It doesn’t look like it, but when you read this recipe, to me, it screams retro. Retro, like a recipe your grandma would have made way back in the day. This is totally something my Nonnie would have made on repeat.

It’s EASY, which we of course love. My Nonnie was a real pro at creating delicious dinners that took very little effort on her part. She knew her time was better spent shopping with me!

Her secret was using ingredients that did double the work. She would incorporate a lot of store-bought seasoning packets and sauces to add flavor. She’d also take shortcuts whenever she could. But regardless, her dinners were always delicious, and I know she’d fully approve of this recipe.

So what is the “retro” secret ingredient here? A little bit of ketchup. It gives this sticky sauce added body, flavor, and sweetness.

I know it’s not a new concept by any means, but I don’t often use ketchup for cooking. I usually reserve it for dipping my french fries. But I’m now sold on using ketchup in sauces. Sounds odd, but wow, it’s so delicious.

The details

This recipe is so simple and straightforward. Grab some broccoli and chicken, I love to use a mix of chicken breasts and thighs. My family prefers chicken breasts, but I think thighs always add flavor. They give just the right amount of fat to keep chicken from drying out. I find a mix is always nice!

Arrange the chicken and broccoli inside a baking dish. I use a smaller sheet pan with sides. Ideally, you want to use something a little smaller than a 9×13 inch baker. This will allow the sauce to better thicken around the chicken. A sheet pan with sides is perfect!

Now the sauce. Mix equal amounts of honey, ketchup, and tamari (or soy sauce) together. Then add tart pomegranate juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix and pour the sauce over the chicken.

Bake until the sauce thickens slightly around the pieces of chicken and broccoli.

At the end of cooking, I like to switch the oven to the broil setting and get the chicken caramelized on top. Just watch closely, the broiler can really work FAST.

I was shocked at how well the timing of everything ended up working out. Nothing fancy here, just simple cooking, but very delicious.

Serve the sauce, chicken, and broccoli over steamed rice with plenty of green onions, and if you’re into it, pomegranates too. I love using them because they add color and juiciness.

This was delicious, even my 1.5year old loved it. I saw the reviews about the watery sauce, so I mixed 1tbsp corn starch with 2tbsp water and added it to the sauce. I mixed the chicken and broccoli around after baking and before broiling to make sure everything was fully coated. After broiling the sauce was perfect. Definitely recommend the added pomegranate at the end. Thanks for another great recipe!

Do not waste your time on this. I was so disappointed, pictures and video made it look so good, but it was watery, and chicken was tasteless. I followed the recipe exactly, even left it in the oven a bit longer to see if the sauce would thicken up. I’ve reread the recipe so many times to see if I missed something, but did everything as instructed.

        1. Hi Gabriela,
So sorry to hear this recipe did not turn out for you. I would recommend allowing the chicken to broil longer, that usually helps to thicken it up! Again, sorry for the trouble! xT

  2. This didn’t really work for me. The sauce didn’t reduce well (even after removing the chicken and broiling the sauce) and tasted too much like tomato. My husband ate it happily but I was expecting something quite different. I will note that it didn’t taste like ketchup though. I am posting this in case people are choosing between this and your other sticky chicken recipes.

Loved the flavor of this recipe! We had a hard time getting the sauce to thicken though. Could this recipe be made in a wok on the stovetop, similar to your orange sesame chicken from Super Simple? Thank you!

The flavor of this is sooooo good! But this is my second time making this and I can not get the sauce to thicken up while broiling? Any tips??

    1. Hey Hannah,

I read reviews and made a few cooking method adjustments (no flavor adjustments though) but sadly it wasn’t our favorite HBH recipe we’ve tried. I roasted broccoli with the sauce and cooked chicken separately, then added together at end to broil, making sure to leave behind all chicken drippings. I also made extra sauce on the stovetop with a little cornstarch slurry and added on top before serving. Unfortunately the flavor was just off, in our opinion.

This was SO good. I have been looking for a sauce like this for so long. I added sesame seeds ontop as well as roasted carrots & sugar snap peas. Will def be making this OFTEN and switching up the veggies.

  8. This recipe is super easy and good! I made it with some tweaks for our preference. Added less honey and almost a half a cup of soy sauce and it came out smelling like orange chicken. My child liked it too it will definitely be in the dinner rotation.

This was a family favorite. Just cooked this week with basmati rice. Tip for next time, I will increase the broccoli. We were literally fighting over the last pieces. So delicious!

I made this using the oven method and it came out wonderfully. Very flavorful and the broccoli and chicken were nicely browned. I followed the recipe exactly and the sauce wasn’t watery at all.
