Sesame Ginger Orange Chicken Salad. With lots and lots of crispy, salty, fried wontons. This yummy Asian-inspired salad is a mix of fresh greens, chicken, juicy sweet oranges, creamy avocado, and delicious crunchy nuts, all topped with those crispy wontons. Everything is tossed together with my favorite toasted sesame and ginger salad dressing. I know you’ll find it delicious. This salad is a wonderful mix of savory, sweet, and salty. It’s no-cook, fast, easy to toss together, bright and colorful, plus, of course, totally delicious!

It’s been a minute since I shared a bright and fresh colorful salad. I thought this salad would be perfect to break up all the cozy soups and pasta. It’s all about having a nice balance!

As I work away on this post, I’m in New York, but once this post goes live, I’ll be home and back in the kitchen. After a week of eating out, I could not be more excited to cook for myself again. It’s cold here, so I’m still craving warming foods, but adding a bright salad to the mix is a must.

Especially one loaded with so much vitamin C!

I’ve wanted to make an orange chicken salad for a while now. Whenever I head to a Chinese restaurant, it’s always the first thing I order. I’ve always enjoyed the savory, sweet, tangy, and salty flavors.

I hesitated because I wasn’t sure how to make the salad feel like my own. But then, I started making fried wontons for my brother Red over the holidays. Ever since I’ve been regularly adding them to so many recipes. I’m loving them!

Obviously, an orange chicken salad is the perfect fit for homemade crispy wontons!

Here are details

I like to start with the dressing. It’s a mix of sesame oil, toasted sesame oil, honey, tamari, fresh ginger, garlic, orange zest, and toasted sesame seeds.

Honestly, this has become one of my favorite dressings. The toasted oil, honey, and tamari make it lick-the-spoon-good. And the ginger gives it a nice spicy yet fresh kick. If you love any of my Asian sauces, you’ll enjoy this!

The wontons are incredibly easy to make. All you need are oil and wonton wrappers. I love to use avocado oil when frying.

Cut the wonton wrappers into strips, then do a shallow fry in the oil until crisp. It only takes a minute and is super easy. Then I’ll usually sprinkle them with flaky salt.

And on to the actual salad…cabbage, greens, chicken, fresh oranges, avocado, and lots of dressing. The dressing really is key, it’s what brings in all the flavor. Then finish the salad with so many of those fried wontons, they are delicious!

If you’re looking to switch up your chicken salad, this is a great option for lunch or dinner! Enjoy this salad on its own or try serving it with your favorite dumpling soup or some Sesame Ginger Dumplings. Yum!

    1. Hi Sophie,
Yes, you are going to need both for this recipe:) Please let me know if you have any other questions! xT

  1. I’m trying this tonight, but the in the video, you talk about candied jalapeños, but they aren’t listed in the recipe. Also, how are you preparing your chicken?

  2. Your TikTok clip showed you preparing/cooking chicken for this salad. Where is the particulars on the chicken recipe? It appeared to be thighs and complimentary sauce/seasonings. I try and avoid rotisserie chicken (not the best quality) and your chicken looked like it made the recipe. Thank you.

  3. I’d like to make this and am curious about the amount (weight or number) of wonton wrappers in your package? I buy them at the Asian grocery store in a big freezer package and don’t know if there is another type of package you’re working off of. Thank you!

    1. Hi Michaela,
I used a 12 ounce package:) Let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love this salad! xT

    1. Hi there,
The recipe is correct, it calls for 2 different types and amounts of sesame oil:) Please let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love this recipe! xx

Amazing and so simple. Substituted chow mein noodles for the fried wontons to make it easier

Excellent salad! I love an Asian salad and this hits all the things for me! I did make a few adjustments to use up ingredients I had on hand. I grilled up some chicken instead of shredding chicken–a rotisserie chicken would be great for this. I used canned mandarin orange slices and bought wonton strips instead of making my own. I skipped the avocado and added bell pepper strips instead for some veggies; also added cilantro because I love cilantro. : ) The dressing is AMAZING! I ran out of sesame oil, so for the 1/4 c. toasted sesame oil, I used 1/4 c. olive oil instead.
I will be making this recipe again this summer!

      1. So so yummy! I had to look up how to fry the wontons, but figured it out and it was so worth it!!
Makes more dressing than needed, but it’s soooo good I know we’ll use it up!

This salad was soooooo perfect! The balance of sweet, salty, acid, crunchy… oh my! I marinated a couple of chicken breasts in the dressing before cutting them into bite sized pieces and frying them in a little avo oil with the marinade until they were browned (those sesame/ginger little crunchy bits in the pan – mmm!!) I also put a dash of hot pepper toasted sesame oil to the dressing as another person suggested and that little bit of kick was nice! Adding this salad to the dinner rotation along with Tieghan’s equally delicious Greek chopped chicken salad!

I have made this twice now in a month and keep coming back to it for my husband and I’s quick weeknight meal! This is going to be a spring and summer staple in our home as the bright flavors with crisp lettuce crunchiness is a great bite as the weather warms up. I add in just a bit of hot sesame oil to the dressing for a bit of a kick to compliment the sweetness of the orange and it’s great!

As all of your recipes, it was simply Delicious and definitely restaurant worthy! I did the pulled chicken in the crockpot and added some veggies I had on hand (cucumbers, peppers and some raddichio). Didn’t have wonton so fried some tortillas. It was amazing and will keep in my favorite!
