA a few weeks back? Well, I was working on this very exciting project. I spent four back to back days filming this mini-series. I’m SO excited to finally be sharing the videos and details with you guys. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out eight brand new videos on Instagram. In addition to new recipes, there will be an exciting new guest with each video. It’s going to be so much fun. I can’t wait to see what you all think!

These videos are a bit different than the usual videos we share. Instead of an overhead, hands-only style video, you’re actually going to get to see my face! Of course, this makes me nervous, but it’s OK, because I’m more excited than I am nervous.

The details…

I’m cooking up new recipes alongside friends who are truly inspiring me every day. We’ll be making both new and old recipes, sharing the step by step process, all of my tips and tricks, and having fun conversations in between. What’s even more fun? Each guest is so different from the other. We’ll be cooking with chefs, bakers, fashion designers, actors, and entrepreneurs. So many fun and different guests!

I had the best time filming these videos and I’m certainly excited to see what you guys think! The first video will be up tomorrow on Instagram and YouTube, so be sure to follow along.

4. Questions of The Week:

q: Do you enjoy having social media being such a big part of your professional life?
a: I think like most people I have a love-hate relationship with social media. For the most part, I honestly love it, especially IG. I LOVE getting to connect with everyone through comments and DM’s. Seeing all the photos and videos of recipes you all are making is my FAVORITE. I love going through my DM’s at night. I try to get through as many as I can…usually staying up waaaay too late… because I just love talking to you guys and answering your questions! It’s so fun for me!! Sharing more of the behind-the-scenes with you guys and making recipes on Stories is the best. It takes a lot of time, but I have a lot of fun. I’m also excited about the IGTV vids that we have coming out soon!

The part I hate is the pressure I constantly feel to have to share stories, post, and always have new content. Overall, I really love creating and sharing, it just can be very overwhelming at times. I’ve certainly not found a good balance…at all, but it’s something I’m trying to work on.

q: Are you a makeup gal? And have you ever struggled with breakouts?
a: No not at all! I wear very minimal makeup and prefer a much more natural look. CC cream or light foundation, thick brow, mascara, and a nude lip. Very simple.

In contrast, I am hugely into skincare. I love brands like Honest Beauty, Biossance, Sunday Riley, Drunk Elephant, Summer Fridays, Beauty Counter…there are so many!

I was lucky as a teen and didn’t have many breakouts. But unfortunately, I occasionally get them now, and they are definitely annoying 🙁

q: Does anyone cook for you?
a: Haha!! Nope! But it’s more because I’m a control freak and really just LOVE cooking for others. It feels especially weird to have someone cook for me. Like super weird.

q: What are your thoughts on having your own cooking show?
a: 100% all for it.

  1. Hi Tieghan,
If you like Sunday Riley, Drunk Elephant and Biossance, I think you might also like Deciem/The Ordinary skincare (https://theordinary.com/?a1=en&a2=ca). Their prices are outrageously cheap and any Pinterest search for them will show you a VERY loyal fan base. Forgive me, I know I sound like a spokesperson – I’m not, just a convert, haha ;))) . Happy Sunday!

  2. Enjoy your trip to Costa Rica – Playa del Coco was where we took our first trip to CR. In July, it will likely rain every afternoon for a little while so keep that in mind when planning your day. Otherwise CR is a beautiful country to enjoy. The food is great, but I avoided beef there – it was tough and didn’t taste that good, but the seafood was delicious

  3. You should try Ginger’s in Playa Hermosa- it’s an easy drive from Playas del Coco, and the food was awesome. Also recommend La Casita de los Mariscos for fresh seafood in PH. And while you’re there stop by the Bosque del Mar hotel just down the beach- they have resident howler monkeys that hang out by the pool every day. So fun to watch (and listen to!).

Are you visiting anywhere besides Guanacaste while in CR? Highly recommend visiting Monteverde if you have time- really lovely area at a higher elevation. We visited the hummingbird gallery and visited the cloud forest, where we got to see the resplendant quetzals, trogons, more hummingbirds, vipers, wild orchids, etc. The restaurant at the Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was one of the best meals of my trip- try the octopus if you go, it was divine.

If you head down the pacific coast, stop by Hotel Villa Caletas- the view is awesome and the restaurant is great. And that pool!! Wow. And Graffiti Restro Cafe & Wine Bar in Jaco was very good.

If you happen to head down to Quepos (near Manuel Antonio NP), I really loved Cafe Milagro for breakfast/ coffee and Karola’s for the best coconut margaritas and delicious food.

All that being said, the local sodas anywhere in CR will get you a cheap and solid meal of rice/ beans/ meat. Hard to go wrong if you want a simple delicious meal. And try some local ceviche while you’re there- it’s sooooo good!

    1. Wow all of these suggestions are amazing! I need to send these over to my family so we can all check it out! Thank you Amy! xTieghan

  4. Oh my gush, third post, so sorry, but I have a lot to tell you today 🙂 You asked about what we are into right now.. and I am always into fish and shell fish. I was searching your website for white fish recipe ( think halibut or other flaky white fish) and most of the fish was hidden in tacos 🙂 I know you love salmon, but what about other fish? I know Denver has some amazing fish restaurants and sushi popup stations are at every ski resort now 🙂

    1. No worries haha! I will look into more recipes with some fish, not in tacos or wraps! Glad you gave this suggestion, thanks Nikki! xTieghan

  5. Costa Rica is beautiful and the people are so friendly! We did a snorkeling/ sunset cruise which was fabulous. We got to see so much Beautiful scenery and wildlife. Best of all were the many dolphins who swam along the boat for a long time! Not to mention the gorgeous purple and pink sky at sunset. We also did a deep sea fishing excursion. My husband caught a huge mahi mahi! I’m not a fisher woman but really enjoyed it! Have fun!

    1. Wow that seems absolutely amazing!! I cannot wait to see all of those things! Thank you Melissa! xTieghan

  6. Oh, and thank you for Asparagus link!! So obsessed right now! love them so much that I cant’ wait till lunch and often start my day with roasted asparagus topped with poached egg.. Mind-blowing!

  7. Man, what a bummer with your weather this year.. So excited for you to go to Costa Rica, you so need to soak in that sunshine and spend some quality time with your family! I know you are stressed, but look at it that way: that stress will fuel your energy and you will get right on doing all that work, and then you will be done and relaxing on the beach ( have never been to Costa Rica, so no recommendations there :-))
You little sister is so cute!! she is growing up so fast!!
Wanted to thank you for Candace Nelson’s link to podcast! I am so in love and obsessed now too– Loved her podcast with Katie Lee! And that got me thinking that I need to listen to more of your recommendations on podcast, I remember couple Sunday Nine Favorite post where you gave the whole list of them.. but it’s kind of hard to find the list of Sunday post on the website. You give such fun links on skincare, fashion, decorations and other info.. and it’s hard to find them after Sunday has passed through. Is it possible to add another tab/page at the top of the site where you change from recipes to another tab where you can store some of “other” interests?

    1. Hi Nikki! There is a whole section on the homepage called Nine Favorite Things. It’s the last section on the home page. Scroll all the way down towards the bottom and then just click on the words – Nine Favorite Things. You can also put the word “podcasts” into the search bar in the upper right corner of the site. Here is was what came up when I did it, and all of these posts mention podcasts…
