Bringing together all the flavor with this Spicy Southern Style Shrimp with Lemon Basil Orzo. Golden seared shrimp in a creamy, spicy sauce that’s truly so delicious. This shrimp is made all in one skillet with fresh herbs, bell peppers, and a squeeze of lemon. It’s simple and quick cooking, yet roll your eyes back GOOD. Serve this skillet shrimp over a simple lemony basil orzo for a quick and easy summer dinner. This dish makes great use of those delicious herbs and garden bell peppers. It’s the 25-minute dinner that everyone will love!

There are two things I really love about summer shrimp recipes. One, shrimp cooks up in no time at all, so it usually makes for a quick and simple summer dinner. And two, shrimp can really take on so many flavor profiles. From spicy Mexican, to herby Italian, and in today’s case a little spicy southern flare.

I’m not sure what brought on the inspiration for this recipe, other than the fact that I knew I had a bag of shrimp in the freezer and needed a quick weeknight dinner. Sometimes the best inspiration really does comes from the ingredients you have on hand.

I remembered this creamy chicken lazone I shared last year. I LOVED that sauce so much. So I kind of based this recipe off of that. I used it for this shrimp with a few new additions and it turned out just delicious.

I love to give you guys simple and complete meals…all in one’s. Because in reality, when I develop recipes, I develop them as I would want to make them. And personally, I don’t want a recipe just for shrimp in a cream sauce. So we’re making a quick basil orzo to serve alongside the shrimp.

Start with the orzo since the shrimp cooks so fast. Simply boil it off and toss it together with olive oil, lots of fresh basil, lemon, and a pinch of salt. Nothing fancy, but I find it to be a nice switch up from say rice, which is often served with shrimp.

While the orzo cooks, make the shrimp

I tossed the shrimp with a mix of spices that’s essentially a homemade cajun seasoning blend. It’s one of my favorite spice mixes to keep on hand for quick meals like this.

Once the shrimp is tossed in the spices, just sear it in a skillet, then add a small pat of butter. Pull the shrimp out of the pan then toss in lots of bell peppers. Add a splash of wine, then some milk to create a creamy sauce. You can use any milk…nut milk, whole milk, or in my case goat milk…all will work.

Finish the sauce off with a small amount of parmesan cheese, then simply slide the shrimp right back in.

Now serve it up

At this point, the orzo should be finished and you can spoon the creamy sauce and shrimp over plates of warm orzo. As with a lot of my summer dishes, I like to top this with plenty of fresh herbs. Today it was basil.

If you’re feeling it, a side of beer bread would go really great with this dinner. It feels very southern and summery to me!

Then if you’re really trying to impress, make a side salad and you’ll have the perfect simple summer dinner. It’s fresh, bright and so delish!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound orzo pasta
  • 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • juice from 1/2 a lemon
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 2 pounds raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1-2 teaspoons cajun seasoning
  • kosher salt and black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • 2 bell peppers, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc
  • 1 cup milk or heavy creamy
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the orzo to al dente, according to package directions. Drain and add it right back to the hot pot. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1/4 cup basil, lemon juice, and season with salt.
    2. Meanwhile, toss the shrimp with 1 tablespoon
olive oil and 1 tablespoon cajun seasoning.
    3. In a large skillet set over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add the shrimp and cook on both sides until seared, about 2-3 minutes per side. Add the butter, then remove the shrimp from the pan.
    4. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil, bell peppers, garlic, and thyme. Cook another 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and pour in the wine. Simmer over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Then add the milk, parmesan, and 2 teaspoons cajun seasoning. Season with salt and pepper. Slide the shrimp into the sauce, simmer 5 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly. Remove from the heat and stir in a handful of basil.
    5. Spoon the orzo onto plates, then spoon the shrimp and sauce over the orzo. Top with fresh basil. Enjoy!

Notes

Homemade Cajun Seasoning: mix 2 1/2 tablespoons smoked paprika, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon dried oregano, 1 tablespoon dried thyme, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper, 1 1/2 tablespoons kosher salt, and 1 tablespoon black pepper. Makes 3/4 cup.

    1. Hey Virginie,
Thanks a bunch for trying out this recipe, I am delighted to hear that it was enjoyed! Have the best day:) xTieghan

  1. I made this last night and it was so delicious. I cook for 3 servings but I only really cut down the shrimp to one pound, the bell pepper to one and the wine and milk. I can’t wait to make this again and next time I will use the full amount of liquids so there will be a bit more sauce. Thank you for the recipe.

  2. 5 stars
Making this AGAIN today for Sunday supper! This is so easy and so delicious I have to force myself not to make it every week so my husband doesn’t get tired of it. Thankfully I have an arsenal of your recipes to keep things interesting!

    1. Hey Elizabeth,
I do not have an exact measurement for one serving. I would say 1/2 cup of orzo and 5-6 shrimp. I hope you love the recipe! xTieghan

  4. oh man, I have been now making your recipes for YEARS. You are a staple in our house! With the shrimp, if you buy it frozen, do you need to alter the recipe at all to account for that? Or defrost it (if so how)? Thank you for essentially feeding our family!

    1. Hey Courtney,
I would defrost the shrimp first in the fridge. I hope you love this dish, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  5. Super filling and yummy! I halved the bell peppers and cream/milk. Cooked Arborio rice instead of orzo for a creamier base. Will make again, loved it.

Love this one! My husband is a huge fan of Cajun and this is one of his favourite dishes now! Sometimes we swap the shrimp with chicken and plain rice. I’ve made this a few times. My husband hated orzo before this. Now he actually enjoys it! I also love using the Lemon Basil Orzo as a quick side to meals. Super easy and tastes delicious, especially with fresh herbs!

