Christmas Monster Cookies for your December weekend baking…festive, easy, and sweet. Homemade chocolate chip cookies, made with oats, pretzels pieces, plenty of chocolate chunks, white chocolate, and plenty of holiday M&M’s. There’s nothing not to love about these sweet chocolate (crunch) cookies. Each bite is slightly crisp on the edges but soft and gooey in the center…with just a little salty pretzel crunch and milk chocolate throughout.

Fridays in December are just better! There are holiday parties, searching for the perfect gift for someone you love, and baking the nights away with family and friends. Well, at least that’s the “Hallmark” version I have in my head.

The reality is a little less picture-perfect for sure, but I’m definitely doing the baking! It’s one of the reasons we love this season the most. I mean there are so many cookies! As I said on Tuesday, this year I’m really focusing on all of the holiday cookies I haven’t made before.

My list of cookies is a mile long, but I only have a handful of days to share them. So, I’m trying to pick the very best on my list. It’s tricky, but I always knew these cookies needed to be shared. The combination of ingredients is just too good.

The steps are easy

One: gather your ingredients. You’ll need the basics…butter, sugar, flour, etc. Simple, simple, nothing fancy, but all good.

Two: the stir-ins, they’re are the most important part. You’ll need old fashioned oats, salted pretzel twists, semi-sweet or dark chocolate chunks, and white chocolate chips. And then plenty of red and green holiday M&M’s, which really make these cookies.

Three: beat, mix, stir, bake.

Four: eat these cookies warm, just out of the oven, because these are those kind of gooey delicious cookies.

A couple notes

It’s important to note that these cookies do spread. They’re meant to have slightly crisp edges and perfectly soft gooey centers, just like in the photos. My favorite type of cookie…totally delicious.

If you want a bit of a thicker cookie, simply omit the additional egg yolk and use only two eggs. This will give you a thicker cookie without as much spreading.

To get the M&M’s to really pop, I like to add in a few just before the cookies finish baking completely. This way each cookie has a bit of the festive M&M’s right on top.

What I love about these cookies is that they’re so easy to make. They require no chilling and they really are completely no fuss. Especially when it comes to Christmas cookies.

These cookies have perfectly crisp edges, yet soft and gooey centers. They’ve got a nice crunch plus a little saltiness from the pretzels – the best kind of cookie.

I’m excited to include these in the year’s Christmas cookie box. They’re perfect for packing up and gifting to friends for the holidays!

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vanilla until combined. Beat in the eggs and 1 egg yolk, 1 at a time, until combined. Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Beat in the oats.
    3. Fold in 1 cup of the M&M's, the pretzels, chocolate chips, and white chocolate.
    4. Roll the dough into 1/4 cup size balls. Place 3 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
    5. Transfer to the oven and bake for 8 minutes, then rotate the pan and bake another 2 minutes. Pull the pan out and push the remaining M&M's into the cookies. Bake 2-3 minutes. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet. They will continue to cook slightly as they sit on the baking sheet.
    6. Eat warm (highly recommended) or let cool and store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

    Hey!!
Thank you so much for another fabulous recipe! First, I have to tell you my Big (18 people) immediate family, we are ALL obsessed with your recipes! We all follow, have cookbooks, watch Instagram for your latest updates & recipes ❤️❤️❤️❤️ We refer to you simply as Tiegen, since we all know who we are referring to 😂🤣😂🤣
So thank you for brightening our days & meals!
My question is I would love to make this recipe again but my husband & I couldn’t eat the whole batch while they are still fresh. Can you freeze the dough balls? How would baking work with the different steps….still add extra m&m’s?
Thank you again & blessings to your whole amazing family!!

great recipe! I have made these a few times, not always with the same chocolate and/or candy pieces but always delicious! Yesterday, I did not feel like taking the time for cookies so I did a free form…simply spread the dough on parchment on a sheet pan.

    1. Hi Lauren,
Happy Friday!! Thanks a lot for giving this recipe a go, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! xxTieghan

These cookies are soooooo good!!! I love all the different textures and flavors. The pretzels in particular are such a fun addition. I knew they would be good because I also love your salted caramel pretzel snickerdoodles, but I think these monster cookies are even better.

Made these last night and they are delicious! I had to add peanut butter because it is one of my favorite parts of monster cookies and since we are past Christmas, I used dark chocolate M&M’s. The crushed pretzels were a great addition, not going to lie, I was a little hesitant about adding them. Overall, awesome monster cookie recipe, will keep this one in the rotation!

    1. Hi Erin,
I really appreciate you giving the recipe a try, so glad to hear that it was enjoyed! Have a great week! xxT

I ran out of time at Christmas to make these, but I still had the m and ms waiting! Made these for after school snack and they were a hit. Everyone loves the oats and pretzels in it and I agree, definitely great additions. I appreciate any recipe that uses dark brown sugar! A great cookie for when you’re looking for something a little unexpected!

  6. Made these Christmas Eve. They’re a lot of work just for cookies tbh. I prefer to stick to a simpler cookie in the future but it’s always fun trying out new recipes. I think it would have been better to just sprinkle them with flaky sea salt instead of pretzels since there is already so much going on in the cookie. This recipe is very versatile to whatever you want to put in them though so you can get creative.

    1. Hi Sammi,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try, I have to disagree, I really don’t think this recipe could get any easier. Let me know if I can help in anyway for next time! xTieghan

  7. Making these today! So excited!

Does anyone know if it would be best to freeze or refrigerate the extra dough? I’m not gonna make the whole batch at once!

    1. Hi Barbara,
If you are not using the dough within the next week, I would freeze it. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

These are my new favorite cookie! I made them for Christmas and everyone who tried one loved the salty sweet balance. I swapped white chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips because that’s what I had on hand.

I make cookie trays each year at Christmas. In the past I’ve done regular m&m cookies, but these will now take their place!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe. Can’t wait to make them again!

    1. Hey Danielle,

We love these cookies! You can throw in anything you have on hand – we’ve done roasted, crushed pistachios in lieu of pretzels. We regularly use dark chocolate chips, and add cinnamon and nutmeg to the mix. We sprinkle a sugar/cinnamon/freshly grated nutmeg on top when they are fresh out of the oven. We made at a cookie-making party and had run out of brown sugar, so used white sugar and some molasses. They always turn out delicious!

    1. Hey Kate,

I made these on Christmas Eve….huuuugggge hit with my family. So yummy…I hid a few and froze for my nightly treat. 30 seconds in the mwave …delicious. Will make again without changing a thing!

My six yr old grandson was just diagnosed with celiac. He is such a picky eater, even with treats! He also hates oatmeal cookies. So, I made them gluten free. Well, he loved them! It was so easy to convert them to gluten free. Thanks for the great recipe!

  12. 5 stars
These turned out perfect! Your directions are so easy to follow which I appreciated and the cookies were delicious and wonderful with the touch of oats. Thanks, T!

I made a gluten free version of these and used peanut butter m&ms instead of regular and everyone loved them! I found they were better the next day, not sure why but yum!

Awesome!! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it. Have the best week! xTieghan

I really wanted to love these. They looked so Christmasy and fun. But they also looked chewy and someone else said theirs was. Mine were not chewy at all. They were dense and hard. Any idea what I could have done wrong?

    1. Hi Kelly,
Sorry to hear this, was there anything you adjusted in the recipe? Let me know how I can help! xTieghan

A friend made these gluten free for me as I was recovering from a long, terrible case of Covid. They are absolutely the most delicious cookies! Using Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 and GF pretzels worked perfectly. These will be a Christmas tradition from now on!

  18. This is a great recipe, made it twice already, one for my SIL’s cookie party and then again on Christmas Eve to bake fresh on Christmas Day. We’re always so full after Christmas Dinner I thought fresh cookies would be perfect and they were a hit. Chocolately, chewy, crunchy, sweet and salty, they have everything you want in a cookie, and served warm? Amazing. I used various holiday M&Ms on top, a white chocolate pretzel, peanut butter and some regular to add some variation. All were delicious.

Wow. These are the best cookies I have ever made.
Every single person that visited during Christmas were in a mini shock after they tasted them. Literally. Eyes widened. “What IS this cookie?!” was heard often. I had to share the recipe multiple times.
So good. I froze leftover cookie dough balls to have a cookie ready to pop in the oven in the weeks to come. I love them XXL size.

    1. Hi Jenna,
Awesome!! I am thrilled to hear this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! Happy Holidays!💥 xT

  22. Just made these- Sooo fabulous! The pretzel adds that certain yummy salty mysterious bit that the whole family adored. Great recipe! ~Thank you~

  23. Thanks for this recipe. I made it with Cup 4 Cup and subbed gluten free pretzels and “chocolate gems” aka naturally colored m&ms. Turned out amazing. Love the big size. Next time I want to add peanut butter chips too.

My fiancés favorite cookies!! So good – I only change the m&m’s by not adding to the cookie dough but a few on top at the end. I prefer this 🙂 thanks for sharing!

    1. If I wanted to freeze these to cook later, what would you suggest for the cook time? Could they go from freezer to oven or would they need thawed first?

      1. Hi MyKaila,
I would thaw first and bake as directed. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  25. My one soon to be two year old niece just whipped these up and I just put the second round in the oven.

For the first batch I forgot to take the out to add the m&ms. My sister and her girls still loved them.

I rolled up the remainder of the batter and placed them in the freezer because they were melting. I do have to say that I was scooping the dough with a quarter cup because I don’t have the big cookie scoop. Will freezing the dough make a difference?

  26. 5 stars
Gave these as Christmas gifts, and one for myself of course, absolutely delicious, super easy to make and look amazing too. Gifts went down a treat. Thank you for the recipe.

They came out very well! They were so good! I didnt use pretzels or the white chocolate because I couldn’t find any so I added extra chocolate chips, but next time I make them I will use the white chocolate and pretzels!

  28. 4 stars
I really like this recipe as it turned out well for me. The first time making it, I did not have pretzel. It was PERFECT. I went to the store and got pretzel to add in my second batch and it was a bit disappointing with the pretzels. The pretzels were not crunchy as it softened up in the batter. So the next batches of cookies, I stopped using the pretzels.

    1. Hi Naley,

  29. Followed it precisely and put it in a bit longer and still undercooked. Was going to gift it but if its undercooked, I will have to skip doing that. The cookies look pretty weird, like darker than most cookies. Hoping that they firm up more.

    1. Hi Hilary,
So sorry to hear this. Was there anything you may have adjusted in the recipe? The cookies will finish cooking once you pull them from the oven on the hot baking sheets. Please let me know how I can help! xTieghan

I may have put too many cookies on one sheet. Let’s just say it’s like a sheet cake full of heaven. I made the balls a bit smaller and put about 6 on sheet this time. If the spread and cook together again….square cookies for everyone! Excellent recipe.

    1. Hi Diana,

So delicious! The oats made them feel wholesome, loved the touch of salt from the pretzels but they are still choc chip cookies.

My kind of cookie- chock full of yummy things, think, chewy with lots of texture. Distinct oat taste. I may add more M&Ms and pretzels next time for even more chocolate and salty flavor. Good tip to add a couple M&Ms at the very end because those are more visible.

My cookies seem flat. Maybe because I am at a lower altitude I should have used more flour. They taste good, but maybe I was expecting something richer.

    1. Hi Katie,
Was there anything you may have adjusted? You can always pop them in the fridge to prevent the spreading. I hope this helps for next time! xTieghan

These are delicious! I made them for a Christmas party and they were flying off the table. My first batch was a little too brown on the bottom so my second batch I reduced the baking time slightly and only let them cool 2 minutes or so on the baking sheet before moving to a cooling rack.

