Someone please teach me how to use my broiler.
Let’s just say my first loaf of bread was blackened. Blackened bread equals not photogenic.
Luckily I had another loaf on hand, but it was not the pretty whole grain loaf I wanted. No, instead you get to look a white loaf that I still managed to burn. The white loaf was for the boys, they would never dare to touch anything that might possibly not be refined, full of sugar and maybe a just a tad healthy for them.
Oh and if you are wondering what I did with the blackened loaf you would be right if you guessed that I scraped the black top off and used what was left of the bread. Growing up with six brothers my parents always made sure NO food was wasted. So the whole no wasting of any food thing is ingrained into me.
Although if you asked my mom she would tell you I waste too much food, but that is only because she thinks food that is a good eight to ten days old is still edible.
And to that all I have to say is “I am not trying to kill anyone”.
My brothers however would tell you the opposite. They HATE it when they find the buffalo chicken from the night before mixed into their pasta. I say that’s delicious, but I am telling you guys these boys are picky and they have the most bland taste buds you can ever imagine.
It is ridiculously annoying.
Lets talk about these subs. Not avocados, tortilla chips or salsa!
Switching gears for today, but don’t worry the fiesta will return tomorrow.
When we lived in Ohio there was this restaurant, Penn Station. If you live on the East coast you may know what I am talking about. Basically they sell a whole lot of subs and french fries. People kind of love it.
To be honest I can not remember for the life of me what I used to order. It is driving me insane. Why can I not remember! This is going to bug me for days.
Anyhoo, my brother Kai, he loves the Teriyaki chicken subs. Oh and obviously the fries. He really loves those.
So I made the teriyaki chicken subs. Of course his were minus the onion, peppers and green onions. Yes, I picked them out for him. Please tell me I get an award for best sister or something?
Alright so
That is of course unless you turn you bread into charcoal and have to go to the store for more.
Really, don’t do this. It’s not a fun sight to open the oven to burnt bread.
What you should do is make these subs. They are just so gosh darn delicious. Really they are going to blow you socks off (is that cheesy enough for you?)!!

Cheesy, sweet, sticky goodness…..the best combo!
You must be cooking just for me this week. I clicked you from Diana Ramble’s party twice in a row without even realizing it. Just cuz it sounded good. Thanks for sharing and I’ll add this to my pin boards.
Ya! I love when this happens!! Thank you for pinning and clicking over!
These look really delicious! We just got a Penn Station here in Knoxville. We LOVEsandwiches! yummy!
I mean love THEIR sandwiches. 🙂
I know! Thanks cindy!
Lucky you!! Thanks cindy!
That is one delicious looking sandwich! Really gorgeous photos too!
Thank you Rosie!
These really look amazing! Your photography always astounds me. Pease come live by me ;). A hint to the broiler…stay next to it the whole time, light on, watching. Broiler does a fast job to make yummy food.
Thanks for sharing on Foodie Friday
HA! Thank you Adelina! And yes, standing by the broiler is a very smart idea!
These look yummy!
Thank you Jeni!
If I can remember back to my home-economics classes… I think we were taught that when broiling you leave the door cracked open. Usually broiling is such a brief process. If nothing else, the open door reminds you to keep checking your food.
I remember my dad cracking the door. This is great tip! Thanks Sally!
Gorgeous, gorgeous sandwiches! Broilers can be cranky, I feel ya!
Thank you Meagan! My broiler and I are not very good friends!
This looks amazing! I love the sweet onion chicken teriyaki subs at Subway but these look even better! I love that you made your own teriyaki sauce too!
Thanks Natalle!! Homemade teriyaki is so easy and so much better for you!
Ah yes….the broiler can be tricky. My best advice (after burning many things) do not, I repeat do not multi task while something is in the broiler. move a chair by your oven, sit down and stare at the broiling food. That is the only way I have found success. And I have been baking/burning for over 40 years!!
This recipe looks wonderful. Thanks.
ha! You are so right! Best advice I have ever received! Thanks Cindy!
I love that you made your own teriyaki sauce! I always get super paranoid when using my broiler because for some reason it freaks me out! I think it’s because nothing will happen, you blink, and your food is burning. It’s ridiculous. Anyway, love these subs! They’re going on my ever growing “to make someday” list!
HA! Thanks Faith!! Hope your start cracking down on that list!
Oh my goodness darlin’! Wow. These look sooooo good. I have to make these soon. I just pinned it. I don’t think I have any more peppers, I’ll have to go get some. I love the sauce. Mmm. I think I’m hungry 🙂 Krista @ A Handful of Everything
Thanks for pinning Krista! Hope you love these!
OK, when I go eat at Subway I usually order the sweet chicken teriyaki chicken with a bunch of vegetables. This is so going to replicate one of my favorite subs.
Know way! I had no idead subway had one of these subs!! Hope you love it Meagan!
This looks amazing!
Thanks Dorothy!
Great idea, Tieghan! I love your creativity!
Thank you Cassie!!
Sometimes I have a hard time with my broiler too. Pretty sure it’s because I get impatient, nothing seems to be happening, so I go do something else, and then turn around and everything is burned. Oops.
Ha. Yes, this is exactly what I do! LOL
