It doesn’t look like it, but when you read this recipe, to me, it screams retro. Retro, like a recipe your grandma would have made way back in the day. This is totally something my Nonnie would have made on repeat.

It’s EASY, which we of course love. My Nonnie was a real pro at creating delicious dinners that took very little effort on her part. She knew her time was better spent shopping with me!

Her secret was using ingredients that did double the work. She would incorporate a lot of store-bought seasoning packets and sauces to add flavor. She’d also take shortcuts whenever she could. But regardless, her dinners were always delicious, and I know she’d fully approve of this recipe.

So what is the “retro” secret ingredient here? A little bit of ketchup. It gives this sticky sauce added body, flavor, and sweetness.

I know it’s not a new concept by any means, but I don’t often use ketchup for cooking. I usually reserve it for dipping my french fries. But I’m now sold on using ketchup in sauces. Sounds odd, but wow, it’s so delicious.

The details

This recipe is so simple and straightforward. Grab some broccoli and chicken, I love to use a mix of chicken breasts and thighs. My family prefers chicken breasts, but I think thighs always add flavor. They give just the right amount of fat to keep chicken from drying out. I find a mix is always nice!

Arrange the chicken and broccoli inside a baking dish. I use a smaller sheet pan with sides. Ideally, you want to use something a little smaller than a 9×13 inch baker. This will allow the sauce to better thicken around the chicken. A sheet pan with sides is perfect!

Now the sauce. Mix equal amounts of honey, ketchup, and tamari (or soy sauce) together. Then add tart pomegranate juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix and pour the sauce over the chicken.

Bake until the sauce thickens slightly around the pieces of chicken and broccoli.

At the end of cooking, I like to switch the oven to the broil setting and get the chicken caramelized on top. Just watch closely, the broiler can really work FAST.

I was shocked at how well the timing of everything ended up working out. Nothing fancy here, just simple cooking, but very delicious.

Serve the sauce, chicken, and broccoli over steamed rice with plenty of green onions, and if you’re into it, pomegranates too. I love using them because they add color and juiciness.

WARNING!! Instapot times are SO off. It turned into straight mush!!! I was surprised with the 18-20 minutes but trusted and went with it. Luckily I was able to turn it into a soup but it ruined my dinner plans. As stated in other comments reduce instapot time to maybe 8-10 min. And PLEASE fix the recipe !!

Love the flavor and recipe was simple and quick to make. I cooked the chicken until 20 minute mark and switched to broiler for 3 min. At the end some of my chicken breast pieces were a little dry. All my pieces were uniformly cut for even cooking. Any suggestions for next time? Thank you.

  3. This sounds delicious. I may try if I can get the website stable enough to read. So many ads that it just keeps jumping around and resetting itself. You can do better.

I marinated the chicken in the sauce for 4 hours then noticing the comments about too much liquid, I added 1T of cornstarch dissolved in 1T hot water and stirred it into the chicken. I poured it into a 13×9 glass baking dish lined with double foil and baked at 350 for 20 minutes. Then I added the broccoli and baked for an additional 40 minutes. Still a little saucy, so I simmered it down in a saucepan, adding the cornstarch mixture again and it was perfect. I made it for a birthday dinner and my whole family loved it. I’ll try a large sheet pan and I can’t wait to test this out in my instant pot as well!
I may even marinate it overnight. The flavor was excellent! It’ll definitely be on repeat.

This sounds so good- and when it had an instapot option I was sold. Sadly the broccoli was mush it was so over cooked and the sauce was liquid- nothing sticky about it.

I followed the recipe as written (except that I added 1 Tbl of cornstarch to the sauce as someone suggested), and it was very yummy, not watery at all. I recommend using a larger rimmed baking sheet than you think you need because the more it is spread out, the more the sauce has the chance to bubble and thicken. We served it over steamed white rice and the whole family loved it.
My only issue is that some of the chicken did seem dry and tough from the oven, so definitely stir it all around a couple times while it’s cooking. Otherwise… YUM! We will be making this again! 🙂 thanks for another great recipe. ❤️

  8. I made all three separate, chicken, broccoli and sauce because of previous reviews then tossed together. It was perfect.

Loved. I took the Broccoli out after 30 min and let the chicken keep cooking. It made the sauce thicken up and was delicious! Will definitely make again.

followed instructions to the tee and came out super watery….not sticky nor saucy. really disappointed with this recipe

Delish! After reading the comments, I coated the chicken in a little corn starch and shortened the cooking time to 15 minutes before the broil (because I used chicken breast). Turned out perfect!

      Really watery.

Eatible but the flavor that comes with the sticky didnt come thru.

Anyone have tips on how to fix…worth trying again if I can figure out what I did wrong!!

      1. Absolutely amazing!!!! My husband and I just ate it and we LOVED IT. Thank you so much! Our favourite Asian dish at home

      2. Baking soda and cornstarch on chicken before placing in pan(not too much though)
Tbsp cornstarch mixed in the sauce mixture.
Cook on bottom shelf for first 15 minutes without broccoli.
Add broccoli later and move to top level of stove on higher heat for another 20 minutes.
To stop the chicken from drying out, mix the sauce and food around every 5-10