This is an objectively good recipe. monster cookies are great because you can add your own flair. I followed the recipe but also added some crushed up candy cane Hershey’s kisses for extra Christmas flair. I weighed my ingredients per usual, and had no issue. Perfectly golden edges and chewy interior! Love them!

  42. Mini pretzel sticks…is it 1 cup before or after crushed? Crushed to a powder or roughly crushed? Also, if you’re crushing them, why do they have to be mini?
Hope that doesn’t come off rude, I’m actually seriously asking. 😬

    1. Hi Christa,
You will want to use 1 cup of pretzels and then crush them, just roughly crushed, you still want pieces of the pretzels. I hope you love the recipe! xTieghan

These cookies are going to be my new favorite cookie. The variety of textures and delicious flavors are pure perfection.
I can’t wait to share them with others in my boxes of cookies. Another win, Tieghan!

Hi! Merry Christmas! I just made a half-batch of these using GF flour (King Arthur’s 1:1). They are fantastic, would give you 10 stars if I could. I didn’t have GF pretzels on hand and decided to bake these at 6am so I substituted crushed salty potato chips – amazing!

    Hi Teagan,
My daughter is a big fan of yours and has become quite the impressive cook with your recipes! She shared this recipe with me and I had to try it for Christmas this year.
These cookies are amazing! The pretzels add a lot of texture!
I made them 1/2 the size (about 1/8 th of a cup) and followed your instructions fo make them thicker cookies by omitting the egg yolk and I used dark chocolate chunks!
So delicious and they look scrumptious too!

    1. Hey Joey,

I tried these cookies and my entire family absolutely loved them (even my husband who does not like white chocolate!). They will definitely be a family favorite for the holidays. The only problem I had was mixing in the chips and M&Ms; the batter was so heavy and stiff so I ended up using my KitchenAid mixer on the lowest speed and that was fine! I also found that I needed to bake them about 2 minutes longer at the end. (This was the first thing I ever baked in my new oven so I’m not yet tuned into the nuances of how it bakes). Thank you and happy holidays!

    1. Hi Judy,
Thank you so very much for giving this recipe a try, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! Happy Holidays!🎄🎁

      1. Do you chill the dough before? I never do when I make cookies (I don’t have patience!) And since I don’t, I suspect that is why every single time, they turn out like huge thin flat ugly blobs that run into eachother. I used less than 1/4 cup per cookie and that still happened.

        Are you chilling your dough?
How many cookies per sheet tray did you bake at a time? What am I doing wrong?
        Thank you so much!

        1. Hi Sara,
I did not chill the dough, but if you have issues with dough spreading then chilling the dough would help with this. xTieghan

    1. Hi Betty,
Thank you so very much for giving this recipe a try, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! Happy Holidays!🎄🎁

my cookies went flat! not sure what i did wrong but they are totally flat and way too crispy on the ends. next time i make it i’m gonna leave out the egg yolk and chilling the dough- i did that for about half the batch and it helped a little but overall still flat. i want to make them better next time, i was so excited about this recipe!

    1. Hey Shannon,
Thank you so very much for giving this recipe a try, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! Sorry to hear that they were flat. Was there anything you adjusted? Happy Holidays!🎄🎁

    1. Hi Kiren,
I would not recommend that for this recipe:) Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

    1. Hi Mary,

      1. I only have “quick oats” think that’ll do the trick ? I’m too excited to try them and can’t bring myself to make a special trip to the store.

        1. Hi Carleigh,
So sorry, the quick oats will not give you the same results, you really want to use old fashioned oats. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

I love these cookies! The pretzels added a wonderful texture and salty component. I did not end up adding the additional quarter cup of m&ms on top of the cookies and most are still festive looking. Mine also did not spread a ton, but that is totally fine. I could see making these again and experimenting with different flavor combinations. Thanks for another great recipe!

    1. Hi Mary,

Hmm these were way too salty. Is the salted butter a typo? Typically cookie recipes call for unsalted butter. Kosher salt also varies widely is saltiness (Diamond Crystal vs Morton) so sadly these are headed for the trash

      1. These cookies were delicious! I followed the recipe exactly, slightly reduced the brown and granulated sugar and the amount of each treat added in (m&m, chocolate chips). Unfortunately mine did not spread out. Maybe because I reduced the treats. Also I used large flake rolled oats, as I didn’t have Old fashioned on had. They were still delicious.

        1. Hi Valerie,
Happy Holidays! Thank you so much for making this recipe, I love to hear that it was enjoyed!🎄🎁 xTieghan

I have made these multiple times and always a hit. I have subbed for mint MMS and right now I have a batch with caramel added in!

    1. Hi Wendie,

  52. I am so excited to make these! I only have unsalted butter tho… are there any adjustments I need to make? Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Kelly,
I would just add 1/4 teaspoon of salt. I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try. Happy Holidays! xTieghan

I am excited to make this recipe as it looks tremendous, but there is a glaring error in the recipe. I did not read all of the comments, but you have the baker make almost 4 cups of mix-ins (chips, pretzels, etc.) and then say to use 1 cup in the cookie batter. Then sprinkle a few M&Ms on the cookies half way through baking. What do you do with the rest of the mix-ins? I did see people say they cut back on the mix-ins. Maybe they were adding all 3 3/4 cups of mix-ins to the dough?

    1. Hi John,
There is no error in the recipe. You are going to mix 1 cup of M&M’s, 1 cup of chocolate chips, 1 cup of pretzels, 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips into the batter and then top the cookies with the remaining 1/4 cup of M&M’s. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

      1. I personally mixed everything in a small batter bowl then added it to the dough. I just forgot to set aside the 1/4 of m&ms. Not too big of a deal though- some to remember for next year! Will definitely be making these again.

    2. 4 stars
I noticed this as well! That is an error in the recipe directions and is confusing. Please fix. Thanks for clearing that up.

    1. Hi Audrey,
You could do either one:) Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it. Happy Holidays! xT

My daughter and I made these tonight and they were absolutely delicious!! As we are in the final steps she goes, “Mom, chocolate chips and M&M’s? That’s crazy!” 🙂 It seemed like a ton of add ins, but boy are these cookies good! We couldn’t find pretzels at the store, so we substituted chopped pecans to add a little crunch. They turned out very yummy! Thanks for a fantastic recipe!

    1. Hey Katie,

  58. Going to try these for Christmas Eve. Are old fashioned oats the same as rolled oats? And do not use the quick cook ones, correct? Thanks!

    1. Hi Kate,
Yes, those are the same, just don’t use quick oats. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

Made these tonight and we are obsessed! Family loves them! Sweet and salty yum. Made a couple of small tweaks – used Cup4Cup gluten free flour and coconut sugar in place of the white sugar and they came out SO good. New fav – all year round.

OMG OMG! Hands down the best chocolate chip cookie recipe I have ever made. They are high end bakery status that you would pay $7 for!! I adapted a bit and left out the m&ms (I know that’s a little lame, but don’t love that candy in cookies) and swapped in macadamia nuts. I used dark chocolate chunks and sprinkled in some white chocolate like the recipe. Highly recommend chunks to make these ultra decadent. I also put in a dash of almond extract since I love that flavor! So much you can do with this recipe and it’s a keeper that would impress friends, family, or to make just for yourself 🙂

    1. 5 stars
Also forgot to point out I left out the pretzels !! You really don’t need all those extra toppings – the recipe is soooo good and I think chocolate and nuts add all the extra pop you need! Otherwise it’s a bit rich for my taste

    2. Hi Lauren,
Awesome! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it. Thanks so much for your kind message. Happy Holidays!❄️ xT

  68. I loved the idea of these cookies, and they are very tasty as the recipe is written, but very sweet and spread a lot with all the add-ins. Next time I will be reducing the amount of semi sweet chocolate to half and skipping the white chocolate chips. I just want more cookie than chocolate. Also please note that if you are baking with a dark nonstick pan, reduce the initial cooking time by 2-3 minutes. So cook for 7 minutes, then 1-2, then 1-2. Per cooking directions, cookies on stainless pan were perfect but cookies on dark nonstick are overdone, no matter what rack they were on in the oven (cooking at 350 convect).

    1. Hi Stephanie,
No adjustments are needed, you can follow the recipe as is. Please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  69. Made these along with other HBH cookies for a holiday gift for work friends & they came out great! I did halve the chocolate chips, white chocolate, and M&Ms as I thought it was maybe too much in the dough, but otherwise I did exactly as directed.

    1. Hi Meg,
Awesome! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it. Happy Holidays!❄️ xT

I tested this recipe in advance of possibly making them for Christmas Eve with my in-laws but these were far too sweet for my taste unfortunately! Next time I’d use ~half of the add-ins and instead of semi-sweet baking chips I’d probably use a dark chocolate bar and crumble it up, and just add the m&m’s on top for decoration. The idea is lovely and the pretzels add a really nice touch!! I could’ve certainly used more pretzels! I’m just too picky about sweetness 🙂

The parchment paper is key for not having burnt bottoms due to M&M’s, even if using a nonstick cookie sheet. Took me a round to figure that out!

  71. 5 stars
These are super easy & delicious!! I made half with pretzels and half without, and liked the batch without pretzels better. I felt like the pretzels were a little soggy (brand new bag)…but maybe I crunched them wrong or something? Next time I might try with coconut flakes for an added crunch vs the pretzels, but even without they’re great!

    1. Hey Andrea,
Awesome! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it. Did you crunch them too much? Happy Holidays!❄️ xT

These cookies exceeded my expectations. They are absolutely delicious! Totally worth the crazy long grocery store line and the time it took to hand-sort red and green M&M’s (because the holiday bags were nowhere to be found). I used dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet and butterscotch chips instead of white chocolate chips. Otherwise I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out perfect! These will now be an annual Christmas cookie staple. Thank you for another fabulous recipe Tieghan!

The cookies themselves after cooking were pretty good, but the DOUGH of this batter is amazing. I would honestly prefer to just make the dough (egg and flour safe) and serve that with dipping pretzels. I couldn’t get enough of it. Also, I used mini Christmas m&ms instead of the regular sized and I think the texture is really nice that way.

    1. Hey Athena,

My cookies spread so much and the pretzel pieces tasted stale after baking. So bummed they didn’t turn out anything like the photo 🙁

    1. Hey Katie,
So sorry to hear this. Was there anything you adjusted in the recipe? Let me know how I can help! xTieghan

        1. Unfortunately, that could have been the issue. Next time, you could pop the dough in the fridge to prevent the spreading.

    2. I just made my mix and the dough is way too sticky/wet to even roll. I am putting in the fridge to see if getting it chilled will help. I followed the recipe exactly, just ommitted the white choc since we don’t like that. Wonder if I should add more flour? Worried about them spreading too thin and burning… will update!

      1. Hi Jennifer,
I would not add more flour. I mean, it should be pretty sticky like a classic chocolate chip cookie dough. xTieghan

  76. Hello H.B.C.
Made these today & switched up the recipe just slightly. Added dark chocolate chips instead of the white. Accidentally bought mini semi sweet instead of regular. These cookies turned a none oat eating kid into an oat lover! Great recipe. They hit the spot & are quite pretty to look at, loving all the textures & speckled green & red candies.
P.S. I have turned your Pumpkin Beer Pretzels with Queso into a fall tradition. This past October makes 4 years. They are so beautiful & tasty! I pass along the recipe each time they are made.
Christmas hugs from the “Mitten” (mi.). Steph

Just finished baking a batch of these for gifts and they turned out perfectly! I ended up forgetting the white chocolate chips, so I substituted additional semi-sweet chips, and I also forgot to hold back some M&Ms, so they were all baked in. Perfect balance of sweet and salty and the oats give the texture a little something extra. Thank you!

      1. Quick question, is this recipe set for those baking at a specific altitude? I’m at around 5,000 feet so I usually have to adjust.

I followed the recipe completely and mine spread out so thin like pancakes and basically melted into eachother 🙁 Im so sad! I love your recipes and thought this would be super easy. I have no idea where I went wrong…I doubt it’s the recipes fault….surely a user problem somewhere. Im still sad – I was counting on using these in giveaway boxes. Please come to my house and make a batch for me!! LOL They seemed to work for others…I feel like I just wasted a bunch of yummy ingredients…the dough tastes delicious though 😉

    1. Mine were thin as pancakes too! I have new baking soda and baking powder. I thought maybe my butter was too warm?? So I put the second batch in the fridge to cook for about 30 minutes and they still spread. I’ve never had a cookie do this before.

      1. Hey Heather,
So sorry to hear this. Was there anything you adjusted in the recipe? What kind of oats did you use? xTieghan

I made these today and we all love them. I didn’t have most of the add ins listed here but used some semi sweet chocolate chips and a bag of festive vanilla flavored chipits. Made a batch this morning for my daughter to bring to work tomorrow for her and her co-workers; she works in a hospital. They were super easy to bring together. Thought the 1/4 cup amount of batter would be too big but definitely not! They look so festive and they sure are ‘monster’! They are delicious and I will be definitely making them again! Happy Holidays! 🎄

Had so much fun making these with my 4 year old! I used peanut butter chips instead of white chocolate. Turned out amazing! Love all your recipes.

  89. 5 stars
These were easy and delicious! Since it was my first time making them I did follow the recipe exactly except that 1/4 a cup of dough per cookie seemed like a huge cookie, so I just used my medium cookie scoop, which gave me four dozen total. I thought I might need to reduce the cooking time with the smaller sized cookies, but the original cooking time ended up working perfectly for them. The “allowing them to cool completely on the cookie sheet” step is important, if you try to take them off earlier they basically fall apart, so let them cool and they will set up perfectly. Next time I do this I might replace the semi-sweet chocolate chips with dark chocolate and I might switch out the white chocolate with butterscotch chips. I’m considering maybe adding pecans or walnuts, but that might be too much going on in one cookie! Thanks for the great recipe!

  90. These are very tasty! I put my oats in a food processor first so the cookies maintained the oat flavor but turned out not quite as chewy.

    1. Hey Jordan,
Wonderful! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for giving it a try! Happy Holidays! xTieghan

This is THE best MonsterCookie recipe and I’ve tried others. Perfect texture. I had to use mini Christmas M&M’s because that’s all I could find( Thank you Supply Chain Issues:-( )
But they turned out great and still very pretty and festive.

    1. Hey Eileen,
Wonderful! I love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for giving it a try! Happy Holidays! xTieghan

  92. Can I add some chopped caramel pieces to the batter, perhaps in place of the white choco chips? If so, how much should I add?

    Can’t wait to bake these:)

    Thank you!

  93. Mine turn out like a ball and quite puffy – no spread or gooey-ness even though I reduced cooking time. Could it be bc I used quick cook oats? Yummy all the same 🙂

      1. Thank you for responding! I will try again! They were delish anyway but super dense. Silly me, getting the wrong oats! 😜 I knew it was me bc all your recipes are awesome 👏

  94. Hi there!

I love all your recipes and have been inspired by the brown butter chocolate chip cookies in particular. Do you think I could use brown butter in this one as well? Or will it mess up the baking process?

    Thank you!

I loved this recipe! I made these for a holiday party and they were a hit. I made them slightly smaller. I got 31 cookies from this recipe. I reduced the bake time a bit since I made them smaller.

I was a little skeptical because of the baking powder but they are seriously perfect. I’ll be making these again! Thanks for a great recipe.

  98. Took these to a Christmas party and they were a hit! I refrigerated the dough overnight and the M&Ms didn’t melt while baking like some others mentioned – maybe refrigerating the dough helps? I don’t like white chocolate so I left that out and they were still really good!

These are so yummy! A bit hard to mix towards the end when you put in the oats, chips, pretzels, and m&ms, but you just have to use a little elbow grease ;). They definitely will expand a LOT while baking so be sure to give them plenty of space on the baking sheet. A couple of mine came out pancake like but for the most part they all came out great! And the pancake ones still taste good, lol! Thanks for a yummy and fun holiday cookie recipe.

These were great! Loved them even more the days after baking them. Hey, do you think I could brown the butter in step one? Would it add to it?

    1. Hey Caitlin,
Thanks so much for trying this recipe out, I am thrilled to hear that it was enjoyed. Sure, you could do that. Happy Holidays! xTieghan

I made these for my version of a Cookie Box. They were a hit! Each batch came out perfectly. This will be a cookie I make every year.

I just baked them for the first time and they are HUGE, “monster” cookies. I baked 6 on a cookie sheet and popped 2 sheets in the oven following your directions. After letting them cool on the sheet so the set, I moved them to the rack and added 6 more to cookies to the 2 sheets. They came out perfect. Crisp edges and gooey centers. They look so festive. Will make again for sure. Thanks Tieghan, they will impress my kids. xoxo Happy Holidays.

I am gluten free and used an all purpose GF flour to make these!! They are wonderful!!! Next time I think I will skip on the GF pretzels. These cookies are absolutely decadent and I cannot wait to make again!!!

We made these cookies (4 of them) and they were delicious!!! We froze the remaining dough – and have struggled to get the bake time and texture right…Have you frozen these before – and if so how do you modify bake time? Convection or regular bake?
    Thanks so much !!!

    1. Hi Chris,
Happy Sunday! So glad to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks for making it! Sorry, I have not frozen these before and I always use regular bake. xTieghan

    1. Hey Megan,
Sure, these should work well as bars! Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

  108. AMAZING! They were so easy and turn out so pretty! Question- if I wanted to add peanut butter, would I put in less flour or just add an extra egg to make sure they don’t get too dry?

