Pastry Wrapped Baked Brie with Maple Roasted Apples, a simple, yummy, holiday appetizer we can all make and enjoy! Store-bought puff pastry wrapped around creamy brie cheese with apple butter (or use fig preserves). Then bake until the pastry is golden and the brie is warm and melted. Top this flaky pastry with sweet, buttery maple-roasted apples. They’re so delicious over the melty wheel of brie. SO MUCH YUMMINESS – always a favorite at holiday parties!

I was trying to figure out just what recipes to share on these final days leading up to Thanksgiving. I wasn’t sure what type of recipes you all might need most this week. Is it more Thanksgiving recipes, quick appetizers, or desserts?

I have ideas for them all. It’s the time of year when my mind never quiets. I’m always thinking of what to make. So many good recipes to share! I decided that easy dinners were an absolute must (yesterday’s yummy ramen). Then one appetizer, because we all need last-minute appetizers (today’s brie). And for tomorrow, well I just couldn’t wait anymore so we’ll be jumping into Christmas.

It’s time for Christmas cookies!

But today we’ve got pastry-wrapped baked brie. I serve some variation at every Thanksgiving and Christmas gathering. It’s my family’s favorite, and always the easiest to prepare.

This recipe is one I’ve had on rotation since 2017. It’s such an easy way to prepare brie and the maple butter roasted apples really make it so delish. I know you’re going to love this recipe!

Step 1: roast the apples

I love to use Honeycrisp apples. Thinly slice them and toss them with salted butter and maple syrup. Then, roast them up in the oven until they begin to caramelize in the maple. They’re really delicious and your kitchen will smell wonderful too!

If you don’t love apples, I recommend making my cranberry brie instead.

Step 2: assemble the brie

One thing my Nonnie taught me, was that appetizers are best when they’re simple. Therefore, store-bought puff pastry is a must. Especially during the busy holidays.

Unwrap the brie, then sit it on top of the pastry. Top the brie with the apple butter. Or mix the apple butter with fig preserves (this is what I do and what we love most), Then wrap the brie up tight inside the pastry dough.

Step 3: bake

Now, brush the pastry with a beaten egg and add a sprinkle of coarse sugar. This step isn’t needed, but it makes the pastry really sparkle. It’s fun for the holidays and makes the flaky pastry extra delicious.

Throw the brie in the oven, and wait for the apples to finish up and the brie to bake.

When the brie comes out of the oven, serve it immediately topped with the maple apples and any sauce left in the pan. You can enjoy this with your favorite crackers or toasted bread. It’s hard to describe just how good this really is. But if you love apples and you love brie, you must make this. It’s classic but turned up a notch, and it really is roll-your-eyes-back GOOD.

Promise, this will be the favorite appetizer of the night! If you want to add a pop of red, try a few pomegranate arils. That would be so pretty!

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 425° F.
    2. In a baking dish, combine the apples, butter, and maple syrup. Transfer to the oven and roast for 25 minutes, until soft and caramelized.
    3. Layer the puff pastry flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place the brie in the center of the pastry and remove a little of the rind from the top of the brie. I leave the rind on the bottom and sides intact. Spread the apple butter/fig preserves over top. Fold the corners of the pastry over the brie. Brush the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle lightly with coarse sugar.
    4. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is deep golden brown.
    5. Spoon the roasted apples over the brie. Top with thyme. Enjoy with your favorite crackers or just with a spoon. YUM!

  1. Could I technically throw the apples in the same dish as the brie pastry dish or is there a reason you cooked them separately?

I made this for a girls brunch event and it was a huge hit! Would totally make it again, and it took maybe 10 minutes of prep. It was so impressive for the time invested.

    1. Hey Allissa,

So easy to make. Thru it together and put it in my giant toaster oven. I didn’t have thyme so i put rosemary on it for garnish. AMAZING! will definitely make it again. i served it with crackers but i ate it all by itself, yes YUM is the word.
It was also a beautiful presentation. I would add a picture but i don’t see how i can. So take my word for it!

    1. Hey Linda,

Made this one tonight with a big bowl of salad as a main dish for dinner! And I used my homemade quince&ginger jelly for it instead of the fig jam/apple butter combo! Super delightful 🫶🏼

    1. Hey there,
Thanks for making this recipe and your comment, so glad it was enjoyed! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! xx

    1. Hi Elizabeth,
Just lay the puff pastry on the parchment lined baking sheet. Please let me know if you give this recipe a try, I hope you love it! xT

        1. Sorry, I am not sure what you mean, there are no layers:) If you checkout the photos above, you simply put the brie in the middle of the pastry, then add the apple butter, and then the apples. I hope this helps! xT

          1. Step 3 – refers to layering the puff pastry. Maybe just an issue of verbiage , but it is not clear.

  5. Would love to bring this to work for a potluck. Any suggestion on how to keep it warm? Was thinking of my slow cooker on the warm setting?

  6. Hi! Question about the rind on the cheese. My friend always makes a version of this and as I love the idea as I dug in with my cracker I kept getting bits of waxy rind and it just really turned me off. Can we remove the whole rind or will that cause the cheese to be too runny? Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Anna,
Sure, you could remove the rind, that will be okay for you to do! Please let me know if you have any other questions! Happy Thanksgiving! xT

  7. I’ve been following a while and love this recipe! I know when I used to make this, you recommended to make it with Land o Lakes butter. Is there a particular reason you no longer partner with them? Just wondering, thanks!

    1. Hey Michelle,
Thanks for making this recipe! No specific reason:) You can use your favorite butter in this recipe! Happy Thanksgiving! xT

  8. Hi Tieghan,
I also have the same question as Thomas (below) about the sheets of puff pastry sheets.
Also figuring I could just cook the apples in a cast iron on the stovetop, rather than the oven?

Thank you! Your recipes will be well represented at our house this Thanksgiving!

    1. Hey Laura,
It is just one pastry sheet:) Yes, you could totally do the apples on the stove top! Let me know if you have any other questions, I hope you love this recipe! xT

  9. Under ingredients you refer to 1 sheet of puff pastry. Then in directions you say layer the puff pastry. So how many sheets do you actually use for this recipe? And do you brush the pastry sheets with butter which is common when using puff pastry?

    1. Hi Thomas,
You are just using 1 sheet of puff pastry for this recipe, you will lay it on the parchment lined baking sheet. I hope you love this recipe! xx

      1. Thomas, normally Filo dough/pastry sheets are buttered. Puff pastry has a lot of butter in it. Normally you brush with an egg wash before baking Puff pastry.

Super big hit. Used the little petite breakfast brie to make a smaller amount maybe not as gooey. Spread the cheese and apples on ginger thins from Trader Joe’s. Will definitely be bringing to fall events.

    1. Hey Laina,
Awesome!! Thanks so much for making this recipe and sharing your feedback, I am thrilled to hear that it was enjoyed! xx

  11. Hi. How would you store the leftovers of this? In the fridge or on the counter like a pastry? I made too much of it but don’t want to waste it!

    1. Hi there,
I would store the leftovers in the fridge. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan
