It doesn’t look like it, but when you read this recipe, to me, it screams retro. Retro, like a recipe your grandma would have made way back in the day. This is totally something my Nonnie would have made on repeat.

It’s EASY, which we of course love. My Nonnie was a real pro at creating delicious dinners that took very little effort on her part. She knew her time was better spent shopping with me!

Her secret was using ingredients that did double the work. She would incorporate a lot of store-bought seasoning packets and sauces to add flavor. She’d also take shortcuts whenever she could. But regardless, her dinners were always delicious, and I know she’d fully approve of this recipe.

So what is the “retro” secret ingredient here? A little bit of ketchup. It gives this sticky sauce added body, flavor, and sweetness.

I know it’s not a new concept by any means, but I don’t often use ketchup for cooking. I usually reserve it for dipping my french fries. But I’m now sold on using ketchup in sauces. Sounds odd, but wow, it’s so delicious.

The details

This recipe is so simple and straightforward. Grab some broccoli and chicken, I love to use a mix of chicken breasts and thighs. My family prefers chicken breasts, but I think thighs always add flavor. They give just the right amount of fat to keep chicken from drying out. I find a mix is always nice!

Arrange the chicken and broccoli inside a baking dish. I use a smaller sheet pan with sides. Ideally, you want to use something a little smaller than a 9×13 inch baker. This will allow the sauce to better thicken around the chicken. A sheet pan with sides is perfect!

Now the sauce. Mix equal amounts of honey, ketchup, and tamari (or soy sauce) together. Then add tart pomegranate juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix and pour the sauce over the chicken.

Bake until the sauce thickens slightly around the pieces of chicken and broccoli.

At the end of cooking, I like to switch the oven to the broil setting and get the chicken caramelized on top. Just watch closely, the broiler can really work FAST.

I was shocked at how well the timing of everything ended up working out. Nothing fancy here, just simple cooking, but very delicious.

Serve the sauce, chicken, and broccoli over steamed rice with plenty of green onions, and if you’re into it, pomegranates too. I love using them because they add color and juiciness.

I was reading comments as mine was in the oven and was a little nervous BUT I am thrilled to say it turned out perfect! My husband and I loved it❣️. I have 3 of your cookbooks and absolutely love them and so so many delicious recipes. Thank you for being you and so talented!!

    1. Hi Lisa,
Amazing!! Love to hear that this recipe turned out well for you, thanks so much for making it! xx

  2. Made this recipe tonight and I love the flavor. The liquid never thickened which I am super bummed about! I love a good thick glaze. I keep looking over what I may have done wrong or left out, but I’m not finding anything. I couldn’t broil any longer because the broccoli was starting to burn. It was super bubbly, but also super liquidy. Next time I will add a cornstarch slur for sure! Any other suggestions??

    1. Hey Jessica,
Thanks so much for making this recipe! So sorry to hear about the sauce! Yes, I would do a cornstarch slurry next time, I think that should help! xx

I did the corn starch slurry at the end which worked, so thanks for that suggestion. I felt that the liquid made the broccoli soggy. Next time I would cook the broccoli separately so that it is crispy. Honestly it was the first one of your recipes that I didn’t love and I do love so many of them!! The sauce was a hit — tastes fantastic!

    1. Hi Kerry,
Thanks so much for trying this recipe out and sharing your review! So sorry to hear you didn’t love this! xx

flavor was great, added cauliflower because I had it in the fridge. my only ? is what to substitute for ketchup to decrease sugar content. it was a tad on the sweet side. any suggestions?

    1. Hey there,
Happy Wednesday!! I appreciate you making this recipe and sharing your feedback, so glad to hear it was tasty! Have you tried the Primal Kitchen brand of ketchup? So much less sugar, I think you’ll like it! xx

Should have read the comments ahead of time. I thought too much liquid. 1/3 cup of soy sauce is a lot, wondering if that is issue? Will try to thicken with cornstarch.

    1. Hey Jacqueline,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, sorry to hear it was not enjoyed. All of the measurements are exactly what I used for this recipe. Please let me know how I can help! xx

I make HBH recipes all the time and typically love them – this is the only one I wasn’t thrilled with. I’m so curious to know why many people had the same issue with the sauce being so thin. Even after plenty of time under the broiler and trying to cook it down in a sauce pan, I just couldn’t get it beyond the watery consistency. Onto the next one, though – I’m still a huge fan!

    1. Hey Donna,
Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback! So sorry to hear about your sauce! I think a cornstarch slurry has been working for a lot of people, broiling longer works for me:) xT

I’ve made this recipe a few times- it’s easy and yummy! Just a question, if I were to use frozen broccoli florets, would I have to adjust anything?

    1. Hey Hannah,
Happy Monday!! I appreciate you making this recipe and sharing your review, so glad to hear it turned out well for you! I might thaw the broccoli and drain first:) xx

Absolutely disappointed :/ I’ve been trying your recipes to cook for my husband because i’m a picky eater & don’t know how to cook anything other than chicken tenders lol, but he said this recipe was terrible. Too bland & too nasty. Loves everything else & I still enjoy making your recipes !!

I love a lot of your recipes but this was a complete miss for me. It was very liquidy which I guess came from the broccoli which was way over done. Way too sweet. I had to separate the chicken and sauce thicken and re toss. Still not a great flavour. I still love you and love a lot of your recipes! I promote your website often

    1. Hey Shelley,
Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear it didn’t turn out for you! xx

  10. BEWARE: The recipe calls for using parchment paper and then putting it under a broiler. Parchment is not safe under a broiler!! Mine started smoking before I knew the risk of it catching fire. Very irresponsible.

The recipe was easy, and the sauce tastes good, but even after following directions, the sauce turned out too liquidy somehow and I ended up having to make more to coat the chicken after it was done.

    1. Hey Madeline,
Thanks so much for making this recipe, so glad to hear you enjoyed the flavors! Sorry to hear about your sauce, I would try broiler longer next time or using a cornstarch slurry to thicken. I hope this helps! xx

    1. Hi Ann,
So sorry to hear this!! Please let me know if there is anything that I can help with! Thanks for giving the recipe a try! xT

Made this in the oven and it turned out delicious! Except it caused the oven to get smokey and it set off our fire alarm. The fire department came. But otherwise delicious! (One star deduction for fire department visit)

    1. Hey Meghan,
Wonderful!! I love to hear that this recipe turned out well for you, thanks so much for giving it a try! Have a great weekend:)

Very tasty! however, didn’t add pomegranate because I was cutting costs on the shopping list this week:) Next time I make this I’ll probably try baking it in a baking dish that’s smaller so the sauce doesn’t dry up on the pan. And then can more easily pour over the sauce on the rice (or maybe the instapot would solve for this). I also recommend marinating it, but it was very easy to make as written and quick and tasty.

    1. Hey Jacqueline,
Wonderful!!😊 I appreciate you making this recipe and sharing your review, so glad to hear it was delish! xT

Very tasty. I did add the cornstarch slurry, but also added some hot honey because hot honey – addictive. Also threw in a handful of unsalted cashews and sesame seeds on the finished dish.