  109. 5 stars
These cookies were so easy to make and such a hit with everyone at a Christmas party! The recipe was easy to follow! I did make smaller cookies so had to run out to buy more M&M’s to place on top as the first bag wasn’t enough but, who doesn’t love more M&M’s?! Thank you for another wonderful recipe!!

  110. 5 stars
They were super easy and really delicious! I forgot the pretzels when making them, even after I already went to the store to get them😢 Either way, they were great!

      1. Do these hold up in the freezer? Want to make them for my cookie boxes and need to figure out which recipes I can bake, then freeze over the next few days.

        1. Hey Holly,
Yes, totally okay to pop these in the freezer. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love them! xTieghan

    Hi Tieghan,

I made this with GF flour and GF pretzels (utz brand). I am not sure why, but I think some of the interior pretzels taste hard and chewy. Any ideas why that might be? Thanks for your tips! I will try it again soon.

    1. Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try. Sorry, I am confused how they are hard and chewy? I feel like they should really just be hard, like a pretzel. xTieghan

  112. 5 stars
These are as easy to make as advertised. I, too, like to add a new cookie to my rotation each year, and this one is a winner. I omitted the egg yolk, as I like my cookies a little thicker. And I used chocolate chips instead of chunks, because that’s what I had. They are delicious. I may keep these in the rotation!

    1. Hey Adrienne,
Awesome!! I am so glad to hear this recipe was enjoyed, thanks for making it! Have the best weekend! xTieghan

I made this with 1:1 gluten-free flour, gluten-free pretzels and sprouted oats, and it turned out great! Can’t even tell! 🙂 great recipe!

    1. Hey Janet,
Happy Friday! I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks so much for giving it a try! xTieghan

    1. Hey AnneMarie,
Yes, you can skip the oats. Please let me know if you give the cookies a try, I hope you love them! xTieghan

  114. IF you want to make these cookies in advance before your event. Would you recommend freezing the dough, then bake the day of ? Or better to bake them and then freeze? Excited to make these!

    1. Hey Kelsea,
I would freeze the dough and then bake the day of. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

Loved this recipe! I accidentally used 2 eggs + 1 egg white (instead of 1 yolk) and the cookies turned out flat and crunchy (similar to Tates) after just 8 or 9 minutes. I actually LOVE them like this but they do not look the cutest so I’ll keep this batch for us and try again for the ones I give to the neighbors 🙂

    1. Hey Kelly,
Happy Friday! I love to hear that this recipe was a winner, thanks so much for giving it a try! xTieghan

  116. Hi there! Quick question…in the write up before the recipe, you mention pretzel twists and in the recipe it says pretzel sticks. Does it matter which ones we use? Can’t wait to try this recipe out!
    Thanks a mil!

    1. Hey Mandi,
Either one will work just fine! Please let me know if you give the cookies a try, I hope you love them! xTieghan

I made this recipe this morning to ship to my daughter at college for her finals week. Oh my, they are so delicious! I had to bake them a little longer to get the browned edges, but other than that this recipe is terrific!

    1. Hey Kathleen,
Awesome!! Thanks a bunch for making this recipe, I am so glad to hear that it was enjoyed! xTieghan

  118. Just took my first batch out, I had to put them in for a bit longer, as they are not browning like the picture, and the M&M’s are melting 😭
I made them because they not only sounded yummy, but because of the photo looking so nice.

If anyone has any tips on how to brown the cookie, or why my M&M’s are melting, a reply would be so appreciated.

    Kimberly

    1. Hi Kimberly,
I would follow the recipe as is:) The cookies will continue to bake on the baking sheet when you pull from the oven. Your M&Ms will melt, that’s why I add a couple on top in step 5. I hope this helps! xTieghan

    1. Hi Jodi,
Yes, that would work for you. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you enjoy them! xTieghan

I did not have pretezels, but tossed in some coconut they were great

I have a question for anyone who froze dough into pre shaped balls (which I am doing now) – did the bake time change at all when bakingfrom frozen? Teighan, help me out! 🙂 Thanks for always replying to my questions!

    1. Hey Angie,
Awesome!! Thanks a bunch for making this recipe, I am so glad to hear that it was enjoyed! I’ve never baked from frozen, I would thaw first:) xTieghan

    1. Hey Alexandra,

    Hi Tieghan,
I just took the last of this cookie out of the oven. I tasted one and they are delicious. I left out the extra yolk since I didn’t want them to spread out more. I also wanted smaller cookies and more of them. My batch made 40. I think they would be awesome with a drizzle of melted chocolate chips after cooling. Nothing is too sweet or chocolatey to me. I used a cool cookie sheet with parchment for each batch in the oven. I used my kitchenAid mixer for these but I was unclear if that was right since the recipe just said mix together. Thank you.

    1. Hey Sandy,
Awesome!! Thanks a bunch for making this recipe, I am so glad to hear that it was enjoyed! xTieghan

  121. Hello, I was going to double the recipe and I changed the number before I printed, but the egg yolk did change. Do I need to add another? Thanks

    1. Hi there,
Yes, I would add another egg yolk. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know how they turn out! xTieghan

  122. 5 stars
I made these and used browned butter (which might have been a mistake because I didn’t realize that browned butter brought back to room temp was different than just room temp butter) but they still turned out delicious. I also used peanut butter m&ms instead of regular m&ms because I felt like the chocolate chunks added enough chocolate and the peanut butter was a really tasty addition to the flavor profile

  123. 5 stars
The bomb! Followed the recipe but only baked 4. The rest of the scoops of dough are in the freezer so I can pop them in the oven whenever and we can have them warm.

    1. Hi Susy,
Sure, that will work well for you! Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

  124. Can’t wait to make these: question: how “crushed” should the pretzels be? Pieces still apparent to give some crunch, or dust? Thanks!

    1. Hey Martha,
You’ll want to crush just slightly so you still have pieces of the pretzel for taste and crunch. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  125. Caution!! These are so addicting! I think I found my new favorite cookie.. I omitted the white chocolate chips ( they are just too sweet for me) and cut the oats in half- but so so good!!

