Meet Tieghan

TIEGHAN GERARD

The recipes you’ll find here are inspired by the people and places I love most. I come from a family of ten, and a big family means BIG meals. In an effort to tame some of our mealtime chaos and get dinner on the table at a respectable hour, I began to help cook. I soon realized how much I enjoyed it, and before I knew it, I had taken over cooking our meals full-time. I captured the process in photos and documented my best recipes, and that’s how Half Baked Harvest was born.

I spent the first 14 years of my life in Cleveland, Ohio until my family moved to the very snowy mountains of Colorado. I now live in a converted horse barn and work out of a studio barn that we built next door. It is a special place that I was able to design entirely around my lifestyle. It’s where I shot my third cookbook, and where I spend my days experimenting with new recipes, photographing my creations, feeding my family, and making one giant mess in the process. My hope is to inspire a love for food in others, as well as the courage to try something new!

I started this blog in 2012 and have since been featured on The Cooking Channel, Food Network, HGTV, Crate & Barrel, Shape Magazine, Self Magazine, the Huffington Post, and PopSugar, among others. Half Baked Harvest was named Readers’ Choice Favorite Food Blog by Better Homes and Gardens in both 2014 and 2016. It was also the recipient of Saveur Magazine’s 2016 Award for Most Inspired Weeknight Dinners as well as the 2016 Bloglovin’ Best Food Blog Award.

HBH FAQs

How did you come up with the name Half Baked Harvest?

One day, when I was 16, my mom and I were hiking together. She was encouraging me to start a food blog since all I did in my free time was cook! She came up with the “half baked” part of our name – because my family is very “half baked”. And by that I mean we’re a little all over the place and crazy! I’ve just always loved the word harvest, so Half Baked Harvest it was!

Do you use any filters on your photos?
I never use them on my food photos or videos. I like food to look like actual food and hopefully look extra delicious. I love the Tezza app for creating fun edits on other photos and videos.

How do you clean cast iron?

I use Staub products which are enamel coated, so I have less issues with sticking. I simply rinse with hot water and use a soft scrubbing sponge if needed. I use lots of oils when cooking which helps with sticking, I also never have to worry about seasoning them.

What do you use to shoot your content?

I shoot IG videos with my iPhone but I use a Canon 5D Mark IV for photos, and I only shoot with natural light.

Where do you shop for ingredients?

I buy from Whole Foods and Kroger, or online at Amazon and Thrive. I always try to link the recipe ingredients with the products so you can see what I use.

How many siblings do you have?

I have 7 siblings…6 brothers and 1 sister. Here we are in order: Creighton, Trevor, Brendan, Tieghan, Malachi, Red, Asher, and Oslo.

Who is Oslo? Olso’s Birth Story

Oslo is my little brother that was adopted at birth. His story is on the blog.

What state do you live in? Do you live with your family?

I live in Colorado. My family lives near me on the same property. I have my own house, and the studio is where I cook and photograph content.
