Keeping things colorful and easy today with this One Skillet Greek Chicken and Orzo with Tomatoes, Feta, and Tzatziki. Greek inspired oregano chicken cooked together with bell peppers and orzo pasta to create a deliciously, healthy one skillet style summer dinner. The chicken is finished with garlic tomatoes, feta cheese, and creamy tzatziki sauce. It’s simple but mouthwatering and made in no time.

Did I mention to you guys that if we didn’t go to Mexico for our family vacation that Greece was next on our list?

Well, wait, it was next on my list, and personally my top choice. But seeing as Greece isn’t quite as easy to get to, the family went with Mexico (and we had a blast, so not complaining). I’ve always wanted to see Greece, and someday I definitely will. But for now I’ve been visiting vicariously through the photos I pin on Pinterest. They’ve inspired me to create dishes using ingredients commonly used in Greece.

Mexico won-out as our family trip this year. But I thought I’d at least share a simple recipe using Greek ingredients that I love.

This isn’t by any means a traditional Greek dinner. But it is made with plenty of delicious Greek ingredients…Greek oregano, salty feta, and a creamy tzatziki sauce.

This skillet chicken is simple…

And it all starts with the chicken. I wanted to use up some of the Greek oregano we have growing in the garden. So a simple garlic and paprika basil chicken with lots of oregano was perfect.

Simply sear the chicken in a big skillet, then toss it with a little balsamic vinegar.

Next comes the orzo and tomatoes

We know that I’m all about a one skillet meal. So I decided to just add some orzo and bell peppers right into the skillet. The orzo cooks in the juices and oils from the chicken. It adds flavor and creates a creamy, super delicious orzo.

While the orzo cooks, toss together the tomatoes with garlic and fresh basil. I kept the tomatoes simple to allow their summer flavors to really shine.

I love using heirloom tomatoes and sweet cherry tomatoes, but use what you’e got on hand. This time of year they should be delicious no matter what type you choose!

Finish it up – see simple!

When the orzo finishes cooking, I toss in the chicken and olives.

Now, here is what I love to do, spoon the tomatoes and oil over the chicken. The heat from the dish allows for the flavors of the tomatoes to really pop. You’ll immediately smell the fresh basil and garlic.

It’s so delicious.

Top everything with plenty of feta cheese and tzatziki. The cheese and tzatziki are extra delicious finishing touches. I wouldn’t skip out on them, trust me.

This is truly one of those dinners you will be so excited for. It’s full of color, flavor, texture, with deliciously seasoned chicken, tomatoes and plenty of feta cheese.

I hope you’ll enjoy making this all summer long…and plus, there’s no oven involved!

Ingredients

Tomatoes

  • 2 cups mixed heirloom tomatoes, chopped or halved
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, grated

Instructions

  • 1. In a large skillet, toss together the olive oil, chicken, oregano, paprika, and a pinch each of salt and pepper. Cook over medium-high heat until the chicken is browned all over and cooked through, about 5 minutes. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and garlic, cook another minute. Remove the chicken from the skillet.
    2. To the skillet, add the bell peppers. Cook until soft, 2-3 minutes. Add the orzo and 2 1/2 cups water. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often until almost all the water is absorbed, about 10 minutes. Stir the chicken and olives into the orzo. Allow the chicken to warm through, about 3 minutes.
    3. Meanwhile, toss all the ingredients for the tomatoes together in a bowl. Season with salt and red pepper flakes.
    4. To serve, spoon the tomatoes over the chicken and gently toss. Serve each topped with feta cheese and tzatziki.

    Everyone liked it a lot!

I thought the current amount of garlic was a little too strong, so I’ll do a little less next time. I’ll also likely use barley or quinoa next time instead of orzo!

    1. Hey Emily,
Thanks a lot for trying out this recipe. I love to hear that it was enjoyed and hope you have the best week! xTieghan

    1. Hey Lindz,
Thanks so much for making this recipe, I am delighted to hear that it was enjoyed! Have the best weekend:) xTieghan

      1. Hi! Making this tomorrow and I imagine that cooking the tomatoes some would make them more of a part of the dish. Do you think I could throw them in the saucepan beforehand to cook then some? Thanks!

