Switching up our Easter app options with these Oven Fried Feta Rolls with Chili Honey. Greek phyllo dough rolled up with feta cheese, garlic, and fresh dill, then baked until warm, golden, and crisp. Serve these yummy, oven fried rolls with spicy honey for dipping. Such an easy appetizer that everyone always loves!
Easter is this Sunday, and while I previously shared My favorite Easter Recipes with you all, there’s always room at the table for additional food, especially appetizers. And trust me, you’ll want to make these.
When I had this idea the other day I was so excited to create the recipe and share it with my family. I knew they would love these simple rolls. I don’t often cook with phyllo dough, so they felt fun and different.
When I think of Easter, I always sway towards Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. Feta and phyllo dough are commonly paired together in Greek cooking, so I knew the combination would be delicious.
I wanted to add a little sauce, and honey is always my go-to when serving feta as an appetizer. The sweetness really balances out the saltiness of the cheese.
Phyllo dough can be intimidating to work with. But as long as you keep the dough covered with a damp towel while working, it’s not difficult!
Because phyllo is so thin, it tears easily, so just go slowly while assembling. And as I said, keep the dough covered. When phyllo dries out, it cracks and becomes hard to work with.
Also, you should know that your first roll will not be perfect. But have extra sheets of phyllo on hand and by the end, you’ll have the rolling perfected.
Start by combining the feta, dill, and garlic. Then add some olive oil to a bowl for brushing. Use the oil when you feel like the dough is getting dry, it will keep it wet.
Lay the phyllo out, add the feta, and then tuck and roll like a burrito. It’s not fancy, I promise! Brush each roll with olive oil before baking, then bake until golden.
While baking, make the honey sauce. I did a spicy chili butter honey sauce with just a little oil, butter, chili flakes, and cumin seed. You can cook the spices in the butter and oil to really bring out their flavor before adding the honey.
The spiciness and sweetness really balance with the salty, herby flavors in the rolls.
I love to serve these warm, but they’re delish at room temperature too! And if you want to prepare the rolls ahead of time and bake off before guests arrive, that works too! Just keep the pan covered until you’re ready to bake.
These will be so perfect for Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, and anytime you need a quick, simple, and different appetizer! They’re a hit every time!

The sweet heat with the feta and crunch.. Delicious ❤️?… first time Phyllo user.. practice makes perfect. Will make again.
Hey Nikki,
Awesome!! Love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! Have the best weekend:) xx
In the photo the phyllo was cut in an elongated triangle. Your instructions are not consistent with that image – it is a rectangle. Can you explain the discrepancy? Have you done it both ways – do you prefer one of them?
Hi Frankie,
Please ignore the triangle, you can follow the recipe as is, it will be much easier as a rectangle. I hope you love them! xTieghan
Can you make this a few days ahead of time and leave in the fridge before baking?
Hi Beth,
That should be okay for you to do, I would keep them covered with a damp cloth. Please let me know how the recipe turns out, I hope you love it! xx
Could you make them up to the baking point and then freeze and bake later
Hey Lucy,
That should work well for you! Let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx
Can these be made ahead of time and cook just before serving?
Hey Ann,
Sure, that will work well for you, I would just keep them in the fridge covered with a damp cloth. I hope the recipe turns out amazing for you, let me know if you have any other questions! xx
I am loving your recipesand want to try this one but my husband is not a huge fan of feta – what other cheese could I try?
Hey Gwen,
Really any other cheese that you enjoy will work here, goat cheese would be a great option!! I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xx
Could this be done in an air fryer?
Hey there,
Sure, I bet that will work well for you! I hope this recipe turns out amazing, let me know if you give it a try! xx
Hi Tieghan – I’m excited to try these. Any suggestions regarding making them in advance? Could I prep them, cover them with damp paper towels and keep them in the fridge till baking? What would you recommend?
PS – It was so amazing to meet you during your book tour!
Hey Melinda,
Yes, that will work well for you! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xx
Looks delicious!!! I’m thinking some fig butter would also be a good dipping sauce!
Thanks Mindy!! Sure, that would be delicious! xx
Would you be able to make these in the frozen phyllo cups?
Hey Chris,
Sure, that should work well for you! Let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xx
The phylo dough at Target is not available,do you have another link?
Really? You give it 1 star because Target stopped selling phyllo dough?
One star because you can’t find phyll0? There’s this new company called Amazon, and their bricks-and-mortar competitor, Walmart, you might want to try either onf of those.
Hi there,
You can find phyllo dough in the freezer section of your local grocery store:) Please let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love the recipe! xx
It looks as though you cut 2 pieces of the phyllo in half on the diagonal from the short end rather than folding it in half? Then used two pieces of the triangles rolled from their long end to make the rolls? It appears this would result in all the lovely crunchy seams as pictured rather than flat when folded in half! Is this correct??
Hi Carol,
You can follow the directions as is, please ignore the triangle, you will want to just fold the phyllo you will not have to do any cutting, so you will end up with a rectangle. I hope this makes sense!! xTieghan
If you are preparing for a party would you suggest 1. pre making and baking just before party or pre making, baking, and then reheating for party?
Could you substitute puff pastry sheets for the phyllo? Thanks!
Hi Jill,
For this recipe I would stick with the phyllo dough. Here are some recipes that I use puff pastry in that you might enjoy:

Please let me know if you have any other questions! xx
Hey Renee,
I would pre-make these and keep in the fridge until you are ready to bake and serve at your party. I hope this recipe turns out amazing for you, let me know if you give it a try! xx
Did you cut the phyllo? In the picture it looks like it is cut in a triangle
Need more info about cutting phyllo sheet as pictured!
The written directions state to cut the filo sheets in half and roll burrito style (from a rectangle sheet). I think the triangle sheet was used for the visual effect only which could be wrapped around the top of the built rectangle rolls (you can see the graduated layers in one of the photos). If you were to just work from a triangle alone the filling would squish out or you’d get a lot less filling when trying to roll and wrap. Not worth the extra effort IMO. I would just roll it like an egg roll or burrito. Why make life more complicated. Just my two cents!
Hi Susan,
Please ignore the triangle, I rewrote the instructions so hopefully they are more clear. I hope you love the recipe! xx
I am annoyingly wimpy/picky about cheese and don’t like feta. Think I could sub halloumi to the same effect?
Hey Jill,
Sure, that would be delicious! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xx
Hi Camille,
You don’t need to cut the phyllo dough, just fold it in half, ignore the triangle:) You will have rectangles that will be much easier to fold and roll. I hope this helps! xx
That’s exactly the question I scrolled to find. Thanks!
This looks amazing – as I’m not a fan of dill would something like oregano work or another herb?
Hey Mel,
Sure, any herb you like will work:) I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xx
