One Skillet Lemon Butter Dijon Chicken and Orzo with Feta Sauce, the perfect winter dinner…quick, easy, colorful and delicious! Pan-seared dijon chicken with lemon butter, cooked together with orzo pasta for an all-in-one dinner. Go that extra step and serve drizzled with a delicious creamy feta sauce. A dinner that everyone at the table will love.
I think the day I got my first Staub skillet was the day I created the “one skillet” dinner. Not saying I invented the one skillet dinner by any means. Just that that I invented it for myself that day. It was many, many years ago. But ever since then I’ve made countless one skillet dinners in my Staub pan. It’s a method of cooking I fall back on weekly.
Throwing everything in the same skillet just makes sense. For one, you’re saving dishes by avoiding using multiple pans. But even more importantly, you’re creating a dish that’s full of flavor. When you cook everything together, the flavors are able to blend, making every element of the recipe delicious.
Of course, with this recipe I created one extra step with that feta sauce. But trust me, it’s worth it!
Season the chicken with Dijon, garlic, shallots, a bit of rosemary and some paprika. I like to sear the chicken to give it a nice crisped base. Then I toss it in a little butter, add some lemon slices, and let everything cook up along side the chicken. The butter browns and everything smells delicious.
Next, pull the chicken and lemon out out of the skillet, then add the orzo and broth. Stir in the kale…or you could also use spinach. Then slide the chicken into the orzo and throw the whole skillet into the oven to finish cooking.
I couldn’t share this recipe without including a sauce. You all know how it goes around here, never enough sauce. Enter my feta sauce. It’s whipped feta cheese with a bit of yogurt, lemon, and if you have some fresh herbs on hand, toss those in too.
The salty feta creates an addicting sauce. Every spoonful is delicious, but it’s especially great over this dijon chicken.
It’s a real crowd pleaser, and comes out of the oven looking pretty and smells even more delicious. I threw some fresh dill on top for color and served the chicken and orzo right out of the skillet.
Perfect for easy weeknight dinners or even entertaining. It really brightens the table on a cold winter day!

This was so good!! I used cauliflower rice to make it lower carb. I just guessed and used 2 regular/smallish sized bags of cauliflower rice. It left it kind of soupy, but I add to my bowl a feta, labne and a spoon of trader Joe’s pepper/garlic/eggplant spread and it makes a really flavorful gravy to drink out of the bowl when I’m done. Adding to my rotation! Thanks so much for this wonderful recipe ☺️
Hey Julie,
Happy Sunday!! Thanks so much for making this recipe, I am so glad to hear that it was enjoyed! xx
Made this today in two separate cast iron skillets. One with cauliflower rice and one with arborio rice. Both were delicious and devoured by everyone. The sauce is excellent. I used half goat cheese and half feta because that is what I had and it was perfect. Well Done Tieghan!
Hi Michelle,
Fantastic!! Thanks so much for making this recipe, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! ?Tieghan
Made this for a meal train and it was so delicious! The receiving family said it was the best meal they got during their 5 week meal train! Even if you wanted to simplify and not do the sauce it would taste delicious (but do the sauce! It adds a great kick!). Definitely adding to my favorites.
Tip: I ended up using my le crueset pot instead of the cast iron skillet because I couldn’t fit it all into the skillet. Still came out great.
Hey Karia,
Thank you so much for trying this recipe, I am thrilled that it was enjoyed!! xTieghan
I made this fully stove top bc I can’t find my cast iron pan but, it was still super good. I also didn’t add the butter since I try not to cook with it. Super flavorful – makes a TON of food so will cut the recipe in half next time but, still recommend!
Hey Diana,
Thank you so much for trying this recipe, I am thrilled that it was enjoyed!! xTieghan
‘m not sure what exactly went wrong, but the chicken was very dry, and the lemon overpowering.
After the chicken was browned in the pan for 3-5 minutes on each side, wouldn‘t it make more sense to add it again towards the end of the orzo cooking time instead of cooking it in the oven for 15 minutes?
And maybe my lemons were too big and juicy, but what would the amount of juice be in tablespoons?
Could I cook this covered on the stovetop instead of the oven?
Many thanks!
Hi Doris,
So sorry to hear the recipe was not enjoyed. Maybe your chicken was smaller than what I used? I would say about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Sure, you could fully cook on the stove top. Please let me know if I can help in any other way! xTieghan
Could you use pearl cous cous instead of orzo? If so, would the amount of liquid stay the same?
Excellent. I used barley that I partially cooked and it was delicious. The sauce adds wonderful flavor.
Hi Jennifer,
Wonderful!! I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks so much for making it! Have the best weekend:) xTieghan
Hi Rebecca,
Sorry, I have never tried this with pearled couscous so I really don’t know what the results would be. I think Arborio rice would be your best bet. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
Aaaaahhhhh I tried this and it was AMAZING! For context, I NEVER cook and have major fear of messing up in the kitchen. This recipe was super easy to follow (loved the video as well!) and the dish turned out incredible!! Thank you thank you…will be trying the tomato soup next!!
Hey Yasmin,
Happy Sunday!! I am thrilled that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks for trying it out!! ?xx
Oh my LORD, this one was delicious. I totally forgot dijon at the store, so ended up using pesto and replacing the paprika with basil and oregano to keep that nice herby flavor, and it was fantastic. My husband cleared his plate in minutes and asked me to keep this recipe handy. And so easy! Only took about 30 minutes!
Hey Tess,
Wonderful!! I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks so much for making it! Have the best weekend:) xTieghan
Hi Tiegan! This recipe sounds amazing and I can’t wait to try it. Does it matter if I use crumbled feta or block feta?
Hey Amy,
I would recommend using block feta for best results:) I hope you love the recipe, let me know how it turns out!! xx
I can’t wait to try this recipe!! I’m not a huge fan of feta – is there another cheese you would recommend? Goat cheese? Thanks!
Hey Erika,
Goat cheese would be fantastic!! Let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it!! xx
Amazing!!! My family loves your other One-Skillet Chicken, Lemon & Orzo recipe but this is a new favorite! They really liked the Dijon flavor and could not get enough of the feta sauce. I have teenage boys so I doubled everything. Had just enough leftover for them to fight over who takes it for lunch. Thank you!!!
Hi Anderson,
Fantastic!! I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks a bunch for trying it out! xTieghan
Is there a healthy substitute for orzo? I was thinking cauliflower rice, but wasn’t sure if it would work! Let me know 🙂
Hey Kara,
To be quite honest, I have never worked with cauliflower rice so I am not sure the results it would give. I would probably cook it on the side, reduce the liquid in the dish and then serve. I hope this helps! xTieghan
Delicious. I made it with lemon juice and no lemon slices, still yummy!
Hi Emily,
Thanks so much for making this recipe, I am so glad it was enjoyed!! Have the best week:) xTieghan
Yum! Quick and easy. Threw the chicken on the grill instead.
Hey Alicia,
Happy Sunday!! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks for giving it a try and sharing your feedback! xx
This dish was a hit! I made it for my weekly family Top Chef night when it was my turn to cook. Almost forgot the sauce (ran to the kitchen to get it after I took the picture and people started seating) and it completely made the dish. Saving this dish to make again but next time
Hey Shelly,
Wonderful!! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! Have the best weekend!☀️ xx
I don’t have an oven proof pan big enough for all of this, can I move it into a baking dish to bake?
Hi Courtney,
Yes, that will work well for you! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan
