These Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas are so much better than anything from the store. Homemade tortillas are extra soft, doughy, and chewy. I like to add salted butter, for extra deliciousness. Fresh flour tortillas are so easy to make at home and pretty difficult to mess up. No yeast + no rising time = simple as can be!
When it comes to flour tortillas, I never thought I would care to take the time to make them at home. But after realizing just how simple they can be, I’ve been making them almost weekly. They’re pretty much a staple for our family’s Mexican dinners.
These are DELICIOUS, and like nothing you’ll find in the grocery store.
Homemade tortillas are softer, chewier, and you just can’t beat the flavor.
Simply mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Then, add softened butter and hot water. Mix this until a soft, shaggy dough forms, then use your hands to need the dough into a smooth ball.
Let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to settle.
Divide the dough into 12 to 14 dough balls, then roll each out using a rolling pin. If you have a tortilla press, that will make things very easy! I don’t have one, but it’s on my list of items to invest in.
I like to roll all the dough balls out before I start cooking any of the tortillas. This helps the cooking process go much easier and smoother.
It’s best to use a cast-iron skillet if you can, then add a drizzle of olive oil. Most people don’t use oil to cook the tortillas, but I’ve found you get a much better outcome with just a small amount of oil in the pan.
Cook until bubbles appear on top. Then. just like a pancake, flip and cook until lightly golden.
These are delicious warm, right off the skillet. Fresh fajitas or tacos can also be stored for up to 3 days, or kept frozen for even longer!
These are also great with quesadillas, skillet verde chicken, chili, and more!

Why did my tortillas come out took thick when I cooked them? I used a tortilla press could that be why?
Hi Rachel,
So sorry to hear this! Unfortunately, I’ve never used a tortilla press so that could be why! Was there anything you may have adjusted in the recipe? Let me know how I can help! xT
These are excellent! Thank you! I really appreciate the metrics options on your recipes, ever since I started using my food scale to measure, rather than cups… I’ve had better luck.
Hey Emily,
Wonderful!! Thanks so much for trying this recipe, I love to hear that it turned out well for you! Have a great weekend:)
I made these today with butter, and the dough was so dry. I then added a bit of water, let it rest for 2 hours. They turned out so tough and dry. I think I’ll try with avocado oil next time.
Hey Jane,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. Let me know if there is anything that I can help with! xx
How do you keep the dough from shrinking back up?
The dough has to rest… and time can very slightly. I can’t say how long because I usually make the dough and let it sit for an hour or more…. Sometimes a few hours. It’s easy to make the dough in the middle of multiple tasks and go on your way.
Hey Tonya,
You just keep working it:) Let me know how these turn out for you! xx
I made this recipe with coconut oil. We loved it. I can’t see myself buying commercially produced ones ever again.

Very simple and tasty! I read the comments and made sure not to overmix/cook too long and they turned out great! I halved the recipe and it was perfect for 2 people!
Hey Darby,
Happy Monday!!⛄️ Thanks so much for making this recipe and sharing your feedback, I love to hear that it turned out well for you! xT
These were great! Flavor was wonderful! I found a rolling pin worked better than my tortilla press to get them thin enough. Mine came out a little “tougher” than I was expecting. Do you know why this would be? Maybe I mixed the dough too much? Will definitely make again!!!
Hey Margaret,
Happy Wednesday! Thanks so much for making this recipe and your comment, so glad to hear it turned out well for you! I would try less mixing with the dough, that should help! xx

Can masa be substituted for all purpose flour
Hey Brenda,
I’ve never tested this, but let me know if you give it a try! I hope you love this recipe! xx
These are delicious and really easy, but I can’t get them to come out thin and pliable. I’ve used my rolling pin, a tortilla press, and a burger press but they still come out like flat breads. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
Hi there,

My first time making tortillas and they were so easy and so delicious! I will definitely be making these again.
Hey Gillian,
Happy New Year!!🎆 I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks so much for giving it a try and sharing your review! xT
Add more lard… or butter… maybe a bit of water… remember…. ancient people didn’t have measurements. Just try it till it works… but remember to keep the roller floured
My New Years resolution is to try all 25 of these recipes in 2023, starting with these tortillas (my grandmother made them and we would eat them off the hot plate with butter)! I may have already tried two? You never disappoint! Happy New year!!
Love this Lisa!! Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try! Happy New Year! xT
Would I be able to make the Tortillas with cup for cup gluten free flour? If so is the recipe the same?
Hi Helene,
Yes, that should work well for you! Please let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xT
Hi. Did you make these with gf flour? If so please let me know how they turned out.
Thank you!
Diane Bender
I made the tortillas tonight and they were tougher then usual, i made them 3 times this week different recipes I think less baking powder might be okay. I am going to make them every day until they come out perfect. Ty
Thanks for sharing Marie!!
I made a batch today and made dough to make tortillas for later. They were delicious and easy to make. At first I used my tortilla press, but it came out more like flatbread. I’m not complaining though. You can dip them in hummus 😋 I rolled the rest with my rolling pin and they turned out perfect 👍🏻