        1. Hey Gretchen,
Sure, that would be totally fine to do here! I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

Another fantastic recipe! I doubled it since I was cooking for 6 adults and 3 kids. We had leftovers which was great. I did store bought tzatziki and needed a little bit more liquid to cook the orzo. I used chicken broth. I will definitely make this again. The kids liked it, too!

  3. 5 stars
This was divine! I marinated the chicken for half the day in the oregano, paprika, salt and pepper (added a little olive oil) and used chicken broth to boil the orzo, instead of water. So good.

    1. Hey there,
Happy Wednesday! Thanks a lot for making this recipe, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! Have the best day:) xTieghan

Made this last weekend for the family – a five star hit for sure! Topped with feta and tzatziki – so yummy! We all loved it – husband even had seconds (the closest thing I ever get to a compliment, and I’m a chef!) Will definitely make it again.

Thanks for this recipe Tieghan! I’ve made it a few times because everyone loves it so much! I like to add a bit more smoked paprika, and some of us don’t like feta so we use goat cheese instead. So good!

    1. Hey Addi,
Awesome! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed and appreciate you giving it a go! Have a wonderful week:) xTieghan

Loved this. Made it for lunch, and used a half-portion of rotini instead of orzo — so I got the pasta, and my keto-eating husband could enjoy his portion without.

    1. Hey Reem,
Wonderful! Thanks a bunch for giving this recipe a try, I am thrilled that it was enjoyed! Have a great weekend:) xTieghan

  7. Loved this — heirlooms are poppin’ this time of year and really make the dish. Needed a lot more liquid for two cups of pasta to soften (would pull that back to a cup next time) and not salt so much throughout cooking because the olives more than make up for that (and I used only 1/2 c.).

    1. Hey Eddie,
Wonderful! Thanks a bunch for giving this recipe a try, I am thrilled that it was enjoyed! Have a great weekend:) xTieghan

  8. It was so good!! We had it for dinner that night. I had my son over for dinner. Hehad two serving, then again the next day. He came over from work had it for lunch then took the rest and had for dinner. LOL. Will be making g it again! Thanks

  9. Tasted like a homemade bowl from Cava (and I love Cava!!) Simple and delicious. Definitely adding this to the rotation and telling all my friends and family about it!

    1. Hey Briana,

I made this & adapted it a bit to my own tastes. Left out the olives bc I’m not a fan ;-). Added lemon zest to the tomato salad/topping & much less olive oil. Also added lemon juice to the chicken & orzo at the end to brighten the flavors.

I used only half the called-for amount of orzo since there’s only two of us eating!

    Overall, really delicious.

    1. Hey there,
Happy Wednesday! Thanks a bunch for making this recipe, I am so glad to hear it was a winner:) xTieghan

  11. I just got back from the grocery store. Can’t wait to make it tonight. Do you mix the feta and tzatziki sauce in it, or just spoon it over dish. I couldn’t find heirloom tomatoes. What would you use instead.

    1. Hey Linda,
I like to just spoon it over the dish, you can use any other tomato like cherry tomatoes:) I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  12. 5 stars
Family loved it. Great flavors. My only comment, you need to cook the orzo longer than 10 minutes, I cooked it about 20 to 25 and added more water and it was fabulous.

    1. Hey Sandra,
Wonderful! I am thrilled to hear this recipe was enjoyed and truly appreciate you giving it a try. Have the best week! xTieghan

Made this tonight! It was very good, but I found I had to make some alterations: 1) Added more liquid and cooked it longer (orzo was still partially hard and small when I followed recipe, also my first time cooking it, surprisingly). 2) Added more spices and garlic than the recipe called for; it wasn’t flavourful enough for me without the extra amounts. Topping it with cherry tomatoes tossed in oil, basil and garlic was amazing. Paired with the tsatziki and feta, yummmm.