  126. I made these for a Christmas party and they were seriously delicious. Chewy, gooey, crispy, crunchy, and oh so chocolatey all at the same time. This was one of my first times baking cookies from scratch so I was a little nervous but they turned out exactly like the photo. I followed the recipe exactly and ended up with closer to 30 cookies vs. 20. I figured I would have leftovers but they were completely gone by the end of the party because everyone loved them so much.

    1. Hi Maddie,
Yes, that would be just fine for you to do. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

Love add-in everything cookies and great idea for Xmas to empty the baking store! Followed the recipe (including the extra egg for ‘spread’) but unfortunately these turned out too cakey and thick for me. I prefer cookies that spread with a crunchy outside and gooey centre (as in your pictures)! Not sure why mine weren’t like that….

    1. Hey Tiffany,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try, these really aren’t meant to be a flat cookie, maybe you got the wrong impression? xTieghan

  128. These are amazing! They are the perfect combination of salty and sweet. These are going to be my new favorite Christmas cookie for gifting and cookie swaps.

  129. 5 stars
So delicious! These made it in the top 5 for me so they were in the Christmas gift boxes I delivered this year!

  130. This recipe was amazing! I did not include the oats and they still turned out delicious! This will be a new cookie for me to make every year going forward!

  131. These look amazing! When mixing the butter, sugars and vanilla….are you creaming them or just blending until mixed? I’m in the middle of a bad streak of not properly creaming butter and sugar and ending up with flat cookies 🙁 Hoping this recipes gets me back on my game!

    1. Hey Kelly,
You are beating until combined. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

  132. Question – one cup EACH of the mix ins? I’m guessing so but I read it as one cup total 🙁

    Still a great cookie!!

    1. Hi Allie,
Yes, the recipe calls for 1 cup of M&Ms plus 1/4 cup for toppings, 1 cup of chocolate chips, 1 cup of pretzels, and 1/2 cups of white chocolate chips. Not sure where the 1 cups total came from:) Thanks for giving the recipe a try! xTieghan

  133. 5 stars
Easy to follow and delicious! My husband liked these so much that he said they might have usurped his favorite— Tollhouse!

    1. Hey Heather,
I would add 1/4 teaspoon of salt. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

Just pulling these out of the oven! OMG. I used Cup4Cup GF flour, GF oats and GF pretzel sticks. When I was putting the dough together I was certain I would get more than 20 cookies but using a quarter cup ice cream scoop 20 was almost spot on. I might end up with 22. I sprinkled a little bit of sea salt on top when they came out of the oven. The only other change I made was to chill my dough for about 30 minutes before baking which I find is essential when using gf flour, not so much to retain shape as to temper the spreading out of the cookies as they bake. Don’t omit the step of adding a few M&M’s near the end of the baking! They taste amazing!

      1. Yes, Lori. I always use C4C and replace it exactly as called for. On occasion I also use King Arthur GF flour and also replace that exactly as called for. These cookies really spread out which I know is in part due to the lack of gluten but also the recipe itself. Good luck if you make them!

      2. One last note. I used glutano gf pretzel rods and broke them into about thirds. They sort of disappeared in the cooking so I didn’t appreciate the addition. Not sure what I would do next time as I think they would be a nice addition!

    1. Hey Cari,
Fantastic! Thanks so much for making this recipe, I am so glad it was enjoyed! Thanks for sharing what worked well for you.❄️ xTieghan

  142. these look amazing. curious if these are good to make ahead, then freeze the 1/4c balls. How should I adjust the temp/time if pulling from the freezer to make “hot and fresh” as needed??

    1. Hey Aimee,
Sure, you could definitely freeze these, I would thaw and bake as instructed:) I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  143. All good! My boys loved helping me make these. Used butterscotch instead of white chocolate and they turned out amazing! Thanks for sharing 😊

I’ve had the idea of sending a package with ingredients, aprons, etc. to my nieces and nephew, then having a Zoom baking date with them for Christmas. I’ve been searching for the perfect recipe for it and this is the winner! The dough comes together super fast and the cookies are DELICIOUS!! I put the extra m&m’s on top of the dough before putting them in the oven (instead of taking them out and putting them in before rotating the pan) and it worked like a charm. Highly recommend this recipe!!

    1. Hi Barbara,

  146. Hi! My wife and I are excited to try this recipe. However, we noticed and oddity in the recipe. It calls for 3 3/4 cups total of pretzel pieces, m&ms, and chocolate chips. Then in the directions, you only use a cup of the mixture. What do you do with the rest?

    1. She means add 1 cup of M&Ms out of the 1 1/4 cups called for (you will use the remaining 1/4 cup to add towards the end), then ALL the pretzels, ALL the chocolate chips, and ALL the white chocolate chips.

        1. Hi Lequone,
Wonderful! Love to hear that this recipe was a hit, thanks for making it! Have the best week:) xTieghan

    2. Hi Mike,
Sorry for any confusion, I think you are reading the instructions wrong. You will want to fold in 1 cup of the M&M’s and use the remaining 1/4 cup for the tops of the cookies. Please follow the measurements for the pretzels and chocolate chips. I hope this makes sense! xTieghan

I love how these turned out. I let them set out (partially covered) overnight and they were the perfect soft/chewy cookie the next morning!

I made these yesterday and they are fantastic! Since I didn’t have any white chocolate chips on hand, I swapped them with Trader Joe’s Salted Caramel chips. Oh, so yummy! Looking forward to serving these cookies, along with the Puff Pastry Wrapped Cranberry Brie and the Tomato Vodka Pizza today at our annual Nog & ‘Nosh party!

Super yummy. We loved them, I might make them a single cookie scoop moving forward.

I did a quick google search, but couldn’t find your suggestions for freezing cookies. Would love to know your suggestions. As a kid I put them in my attic (below 40 in Chicago.) I haven’t made a huge quantity in years. ??

