15 Minute Soy Sauce Butter Fried Rice, the crazy easy dish that’s one of our favorite easy dinners. Stir fried rice in the simplest mix of soy sauce, chili flakes, and butter (the real secret). Mix in bright green broccoli and green onions for color. This fast and easy fried rice can be made and ready in less than 15 minutes making it perfect for busy days.

Look, I know this recipe might look and sound pretty basic, but please don’t knock it till you try it. It’s one of our current favorites. And let me just say that for Asher and my mom, this is an every few days kind of recipe. It’s very much their kind of meal.

Here’s the story…everyone from Creighton on down (yes all of my brothers), Asher, and my mom adore fried rice. It’s a dinner they’ll enjoy multiple times a week. When the boys are here, I have to go heavy on the chicken, but either way, everyone loves it.

They all felt it was odd that I didn’t have a recipe for basic fried rice on the site for you guys. But I didn’t just want to share a recipe you could easily find elsewhere.

Their response was, but yours is so good, people would really enjoy it…isn’t that the idea? The funny thing is that it’s the most basic, simple, straightforward fried rice. Literally nothing to it, but the outcome is pure comfort food and totally delicious.

It’s all about how and what you fry the rice in. I use a mix of tamari (you can obviously use soy sauce, but I prefer tamari), honey, and butter.

But the butter is the real secret.

Here are the steps

I mix a little tamari, with a tiny amount of honey, and a good pinch of chili flakes. You can use the chili flakes to taste.

Then, cook the eggs until they are just set. You don’t want them to be fully cooked. Underdone and still wet is the key. Then add in the rice and plenty of broccoli. I often mix up the vegetables using peppers, carrots, cabbage – really whatever I have on hand, but broccoli is the family favorite.

Then stir in plenty of butter. You want to cook the rice in the butter until the rice is fully coated. You’re basically frying the rice in butter.

Add the tamari mix and green onions, then finish cooking. You want the sauce to stick to the rice and help the rice get crisp.

Serve it while it’s steaming hot with green onions and chili flakes on top.

Keep it simple, that’s the beauty of this recipe. Let the flavors of the butter, sauce, and chili flakes really come through.

Of course, if you want to make this a little heartier, you can add cooked chicken or shrimp. This rice would be delicious with either one…or do both!

My favorite way to serve this fried rice is with my cheese Rangoons. Together they make the perfect dinner!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • 1. In a small bowl, combine the tamari and honey, and season to taste with chili flakes.
    2. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the eggs and let cook until the edges start to set, 1-2 minutes. Gently scramble the eggs. Add the rice, broccoli, and remaining butter. Toss the rice in with the butter and cook until the butter coats the rice. Pour in the sauce, cook until the rice is crisping, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the green onions and remove from the heat.
    3. Serve warm, topped with green onions and chili flakes.

Notes

To add Chicken: If you want to add chicken to the rice, I recommend cooking cubed chicken breasts or skinless thighs with a couple tablespoons of olive oil, 1-2 cloves garlic, a splash of tamari, and a pinch of black pepper. Then stir the cooked chicken into the rice with the green onions.

This dish was a big hit with my family, and it came together so quickly—love that! I added chicken, but I don’t think I would miss it if I left it out. This was my first time cooking with tamari, and we all really liked it. And it’s so much lower in sodium than soy sauce, so I’m glad to add it to my pantry staples. Thanks, Tieghan, for another great meal!

    1. Hi Pamela,
The recipe calls for already cooked rice, so that is not a part of this recipe:) Whether the rice be leftover or made in the morning, it is not made while making the recipe. Hope that clears things up for you! xx

Tasty! Cooked chicken before hand and added it in. 4-5 cups of rice seemed excessive so I only used two and it turned out well.

Your recipe was yummy, quick, and still had a nice flavor! My whole family enjoyed?. I added more veggies, more broccoli and additional bell pepper. If I add nuts next time, what kind do you recommend?

I made this recipe for the first time last week and have made it four times since. I passed it on to my sister and she also loved it. This will be one of my main recipes this summer. So easy and good. I just used what veggies I had on hand (peas, onion, roasted corn and carrots).

I did increase the broccoli amount and baked it in the oven first (I love roasted broccoli). The recipe really does take 15 minutes or less. The salty/sweet sauce pulls everything together. I did add some protein (cashews) to make it an entree. Mmmmm. Good.

I always use cold rice, but tonight tried 2 packages of microwave jasmine rice… instead of 15 minute fried rice this was 5 minute fried rice. The bomb!

Just made it for my lunches at work. I did grab a serving for lunch today – pretty good. I followed the recipe to a tee – but, next time I’ll add some protein and other veggies.

A little user error as well – I need to fuss around with my rice making skills so that the leftovers are not as mushy.
