Sharing a fun twist on everyone’s favorite cheesy sandwich, with this Garlic Naan Grilled Cheese. Homemade naan bread, garlic butter, fresh herbs, and cheddar cheese are all cooked together to create a simple, but delicious grilled cheese sandwich. It’s garlicky and buttery on the outside, full of cheesy goodness inside, and takes just 15 minutes to make. This twist on the classic is truly SO delish. Best enjoyed with your favorite bowl of tomato soup, or simply eat as is. Great for lunch…or dinner…any day of the week!
You guys remember last week’s garlic herb butter naan? You do, right?
Well, I turned that naan into a very simple grilled cheese, and well, I am very into it. This may just be one of my simplest recipes yet, but when I thought it up last week while hiking, I knew I had to make it. Sure, someone out there in the world has probably already made a grilled cheese using naan bread, but I personally have not. So I checked that off my list, and am now sharing the idea with all of you.
Also, I might have a slight addiction to naan. I’ve been incorporating it into so many recipes the last few weeks. It’s currently my favorite bread recipe…for sure.
With life being as busy as it’s been the past few months, I’m on the lookout for delicious easy recipes. Sometimes that means big salads, instant pot pastas, and sheet pan dinners. Other times it’s just a good ole grilled cheese. Preferably with some tomato soup, but honestly soup or no soup, grilled cheese is always the best.
Especially when made with naan. Which really just feels like a fun, garlicky, herby twist on a childhood favorite.
Here are the details.
Find yourself some naan bread. This is obviously my favorite recipe, but store-bought naan works great too.
Now, mix together a little garlic herb butter with fresh garlic and fresh herbs. Spread the butter on one side of the naan and top with cheese on the other. I used a mix of sharp cheddar and buttery Havarti, but you can really use whatever cheese you love most. Anything works as long as it’s a melting cheese.
Heat your skillet, pan cook the naan until the cheese inside has melted, and the outside is golden and slightly crisp. As the cheese melts on the inside, the garlic on the outside slowly begins to caramelize. The butter turns toasty, and the herbs fry in the butter.
I always finish my grilled cheese sandwiches with a drizzle of honey and a pinch of flaky sea salt. It’s my little trick that makes a grilled cheese better than any other you’ve had before. Trust me, the honey + sea salt is a MUST (it’s honestly beyond words how good it is).
As I mentioned yesterday, the whole reason for the creamy Moroccan tomato soup was because of this naan grilled cheese. But soup or no soup, this grilled cheese is going to be amazing!
If you’re looking for some greens, I recommend a very simple side salad. Arugula or kale with fresh lemon would be delicious. Something like this lemony arugula.
The best part? If you have naan and cheese on hand, this can be made in 15 minutes or less. Just 15 minutes!! I mean, it does not get better.
Bottom line here? If you have not yet made this naan, make it soon. Then make this grilled cheese with the leftovers. It’s truly heaven on Earth. Dramatic? Yes, very, but so true.

This was great and a nice twist on grilled cheese/quesadillas! Was very happy to find this recipe as I had nothing planned for dinner but had all of these ingredients. Thanks for the recipe!

Thank you for trying this! I am so glad you loved this Melissa! xTieghan
I was lazy and used store bought naan but this was still incredible. The honey drizzle at the end is a must. I was skeptical but the slight touch of sweetness that it adds brings this dish up to a whole other level. The heat from the red pepper was the perfect finishing touch. Easy to make and sooo satisfying!!!
So glad you enjoyed this Marissa! xTieghan
I just made this and the creamy Moroccan tomato soup- sooooo good. I left the harissa out of the soup because I don’t like heat but it was all fab! I can’t wait to have leftovers tomorrow. Thanks you for these simple and fast recipes.
Thank you so much Kristen! I am so glad you loved this! xTieghan
We just used cheddar and chose fresh thyme for the herb. sprinkled the chili flakes on the cheese rather than the outside.
The honey MADE it!

This looks delicious and so different! Can’t wait to make it. May I ask what knife that is that is in the pictures? I’ve been wanting to purchase a great knife like that but not sure where to find one. Thanks! Lisa
Hey Lisa! That is actually a vintage knife so I do not have a source. That said, I love Zwilling knives. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan
Naan and cheesy cheese … it just doesn’t get any better than that!! And what a GREAT idea to drizzle some honey on the sandwich at the end. I have never thought of a grilled cheese naan … but now it is gonna be a must for me. You always have the most interesting take on recipes. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! xTieghan
I made your naan bread the other day and really, the recipe is one of the best doughs I have ever used. Loved it as the herby, buttery, garlicky naan, but used the leftover dough as pizza dough the next day. Wow. The best pizza ever!
Thank you!