What a delicious dough! All the add-ins are yummy, but the dough itself is great! Followed the recipe as is, till the end– I sprinkled a little kosher salt on top when I added the M&Ms 🙂

  152. We have a peanut and tree nut allergy in our house so I was excited to see a monster cookie recipe that is perfect for us without having to alter it as some monster cookies have peanut butter. We followed the recipe exactly and they were delicious. The pretzel pieces were a great addition. 😋

Lovely recipe, came out fantastic. With multiple little ones to worry about I did half whole wheat flour and coconut sugar instead of the refined. We passed the red and green m&Ms into the top of our scooped dough before putting into oven and they came out perfect… so saved a step messing with the hot cookie sheet to do it later. delicious and unique with the pretzel crunch!

Delicious mix. We loved the sweet and salty balance. My batch didn’t turn out quite as crispy and golden and beautiful; mine are light cookie, quite soft all around, slightly stiff on the exterior. Still delicious!

    1. Hi Amanda,
Sorry, for this recipe you will want to use the old fashioned oats. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  156. What would you recommend for someone with an egg allergy? I typically use an egg substitute when I bake, would that work in this recipe?

    1. Hey there,
I haven’t tested an egg substitute, but it should be okay to use! Let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

Very good. My nephew said they were missing raisins! I did change one thing, I left out the M&Ms and added cut up fresh raspberries. I made some thing similar last year and they were a big hit. I’d like them but I don’t love them. Truth be told I don’t think I really like oatmeal cookies that much. I wanted them not to be overly sweet.

    1. Hey Shelly,
Awesome! It’s so great to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Have the best weekend❄️ xTieghan

  158. Hi! Do you have any recommendation on an alternative to the oats? Monster cookies are my absolute favorite type of cookie, but I haven’t been able to eat them in the last few years since I’ve developed an oat allergy.

    1. Hey Brooke,
You can skip the oats in this recipe. Please let me know if you give the cookies a try, I hope you love them! xTieghan

    1. Hey Stefanie,
Yes, that will work well for you. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

    1. Hey Serena,
You can use an equal amount of GF flour, but I would not recommend using coconut sugar. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

    1. Like you I want to add peanut butter. I’m going to try adding peanut butter chips instead of white chocolate chips.

    2. Hey Joey,
I would use Reese’s Pieces in place of the M&M’s to give that peanut butter flavor. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

    3. I made these last night: omitted the 1/2 cup of white sugar, used 2 eggs (no yolk) and added 1/4 cup peanut butter. Worked perfectly! Also, used 1:1 gluten free flour 🙂

      1. Hey Nancy,
Wonderful! Love to hear that this recipe was a hit, thanks for making it! Have the best week:) xTieghan

Made one batch, only had regular choc chips and regular and mint m&ms. Husband and son said ‘delicious’! I couldn’t stop thinking about adding coconut, made another batch adding 1+ cup coconut with the crushed pretzels- for me that made these a huge hit! Thanks for the fun and colorful recipie!

    1. Hey Allie,
Sorry, I have never added peanut butter to this recipe. Please let me know if you give it a try, I hope you love the cookies! xTieghan

    1. I have a similar recipe, and I have had success freezing the dough balls. I do let them thaw slightly on the pan while I preheat the oven. It’s so convenient to have them on hand to bake fresh!

    2. Hey Andy,

  161. Interesting recipe! Monster cookies have been hugely popular in our area (North Dakota) for decades and there is no flour in them!

  162. Just made them today. They are delicious!! I made smaller balls so we’d have more cookies, same amount of time to bake.

    1. Hey Joy,
Awesome! It’s so great to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Have the best weekend❄️ xTieghan

  163. 5 stars
This is a Christmas cookie keeper. Made them today…super yummy! I’m sure they’ll be even better tomorrow.

    1. Hey Kristen,

  164. Just made these and they are delicious! I used more chocolate chips, no white chocolate, and M & M Peanuts because I didn’t realize they weren’t the original until I was home! I also food processed the oats which is a nice texture. And none of it changed the fact they are so good!

    1. Hey there,
Awesome! It’s so great to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Have the best weekend❄️ xTieghan

  165. This sounds like a great cookie. I’ve seen some recipes that instruct to put old fashion oats in food processor. While I know you don’t say it in recipe, have you tried or would you recommend doing that?

    1. Hey Nicole,
I’ve never tried that:) My guess would be if you wanted to do that you would have to reduce the flour, maybe just follow the instructions as is for this one since I haven’t tested it! Please let me know if you give the recipe a try! xTieghan

  166. I really don’t like white chocolate – is there something I could substitute? like more chocolate chips? without compromising the end result? I know that white chocolate seems to be more melty . . .

    1. Hey there,
Totally, just use more regular chocolate chips:) Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

  167. These cookies look amazing – I can’t wait to try them! And also … where did you get that adorable rubber spatula?? It is too cute!

    1. Thanks so much Becky! The spatula is from Williams Sonoma! Let me know if you give the recipe a try:) xTieghan

    1. I wouldn’t swap flour for almond flour. If you’re trying to go GF with these you should use bobs red mill 1:1 GF flour or King Arthur’s. Also, oats are not gluten free unless you purchase the certified GF ones, it will say it right on the package. Bob’s red mill has certified GF oats, although not all folks with celiac like myself can eat GF oats.

    2. Hi Maddie,
I would recommend using an equal amount of GF flour. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

        1. Hi Becky,
Totally fine to use unsalted butter, I would just add 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Please let me know if you give the recipe a try, I hope you love it! xTieghan

    1. Hey Karen,
Sure, that would be a super cute idea! Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  168. Just want to make sure 2 tsp. baking soda and 2 tsp. baking powder is correct??? Seems like a lot for 2 cups of flour. I love oatmeal in cookies.

    1. Hey Charlotte,
Yes, all measurements are correct, you can follow the recipe as written:) Please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  169. Yum! Loving all your Christmas recipes! When are you sharing your main cookie box post this year? Looking forward to it! Xx
