Because everything covered in chocolate is just better.
And also because it’s Fat Tuesday, so chocolate today is most definitely a must.
But that’s not really the reason I made fortune cookies.
It’s totally because I wanted to write my own fortunes and then pretend like they’d really come true. Yeah, right.
Ok, ok, the real, real reason? Well I don’t know if you know this, but the Chinese New Year is Thursday. Normally I don’t pay a lot of attention to this, but this year I just felt like partaking in the celebration.
And when I say celebrating, I really just mean making some dang good homemade Chinese food. Sadly, I live in a place where the Chinese cuisine is not really all that awesome. If you want good Chinese around here, you just have to make it yourself. Not gonna lie, this doesn’t bother me in the least, I am kind of weird about restaurant eating. I know, huh? See, I just really like knowing what’s actually going into my food and how it is prepared.
I will 100% admit this is due to my “must control everything” mind-set. Some day I hope to outgrow this…but I am not holding my breath.
Anyway, I have always wondered how fortune cookies are made. Growing up, I always used to love cracking mine open, but I never really understood the fortune. What’s up with that? Half those fortunes never made any sense to me. And to be brutally honest, I always ended up eating only half the cookie because I thought they where kind of bland.
Like where is the flavor? Where is the CHOCOLATE?
So I added flavor AND… basically drowned my cookies in chocolate. It was the right thing to do.
Here’s the catch, fortune cookies are easy, but actually forming them into the cookies is kind of a pain. When the cookies come out of the oven you have to work fast to form them, if you don’t you will just end up with a flat cookie. That’s fine, but it’s just not the same.
Surprisingly, folding the cookies is not all that tricky. I used a coffee cup to help me get that classic shape and it worked really well. Once the cookies are formed, they should harden up immediately.
And then it’s time for that chocolate bath. YUM.
Oh, and if you are celebrating Fat Tuesday today, I hope you have a great (hopefully fun food filled) day!!

And that you get to eat plenty of chocolate covered toasted sesame fortune cookies… for good luck. Oh, and beignets – because if there is ever a day to eat beignets, today is the day!
Tieghan I am OBSESSED with this post. SO creative and so delicious – these chocolate covered toasted sesame fortune cookies are just perfect!
Awe!! Thanks Thalia!! 🙂
Wow, I have never thought of covering fortune cookies in chocolate! It’s ingenious! As a shortcut, do you think I could just dipped already made fortune cookies? Instand satisfaction right there XD
Hey Christy! Yup, you sure can!! Thanks!
Whoa, this is total dessert creativity!! Such a neat idea!!
Thanks Katrina!
Just curious – if you put the fortunes into the cookies before you dip them, don’t the bits of paper get all covered in chocolate? Thanks!
Hey Amy,
Yes, they do. For some of them I added the fortunes after dipping, but then they just fell out.
That’s OK, I can definitely think of worse things than extra chocolate!!
These are so cool, and I’m sure they taste a million times better than those packaged ones too!!!
Never would have thought about making fortune cookies are home. What a great idea. And yes, everything must be BATHED in chocolate!
Thanks Liz! And I think all sweet things should probably be bathed in chocolate! 🙂
These look and I’m sure taste fantastic Tieghan! Love the photos too!
Thanks Kathy! Happy Tuesday!!
I agree; fortune cookies are usually bland by themselves. But dipped in chocolate–ohhh yeahhh! 🙂
🙂
Thanks!!
I made fortune cookies in culinary school…fortunes and all. But they did not look anything like these. I will be sure not to write them off before trying yours!
Ha! I am sure yours where so pretty! 🙂
Thanks!
I’m with you on the restaurant thing. Homemade all the way! Unfortunately, my family hates everything homemade. Give them boxed factory food anyday. Not me.
Homemade is always best! Thanks Joshua!!
I love that you drowned these things in chocolate, it’s awesome! Major props for creating such perfect fortune cookies when they are such a pain in the butt. I really want to try these now!
Thanks Tori! Hope you had a great day!! 🙂
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to eat plain ‘ol fortune cookies again after seeing this! The chocolate dip? GENIUS!
Thanks!!
Fortune cookie message I like: If winter comes, then spring must be right behind it.
My Fat Tuesday choices would be beignets or Grater’s (the local bakery-I don’t care what they put in them–they’re good) or Sweet Tooth’s peanut butter meltaways or Unos pizza–gee I’m on a roll but snowed in so I got to get out to my car today and get to at least one of these places or go to the store to get groceries to make something.
Fortune for you: Happy cooking and eating today!
Awe!! I love this comments! Your fortunes are awesome and I hope you got some delicious food today! 🙂
I didn’t think making fortune cookies would be high on my priority list until this post. I’ve also always thought that they were kind of blah and ho-hum. But dipped in chocolate? This just seems like something that should have been done AGES ago. Well done!
Haha!! Thanks so much, Amanda!!
These look so delicious! I really need to try making my own fortune cookies!
I totally agree that the original fortune cookies are rather bland, but making your own means a world of flavor opportunities 😀
I agree Rachel. These are cute and delicious. The touch of chocolate makes them irresistible.
Thanks Rachael!! 🙂