    1. Hey Marina,

Made this and LOVED it! Was too busy shoveling it into my face to take a pic! I did add roasted red peppers, sundries tomatoes and fresh chopped romaine hearts to ours to make it more of a salad. Definitely a new favorite – thanks for sharing all of your amazing talent with us!

Delicious!!! The only difference I made was I used chicken thighs and marinated them in the spice mixture all day long before sautéing! This was a great meal and super fast – It will be on the rotation for sure!

I’d rate this a 10 star review if I could! This was everything a summer pasta dish should be! Not to mention all the fresh goodness from my garden that I was able to incorporate, too…yummm! Keep these Greek recipes comin’!

This was a tasty weeknight meal! The chicken is flavorful and the tomato salad adds a freshness that topped off the final dish! I added a little Calabrian chili paste to give it a little spicy zip. Super simple and oh so good.

This dish is ALL THE THINGS! So easy to put together, super flavourful and lots of texture with the creamy orzo and feta to the crunchy peppers and juicy tomatoes. Will be making this again, probably this week! My family loved it…no leftovers!

    1. Hey Samantha,
Wonderful! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed and I appreciate you giving it a try! xTieghan

  19. Delish! Saw it on Insta today and had to make it. I squeezed a lemon on the orzo for some kick. I would skip the garlic on the tomato salad as I used red Russian garlic and too much bite for this dish. Will make again!

    1. Hey Kim,

  20. O…M…G! This is one of my all time favs of your recipes. Holy yum! I am SOOOO GLAD there are leftovers! Heaven! Made your avocado tzatziki. Yes yes yes! The flavors are perfection! Thank you!

this was so good i almost cried eating it. my family and i devoured it in like 10 minutes max. it is so simple and delicious. the balsamic adds such a great flavor to the chicken, as well as the side of heirloom tomatoes, which make a huge difference compared to fresh tomatoes. sprinkling feta cheese on top also makes it melty and SO GOOD! every single greek recipe from this website is my favorite and never misses!!😋🥰

  29. I love all of your recipes and this one looks amazing! Would love to make it, but my boyfriend hates tomatoes, any ideas for a substitute? Probably a silly question as it’s a major part of the recipe. Thanks for all your delicious and creative meals!

    1. Hey Rebecca,
You could do bell peppers in place of the tomatoes. I hope this recipe turns out amazing for you. Please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

Strangely, I couldn’t find orzo at the store. I used Israeli couscous that I had at home and was a great substitute.

Served this for dinner tonight and everyone loved it! Loved that it was a one pan meal! Anything with orzo is great! We had some olive haters in the crowd so we omitted those, but everything else was excellent and it was a great way to use some of the tomato bounty from the garden.

Full of fantastic flavour…and a “make again”.
I ended up adding more water to make the orzo soften up…as if making risotto.

Great way to spice up boring chicken tenders. I actually served the tomatoes with chopped lettuce and sliced cucumbers as a crunchy side salad to give it some contrast in texture.
I was worried about the orzo at first as it was still slightly hard in the center after the water evaporated off, but I turned off the heat and covered the dish for another 5 or so minutes and it steamed up perfectly. Watch your heat people and cover if it seems to be cooking off to quickly.
Husband and I loved it, picky teen approved!

Made it for dinner, and it was super easy! (I may have walked away with a few burns lol BUT totally worth it!) It was delicious, and I was able to use fresh tomatoes and basil from my yard too!

  37. Hey there! I love your recipes but have never commented. I also strangely had the same experience of needing 4 to 4.5 cups of water. Maybe our pans are wider and it cooked off too quickly? I’m about to finish it right now and I’m sure it will be delightful!

The bones of this recipe are good, but it has two major issues.

The first is that it’s described as “Greek” but the flavor profile is far too wide-ranging and not particularly accurate to be described as such. The tomato salad does not need basil, and the smoked paprika is not a great addition. Plus, an entire half-cup of fresh oregano would make this incredibly bitter and overwhelming.

