Slow Cooker Mustard Herb Chicken and Creamy Orzo. Turning a classic dinner recipe into an easy slow cooker meal using white wine, creamy Dijon mustard, fresh herbs, parmesan cheese, and orzo. I even added in some vibrant broccoli for veggies and color. This slow-cooked chicken dinner is a hearty and delicious meal to come home to at the end of a busy day. And the best part? It’s the easiest dinner to prepare. You simply can’t go wrong with a dinner like this herby chicken and creamy orzo.

Breaking out a slow cooker recipe today and it’s not even October. Yes, it may be a bit early. But I’m pretty sure that most of us appreciate a good slow cooker dinner almost any time of the year. They’re just so easy!

This is one of those dishes that I’ve been wanting to make for the longest time now. But I told myself to hold off until the autumn days started to set in. It’s just so cozy and perfect for fall. It’s creamy, herby, a touch buttery, and has the BEST flavor. I love the fact that the chicken and orzo are cooked together in the slow cooker. It makes everything come together effortlessly.

It’s loosely inspired by my French wine and mustard chicken, but it’s made with a few additions…that I think, make it even better!

This is perfect for this time when the days might be warmer, but the nights are cooler. It’s going to be great all fall and winter long.

Here are the details

As you can imagine, this is really simple. Just place the chicken in the crockpot and rub it with olive oil and that mustard. Then add a ton of fresh thyme, sage, and garlic.
Now, pour in the wine and apple cider, then add some shallots.
I love to use apple cider in this for a slight air of warming fall flavor. It pairs so wonderfully with the white wine, herbs, and mustard. I know it sounds odd, but trust me, the apple cider adds such a nice flavor.

At this point, just cover the crockpot and cook. You can speed things up by cooking on high, or go low and slow. Alternately, you can use the instant pot, but I do prefer the crockpot method.

When the chicken has cooked, pull it out and set it on a small sheet pan.

Now the orzo

Here’s where the orzo comes in. Add the orzo to all the yummy broth in the crockpot along with some broccoli. Now simply cover and cook a few minutes longer, until the orzo is al dente.
Meanwhile, I love to add a little butter to the chicken. Then throw it under the broiler for a couple of minutes to crisp up. This is totally optional, but I do think it adds to the dish.
When the orzo is finished, add in a touch of cream and parmesan too.

And now serve it up!

So simple and quick with barely any clean-up and minimal hands-on time.
The simplest dinner, and so great for busy weeknights…hearty, creamy – and so freaking good!

Sadly wasn’t thrilled with this one. It wasn’t bad, but found it a bit ‘meh’. Couldn’t pick up on much of the herb flavor, and it wasn’t as creamy as I hoped it would be. I did it in IP, so I may try again either stovetop or slow cooker to see if the flavors deepen a bit.

    1. Hey Sara,

  2. If I am making this for meal prep will the orzo end up soggy a couple days later? Can’t wait to try it!

Very tasty! Used stovetop method and wound up adding about another cup of liquid in total so that the orzo turned out creamy and perfect. I might use less lemon juice next time for our taste. Chicken was outstanding with the mustard and herbs!

This was a great recipe with really nice flavor. I did the stove top version- I live in Colorado so any pasta or rice takes longer and ended up having to add a 14oz can of chicken broth when I added the orzo in addition to the other liquid- came out fine. And somehow I missed the heavy cram so at the last minute I subbed in some ricotta cheese and sour cream which totally worked. Would definitely make again!

    1. Hey Natale,

Made this for the first time a few weeks ago and we loved it! I was tired of reusing the same recipes week after week and although I have tried multiple of your dessert recipes, I hadn’t tried an actual meal of yours yet. Told my hubby to pick a few and I picked a few to try out over the coming weeks. This was the first one and we made and are excited to try out more! We made no substitutions other than adding some extra cheese on top. We used the coconut milk this time but next time will try heavy cream to hopefully thicken the dish up a bit (just our personal prefereance)

    1. Hey Carissa,

How embarrassing.. I also used apple cider vinegar by mistake! Wow, was it potent! Everything else turned out really well consistency-wise. I’ll try again for sure with the right ingredients!

