This simple Sheet Pan Sticky Ginger Soy Chicken and Broccoli is about to become your new go-to meal. Easy homemade, extra saucy chicken, tossed in a gingery, sweet, spicy, and extra sticky honey soy sauce. Serve with steamed rice and broccoli – cooked right alongside the chicken – for the easiest sheet pan dinner. A delicious, fun, take-out style dinner made at home – and much healthier too – that’s great any night of the week!
It doesn’t look like it, but when you read this recipe, to me, it screams retro. Retro, like a recipe your grandma would have made way back in the day. This is totally something my Nonnie would have made on repeat.
It’s EASY, which we of course love. My Nonnie was a real pro at creating delicious dinners that took very little effort on her part. She knew her time was better spent shopping with me!
Her secret was using ingredients that did double the work. She would incorporate a lot of store-bought seasoning packets and sauces to add flavor. She’d also take shortcuts whenever she could. But regardless, her dinners were always delicious, and I know she’d fully approve of this recipe.
So what is the “retro” secret ingredient here? A little bit of ketchup. It gives this sticky sauce added body, flavor, and sweetness.
I know it’s not a new concept by any means, but I don’t often use ketchup for cooking. I usually reserve it for dipping my french fries. But I’m now sold on using ketchup in sauces. Sounds odd, but wow, it’s so delicious.
This recipe is so simple and straightforward. Grab some broccoli and chicken, I love to use a mix of chicken breasts and thighs. My family prefers chicken breasts, but I think thighs always add flavor. They give just the right amount of fat to keep chicken from drying out. I find a mix is always nice!
Arrange the chicken and broccoli inside a baking dish. I use a smaller sheet pan with sides. Ideally, you want to use something a little smaller than a 9×13 inch baker. This will allow the sauce to better thicken around the chicken. A sheet pan with sides is perfect!
Now the sauce. Mix equal amounts of honey, ketchup, and tamari (or soy sauce) together. Then add tart pomegranate juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix and pour the sauce over the chicken.
Bake until the sauce thickens slightly around the pieces of chicken and broccoli.
At the end of cooking, I like to switch the oven to the broil setting and get the chicken caramelized on top. Just watch closely, the broiler can really work FAST.
I was shocked at how well the timing of everything ended up working out. Nothing fancy here, just simple cooking, but very delicious.
Serve the sauce, chicken, and broccoli over steamed rice with plenty of green onions, and if you’re into it, pomegranates too. I love using them because they add color and juiciness.

Nooo. I’ve loved other recipes but this was so sweet
Hi Marissa,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear it was not enjoyed. Please let me know if there is anything that I can help with! xx
Was a flop. Big watery mess. (Shoulda read the other comments first!) I even tried making the sauce again and reducing it on the stove top. Still didn’t work.
Hey Grace,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear it was not enjoyed. The sauce should have eventually reduced on the stove top, that is just what will happen with a sauce or even water. Let me know if I can help in any other way! xx
Loved this recipe! Such a quick and easy weeknight meal. I broiled for close to 5 minutes at the end of the cooking time, which I found helped with thickening the sauce. It was also great the next day leftover. I think I could have been more generous with the chilli flakes, but I’ll know that for next time. I’ll be making this again for sure 🙂
Hey Heather,
Perfect!! I am delighted to hear that this recipe turned out well for you and thanks so much for trying it out! xx
Not sticky just soupy. This recipe was a huge bust. I followed the directions, measured the ingredients and ended up with dry chicken, over cooked broccoli in a gingery soup. I did try adding corn starch and broiling and still no. Flavour was great but everything else was not.
Hi Kris,
So sorry to hear you had some issues with this recipe. I’m shocked the cornstarch didn’t help at all. Did you just add the cornstarch or did you make a slurry? Let me know how I can help! xx
I think I will add gochuhang
I hope you love the recipe Kathleen!!
Can I substitute the pomegranate juice for black cherry?
Hey Kathleen,
Sure, I don’t see why not! Please let me know if you have any other questions, I hope this turns out well for you! xx
The flavor of the sauce is good, but literally nothing else about the recipe was a success. I tried the Instant Pot method, and I had a feeling the cooking time/method wasn’t going to work but was willing to give it a shot. The result was overcooked chicken breasts and obliterated broccoli in a soupy mess. Broiling wasn’t even an option at that point. I guess I could have poured off the liquid and cooked it down, but it seemed like a lost cause by then. Again, great sauce flavor, but there’s no way cooking in the Instant Pot yields a meal I’d ever repeat. Bummer!
Hi Sarah,
Happy Monday! So glad to hear you enjoyed the sauce. Sorry to hear you had issues with the rest of the recipe. Please let me know if there is anything that I can help with! Thanks for giving this dish a try! xT
We enjoyed this meal! The sauce was flavorful and complemented the chicken and broccoli! I would recommend it and will make it again!
Hey Robin,
Happy Monday!! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! xT
Generally love your recipes but the instantpot instructions delivered dry chicken, mushy broccoli and watery sauce. It was barely edible. I’ll give a try in the oven next time.
Hi Laura,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear it didn’t turn out in the instant pot! xx
Did you use skinless breats? It looks like skin on, but when you cut in chucks it so often just falls off
Hey Carolyn,
Yes, for this recipe I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Please let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love this recipe! xx
Just made this and it is killer! The whole meal was so quick and the flavors are delicious!
Hey Melissa,
Happy Sunday!! Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try and your comment, so glad to hear it was enjoyed! xT
Wow! This was a delicious, easy quick meal on a Friday night. My husband and I both loved it. I broiled two minutes longer and the sauce was a perfect consistency and had delicious flavor. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will make more sauce and possibly add some additional vegetables such as carrots and water chestnuts. To lower the carbs I made cauliflower rice.
Hey Sue,
Awesome!! So glad to hear that this recipe was enjoyed and thanks so much for making it! Have a great weekend:)
I have to add cornstarch to quite a few HBH recipes and normally it works out ok but this one the sauce tasted great (but fully liquid) before cornstarch then was ruined by adding it to thicken. Would love to know a trick to get these sticky!
Hey Elizabeth,
Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback! Sorry about the cornstarch! Next time, I would let the sauce broil longer or just boil it down on the stove top before adding to the chicken. I hope this helps! xT
There is clearly missing directions or ingredients in this recipe. Followed it to a t and no way the sauce is thick and sticky. I would skip this one…
Hey Deb,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback! So sorry to hear you found the sauce not to be thick enough, but it really just needs to broil a bit longer for a thicker consistency. xT
Very yummy! Definitely needed the cornstarch slurry to thicken. Would try adding in some more veggies – maybe some chunks of onion and sliced carrot would be a nice addition. Served with cauliflower rice to minimize calories.
Hey Brooke,
Happy Thursday! So glad to hear that you enjoyed this recipe and thanks so much for making it! xT
