Frozen banana slices with your favorite assortment of toppings, covered in chocolate, and finished with a dusting of flaky sea salt. Let your taste buds run wild with fun toppings. Asher has been complaining that I never make chocolate desserts anymore. And while that’s obviously not true, I have definitely slowed with the overly sweet chocolate desserts. I’ve been putting a little more focus on lighter summer dessert recipes – I just make what we’re craving.

And ever since my mom has mostly stopped eating added sugar, I’ve been more conscious of creating low-sugar sweet recipes. That means that fruit-based options and a good amount of vegan chocolate desserts have been higher on my to-make list.

Asher doesn’t love it, but I’m all about it, as is my mom.

Point is, there’s been a lack of sweet chocolate desserts around. While I was hiking, I was randomly thinking about dessert recipes and fun frozen recipes I could share with you all. I have so many ideas for ice and fruit-based sweets this summer – and I’m surely embracing both. But then this idea floated into my head.

Chocolate-covered frozen bananas with an assortment of yummy toppings, plus a little sprinkle of sea salt on top.

I knew it wasn’t a concept that hadn’t been done before. But it was one I personally just wanted to make and enjoy. So here we are. This is much more of an idea than a hardcore recipe. Regardless, these fun bites are the simplest to make and so freaking delicious.

Details

You really just need 3 ingredients – bananas, chocolate, and coconut oil. Whatever toppings you choose is up to you!

I start by slicing bananas into slices, then arrange them on a parchment-lined baking. I add toppings to each slice, then freeze for a bit. This step probably is not necessary, but I find working with semi-frozen slices to be easier and much less messy.

While the slices freeze I melt lots of chocolate with coconut oil and line a cupcake mold with paper liners. You can use a mini mold or a regular mold, but I prefer the mini if you have that size!

When ready, I add a small amount of chocolate to each paper cupcake liner and then the frozen banana slice. Then pour the chocolate overtop to mostly cover the slice. The amount of chocolate will really vary depending on how little or big you’ve made each slice of banana.

My best tip is to try not to overload the banana slices with toppings. I know it’s tempting, but if you pile on too many toppings, things just get messy.

Lastly, freeze until totally frozen. See, easy, and honestly fun to make too.

The toppings

These are the fun part. There are so many combinations you can and should do!

– assorted nut butters
– jam + cherry or raspberry on top
– peanuts + honey
– cinnamon sugar
– honey + toasted coconut
– peanut butter + pretzels
– pistachios + honey
– instant coffee/espresso powder + toasted hazelnuts
– honey + sea salt
– roasted nuts/seeds
– jam + coconut

I mean, I could go onand on! But even bananas + chocolate + sea salt are delicious. Though in my book, a drizzle of honey makes that combo even better.

Our favorite? Obviously chocolate, banana, peanut butter, honey, and sea salt. Like a peanut butter cup, but better because the frozen banana tastes like vanilla ice cream.

So yummy. Take my word, you’re going to LOVE these!

    2. Add toppings to each slice. Don't overload the slices. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze 20 minutes.

  1. What is a good replacement for the coconut oil? I all allergic to coconut. I’d really like to try this. Thanks!

    1. Hi Dougie,
You can use butter or another neutral oil in place of the coconut oil. Please let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx

I am going to try these! I have made this kind of candies, but not banana. As I have a keen taste, I do not put sea salt on candy- always tastes fishy to me. I put kosher salt on top. A cleaner taste.

Hello Tieghan – I just made these two days ago and I found that my banana turned to mush!! I had to leave my house unexpectedly (for an hour) after I cut and topped my bananas so I put them into the freezer. When I returned, I melted the chocolate then made the cups with the already turning mushy bananas as they warmed. To set the completed cups, I put the tray in the refrigerator and when I sampled one I realized I put too much chocolate in the bottom. The chocolate on the top of the cup cracked all over and the banana smooshed out. LOL. Messy but boy they were good! So did I ruin the banana by keeping it in the freezer too long? That’s my guess so I will prepare these a little differently the next time. Thank you for the recipe.

    1. Hi Lauren,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try, sorry to hear you had some issues. My guess is because you allowed them to warm after they had already been in the freezer, next time try to keep them cold:) xTieghan

These came out yummy. Will turn mushy if stored in the fridge even after freezing them. They store better in the freezer.

These are great bites! We feel as if we’re having ice cream instead of fruit. They keep beautifully in the freezer, too, inside a sealed quart baggie. Problem: my friend and I each made them, and neither of us could get the chocolate to pour well enough to cover the sides of the banana. By comparing notes, we discovered we both had an aversion to immersing the bananas in chocolate to the level of filling the muffin cups (what’s wrong with us??). I suppose using a pastry brush to cover the banana sides would work instead of filling the cup?

      1. Hey Laura,

Saw these on your Instagram and HAD to try them with my aging bananas that were about to go bad! Super easy to follow and I love that there’s so many combos to change it up! I used mini cupcake liners because that’s all my grocery store carried. I also only used 10 oz chocolate because that’s what I had reliably measured in a bag already. I used unrefined coconut oil because I prefer the taste. I did the peanut butter (just peanuts, no sugar added), honey, and sea salt. For my smaller wrappers, I found that 1 tsp chocolate was plenty for the bottom. It made 31 banana bites all together. They are freezing now, but I just was so excited about this that I had to comment! Thank you!

Loved these little frozen treats! We’re not big on desserts but we like to end our meals with a sweet note. I agree with Rosie, thanks for posting your ideas because, yes, I could’ve thought of freezing sliced bananas with toppings and chocolate, only … I didn’t! Plus it doesn’t take long which is perfect for week nights. Merci!