    1. So sorry Lindsay!! Thanks for giving the recipe a try! Let me know if you give this another go with the apple cider or broth:) xx

    2. I did the SAME thing, the chicken is dry yet flavorful but I haven’t tried the orzo just yet 🤦🏻‍♀️

    3. 5 stars
I too accidentally used apple cider vinegar 🤦‍♀️
I still liked it though 😅🤔
My family on the other hand, did not. I will definitely make again, but with apple cider, not apple cider vinegar.

  7. What could I substitute for white wine? I’m pregnant and we don’t normally cook with wine so I’m trying to avoid buying a bottle just for 1 cup. Thanks!

    1. Hey Lauren,
You can use chicken broth in place of the wine, that will work well for you! I hope you love this recipe, let me know if you give it a try! xT

This had way too much liquid??? There is no creamy texture at all like in the pictures? I even added > 2 cups orzo? It’s more of a soup

    1. Hi Claire,
Thanks for giving this recipe a try and sharing your feedback, so sorry to hear you had some issues. Which cooking method did you use? Was there anything you adjusted? Let me know how I can help! xT

  9. I cut this recipe in half as I’m cooking for 1. I wasn’t sure if the apple cider was a typo that left off “vinegar” so used the broth option instead. Reading the reviews I now know it wasn’t a typo and will try next time for a pop of flavor. It was good though! I had almost all the ingredients already on hand, love that.

    1. Hey Katie,
Happy Sunday!!💕 Thanks so much for trying this recipe out and sharing your feedback, so glad it was a hit! xx

Delicious! The apple cider gives it great flavor! I did the crock pot method. Cooked on low for about 4 hours and took chicken out before turning to high and adding broccoli and orzo. I didn’t do the broiler part but cut chicken into bite size pieces and added back once the orzo was done. That way it was so easy for friends to eat from a bowl while watching football game. Oh, also added a bit of chicken broth at the end. Everyone loved it and asked for the recipe! Another hit from HBH!

    1. Hey Anne,
Happy Monday!! I appreciate you giving this recipe a try and sharing your review, so glad to hear it turned out well! xT

  11. Gluten free substitute for Orzo? Do you have any recommendations? I was thinking arborio rice but it may take longer and/or need more liquid. Gluten free orzo always turns to mush!

    1. Hey Ellie,
Arborio rice should work well for you following the recipe as written! Please let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love this recipe! xx

Funny story: Instead of putting apple cider, I put a cup of apple cider VINEGAR!! hahahaha. A funny fail. I can tell it would have been delicious otherwise. Very excited to try it again.

    1. I did the same thing with the apple cider vinegar. When you see “apple cider” you kind of automatically think, apple cider vinegar. It might be a good idea to make a point in the recipe that’s it’s not VINEGAR. I’ve never cooked with apple cider, let alone seen it at the store. Spent $20 bucks i”on chicken and a ton of extra ingredients trying to balance out the vinegar.

Loved this! It was like comfort food but with a unique herby flavor. I made the stovetop version and it was great. Some notes:
    – I read some reviews that the orzo didn’t cook well so I took special care on this step. I stirred every few minutes, and tasted the pasta at 6, 8, and 10 minutes to see when it was ready. I had to add extra water to keep the orzo from sticking to the bottom of the dutch oven around 6 and 8 minutes.
    – I used 2 cups of broccoli instead of 1.5 cups just for preference of extra greens. May have been the reason I needed to add more water.
    – To make it creamier and more comfort foody – I almost doubled the amount of parmesan and topped it with some mozzarella cheese before serving. We love cheese here haha
    – I did half apple cider and half chicken broth cause I wasn’t sure I wanted to full amount of apple cider in there from a personal preference.
    – I used Pinot Grigio for my white wine.

For those who didn’t think it had enough flavor:
    – make sure you use fresh sage and fresh thyme – this will make all the difference
    – make sure you use enough salt (my chicken broth had salt and I generously salted the chicken)
