Switching up our Easter app options with these Oven Fried Feta Rolls with Chili Honey. Greek phyllo dough rolled up with feta cheese, garlic, and fresh dill, then baked until warm, golden, and crisp. Serve these yummy, oven fried rolls with spicy honey for dipping. Such an easy appetizer that everyone always loves!
Easter is this Sunday, and while I previously shared My favorite Easter Recipes with you all, there’s always room at the table for additional food, especially appetizers. And trust me, you’ll want to make these.
When I had this idea the other day I was so excited to create the recipe and share it with my family. I knew they would love these simple rolls. I don’t often cook with phyllo dough, so they felt fun and different.
When I think of Easter, I always sway towards Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. Feta and phyllo dough are commonly paired together in Greek cooking, so I knew the combination would be delicious.
I wanted to add a little sauce, and honey is always my go-to when serving feta as an appetizer. The sweetness really balances out the saltiness of the cheese.
Phyllo dough can be intimidating to work with. But as long as you keep the dough covered with a damp towel while working, it’s not difficult!
Because phyllo is so thin, it tears easily, so just go slowly while assembling. And as I said, keep the dough covered. When phyllo dries out, it cracks and becomes hard to work with.
Also, you should know that your first roll will not be perfect. But have extra sheets of phyllo on hand and by the end, you’ll have the rolling perfected.
Start by combining the feta, dill, and garlic. Then add some olive oil to a bowl for brushing. Use the oil when you feel like the dough is getting dry, it will keep it wet.
Lay the phyllo out, add the feta, and then tuck and roll like a burrito. It’s not fancy, I promise! Brush each roll with olive oil before baking, then bake until golden.
While baking, make the honey sauce. I did a spicy chili butter honey sauce with just a little oil, butter, chili flakes, and cumin seed. You can cook the spices in the butter and oil to really bring out their flavor before adding the honey.
The spiciness and sweetness really balance with the salty, herby flavors in the rolls.
I love to serve these warm, but they’re delish at room temperature too! And if you want to prepare the rolls ahead of time and bake off before guests arrive, that works too! Just keep the pan covered until you’re ready to bake.
These will be so perfect for Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, and anytime you need a quick, simple, and different appetizer! They’re a hit every time!

Any tips if they don’t hold the cheese in completely?? Mine came out of the oven and half the cheese had exploded out. Still tasty and I did enjoy the crispy cheese explosion, but wondering what I did wrong? The flavors are great though!
Hey Jessica,
Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try, so sorry about the cheese explosion! I would try using less cheese next time:) I hope this helps! xT
I see a lot of confusion about rolling the phyllo. The phyllo I bought doesn’t come in a flag shape like puff pastry. So after folding it in half, I used a pizza cutter to cut the rectangle into two triangular pieces. Then it had the flag shaped referred as seen in the photo.
oops…ignore ‘referred’ 😀 Btw, this is delicious and easy to make!
Hi Kim,
Thanks for sharing, you are correct in that you should not be able to roll the phyllo dough:) xx
I tested these out at home last week and they were incredible !! I am now bringing to my family Christmas. I saw several comments about prepping in advance and then just baking at the party and that’s my plan. But my question is about the olive oil you brush on each roll. Would you do this ahead of time too or leave them dry with a damp cloth over and then brush on the olive oil just before baking?
Hey Tina,
Happy Wednesday! I am so glad to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! I would do the olive oil ahead of time as well:) xxT
Thanks Tieghan, prepping them now 🙂
Do you think these could be prepped and frozen in advance of baking?
Hey there,
Sure, I think that should work well for you! I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xT
Is the cumin seed ground or whole in this recipe?
Hi Beth,
For this recipe you are going to want to use ground cumin seed. Please let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love this! xTieghan
The recipe says cumin seed. Please clarify
Hi Terry,
You will use 1/2 teaspoon of cumin seed in this recipe. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xx
Made my filling (I did add sun-dried tomatoes to it), and found I inadvertently defrosted a Puff Pastry sheet instead of Phyllo Dough. So I cut the pastry into 2″ squares and filled each square with the mix. Rolled them, refrigerated them covered with some wax paper, and then baked when ready to serve. They came out perfectly and delicious. I will make them again – jut not sure which dough to use 🙂
Hey Bonnie,
Happy Friday! I am so excited to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a bunch for trying it out! ?xx
These are delicious! And my new go to appetizer! I take them everywhere and they are always a huge hit. Not for me, but ideas for an additional dipping sauce for those who don’t like the heat? Honey mustard?
Hey Mary Lou,
Fantastic!! I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks for trying it out! Sure, honey mustard would be great or even just plain honey or fig preserves:) I hope you had a great holiday weekend!?
Yum! Such a fun snack- I halved the amount of filling and still ended up with 12 rolls. I think you’ll need to really fill up the rolls, or you’ll have extra filling. You can make the flavors your own too- changing up the herbs would definitely work. And finally, my tip for dealing with phyllo dough is just to do what it wants. Let it tear, double up, don’t force it. It’ll be delicious no matter what. Oh yea! And do not skip the honey!!! It makes the whole thing
Hey Shannon,
Fantastic!! Thanks a lot for trying this recipe and sharing your review, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! ?Tieghan
Hi, I would love to try these, but please explain how I need to cut/fold the phyllo? Thanks!
Hi Carin,
The phyllo dough does not need to be cut, you can follow the instructions as written for folding the phyllo dough, similar to folding a flag. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx
I’m not following the folding process either. It seems that the pieces used are triangular but I don’t understand how you are getting that shape without cutting the phyllo.
Please ignore the photo of the triangles, just use as a rectangle and fold over like a flag is being folded:)
How many individual rolls is this supposed to make? It says 12 servings but not how many is a serving.
I need to work on my phyllo skills but the taste was excellent!
Hi Kelly,
In step 3, the recipe states it will make 12-16 rolls:) Thanks for giving the recipe a try, glad to hear they were enjoyed!! xxTieghan
Loved these, so great for entertaining. I pre-wrapped the night before then popped them in the oven prior to guests arriving. Only issues was the honey dipping sauce, would add less butter. Otherwise a massive hit!!
Hey Dee,
Happy Sunday!! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! xTieghan
Dying to try these out! Do you think they would travel well to a party or are they best served fresh out of the oven?
Hi Sarah,
These are best served from the oven:) I would just assemble and then bake at your destination. Let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx
Thanks for the tip! I made them and they were a HUGE hit – I shared the link to this recipe with literally every person there because everyone asked 🙂 and while they were BOMB fresh out of the oven, they were still delicious even a few hours later! Will definitely make again.
Hi Sarah,
Awesome!! Thanks a bunch for trying this recipe, I love to hear that it was a hit! Have the best weekend!? xxTieghan
Would dried dill work as well as the fresh dill? Thank you-they look delicious
Hey Vicki,
Yes, dried dill would be just fine for you to use! Please let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx
Hello, is it possible to leave out the dill from the recipe or to change it to something else?
Thanks,
Tünde
Hey there,
Sure, you can skip the dill or use another herb that you enjoy! I hope this recipe turns out amazing for you, let me know if you give it a try! xx
Can egg roll wrappers be used instead?
Hey Tee,
I haven’t tested the egg roll wrappers with this recipe, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, they might just be heavier than using the phyllo dough. Let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx
I made these for my in-laws and turned out great. For an upcoming party, could I assemble a day prior and freeze until ready to bake?
Hey Ashlin,
Awesome!! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! Totally, that will work well for you! ?xx
I made these for a girls night and they were a hit ! Thank you. Love your recipes