The second is that the proportion of water to orzo is completely off, and that there is no temperature indication at which to cook the orzo. I essentially treated this like a risotto and added more water whenever the pan became dry — probably close to four cups, if not more — at medium/medium-low heat.

    1. Hey Jessica,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try, sorry it wasn’t enjoyed, please let me know if I can help in anyway! xTieghan

    2. She says in the description (if you read the entire blog post and didn’t just skip to the recipe) that this not a traditional Greek dish.

  41. This has been great to have for lunch for the week! I’ve been squirting lemon juice on top for extra flavor and summer freshness.

The toppings truly sealed in so much pizzazz, but I used the tomato mixture on our side green salad, adding in chunks of red onion as well. I cooked the orzo like I would rice (with a lid) and 10 min was perfect. Tieghan- ♡ all your recipe creations!!!

Loved it! But my orzo did take more water and longer than 10 mins. I thought maybe I had temp too high but see others had same issue. Not a biggie. Worth the wait! Now my hubby is a Teigan fan! He started looking thru all her recipes for other meals. Lol.

Hello, what an amazing recipe. Made it yesterday and it was absolutely gourmet restaurant quality. My house smelled like an authentic Greek restaurant. I followed the recipe except for point 3 which indicates to sprinkle with red pepper flakes. The red pepper was a bit confusing as it wasn’t in the ingredient list, so like most things that confuse me, I just ignored it. Still tasted great! Also used Chicken Broth in lieu of water to cook the orzo. It was so creamy. Thank you for this terrific recipe!

Yummy, but hard to make it work! I made this tonight and the orzo was not anywhere close to being ready or edible (still really hard/uncooked) in 10 mins..not even 20! Had to add way more water as well…not sure how everyone else was able to make this successfully because this was no where close to working for me, unfortunately 🙁 I LOVE Tieghans recipes and this was delicious in the end but I wanted to write this in case anyone else was struggling to make it work! Just add more water and have lots and lots of patience.

    1. Hey Allison,
Thanks so much for making this recipe, so sorry you had issues with the cook times. xTieghan

    2. Yes I wonder if it’s supposed to be one cup of orzo for that amount of liquid. That would make more sense.

        1. Same issue as others, I had to continually to add water/broth for a long time. Otherwise this was great, I think I’d just cook the orzo separately and save myself the hassle.

really, really good, I reduced the amount of fresh oregano by about 1/8 cup, thinking it was a LOT of oregano but could have used it all so don’t be afraid. The tzatziki and tomato relish were so good with this dish. I didn’t use much feta (although I love it) because I thought those two toppings were enough and because the olives added enough salt but if you use it I would recommend flaking into pretty small pieces. Used whole olives, next time I will halve them. Delicious and pretty, my guests raved too and asked for the recipe. Thanks Tieghan.

Went to make this for dinner tonight but discovered I was out of orzo. Decided to use Arborio rice instead. Took longer to cook, and of course needed more liquid- I started off with a splash of wine and then used water. Result? Delicious dinner! Will definitely make again.

Love reading a recipe and realizing I have all the ingredients. This was fun to put together- cutting herbs out of the garden, chopping up olives, grating cucumbers.

    And it is delicious!

I made it tonight with brown rice and it tasted great! Ours was that 90 sec bagged rice (it’s what we had on hand). But it cut off a lot of the cook time!

  61. Hi Tieghan, could you please provide the recipe for the tzatziki? This looks really good, and I want to try it. Best to you!

    1. I made it last night! It should be a hyperlink, so if you click on the “tzatziki, for serving” in the ingredient list it will take you straight to the recipe for tzatziki! Hope that helps!

  62. This looks very good.

I’d have to use dried oregano in place of fresh, how much do you think? Thank you. Xx

    1. Hey Kelly-Jane,
I would use a couple tablespoons of dried oregano. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

    1. Hey Jocelyn,

I can’t even begin to explain how incredible this dish was. I made one change and would suggest another. I used chicken stock instead of water and would suggest dicing not slicing the peppers. Otherwise this is an absolute keeper. I’m full to the brim but want more, what else can I say?

    1. Hey Jocelyn,