    1. Hey Jessica,
Happy Friday! Thanks a bunch for making this recipe, I am delighted that it was enjoyed! Have a great weekend:) xTieghan

Made the shrimp and orzo for my family tonight – my dad nearly licked the plate. Super delish – and the orzo flavors with the shrimp and sauce – magnificent!

Wonderful…and it would be better if I could get a New Orleans Cajun mix. The only cajun I can find (Switzerland) is rather mild and bland. Nevertheless, this will be a regular choice on our dining table. As always, thanks for your brilliant recipes.

I have also made this twice in a week.:0) Amazing and easy. I believe that the bell pepper sets off the sauce with that kick from the Cajun seasoning, sooo good and fresh.

I loved everything about this meal and so did my whole family!! It was so easy to prepare and I literally had all the ingredients to make it tonight for dinner! The lemon basil orzo… YES YES YES! I did use coconut milk instead of milk, only because my latest obsession is cooking with coconut milk! Thank you for always having the best recipes! 💛

This was absolutely delicious! I used Slap Ya Mama Hot for the cajun seasoning and the spice level was perfect (for me anyway, I like spicy). Having the leftovers for my lunch today. So, so good! Thank you for the recipe.

    1. Hey Kristin,
Wonderful! Thanks a lot for giving this recipe a try, I am so glad it was enjoyed! xTieghan

  15. I made this dish two ways for my bunco group – one with shrimp and the other with chicken tenders. Both were equally good and got rave reviews. (I used mini penne for the chicken.) My only concern is that the parmesan in the recipe seized in the bottom of my sauce. Any suggestions why?

    1. Hey Helen,
Fantastic! Thanks so much for making this recipe, I am so glad it was enjoyed! Sorry to hear about your parmesan, did you use freshly grated? Have a great weekend☀️ xTieghan

    1. Hey Gabby,
Sure, that will work well for you. I hope the dish turns out amazing, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

This was fabulous! I swapped out Cajun seasoning for Old Bay being that’s all I had on hand – it reduced the spice but still ended up tasting great. I did a half cup of milk instead of a full cup and then added a little cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce. Will definitely be making this again!

    1. Hey Amanda,
Awesome! Love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for giving it a try! xTieghan

  17. Love this recipe!!! I have made it twice for my family and they all love it!! Especially my 15 year old son that is super picky. Thank you!

    1. Hey there,
Yes, you can use chicken or veggie broth in place of the white wine. I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  18. Sooo good! The sauce was a little thin for our liking so we just added an egg yolk (tempered, of course!) and it was so so good. Thank you for the recipe!!

    1. Hey Jasmine,
Thanks so much for making this recipe, I love to hear that it was enjoyed! Have a great week:) xTieghan

  19. Hi! Do you think this recipe will work with scallops instead of shrimp? It’s just what I have on hand 🙂

Fantastic! Thanks a lot for giving this recipe a try, I am so glad it was enjoyed! Have a wonderful holiday weekend 🇺🇸 xTieghan

  22. I would make this again but the sauce is too thin. It does not “thicken slightly” and I wonder if I shouldn’t have made a roux first??? My family would have liked it better had it had some body to the sauce.

    1. Hey Amy,
Thanks for giving the recipe a try, so sorry your sauce didn’t thicken. I really didn’t intend for this sauce to be thick, but if you prefer that then I certainly think a roux would help. I hope this helps for next time! xTieghan

  23. 5 stars
Delicious! I used a poblano pepper because that’s my current favorite to have on hand. We also did rice instead of orzo. My husband loved it too!

    1. Hey Stephanie,
Happy Friday!! I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! xTieghan

Very tasty! Did minor changes – no basil – used parsley. My fam is LF so used LF milk + cornstarch. Lots of flavour. Loved that you gave the recipe for the cajun spice. Will make again!

Awesome! I am so glad that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for giving it a try! xxTieghan

  26. Fabulous. As we were eating my husband said this is something f that could be served in a restaurant—just like others said. My sauce could have been thicker. Need to read more reviews and see if any suggestions. Taste was awesome. Really does make 6 generous servings.

    1. Hey Karen,
Thanks a bunch for giving this recipe a try, I am delighted that it was enjoyed! Have a wonderful week:) xTieghan

  27. I had to be this person, but do you think this would work with dry-fried tofu in place of shrimp? It sounds so yummy but my partner hates seafood.

Sure, I don’t see why this wouldn’t work for you. I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

Made this tonight. I thought the flavors were great. I used an olive oil infused with chile peppers for extra spice, did not use the thyme because I just did not have it. Very good!

Served with a side salad and had grilled corn on the cob. Lots of leftovers.

    1. Hey there,
Wonderful! I am so glad this recipe was a hit, thanks a lot for making it! Have a lovely week:) xTieghan

Made this with tofu instead of shrimp, almond milk, and left out the butter and parm to make it vegan. So good! The tofu soaked up the sauce. The Cajun seasoning has a great heat. I love the freshness of the basil. Another winner!

Wonderful! I am so glad this recipe was a hit, thanks a lot for making it! Have a lovely week:) xTieghan

    2. Made this tonight, bought the Thrive Market Cajun spice and used basil infused olive oil with the orzo. The flavor was amazing! I loved it! I made cornbread rolls for the side. I forgot fresh basil and thyme so I used dried. Next time I’ll use fresh herbs. Great recipe!!

  38. I made this for dinner a few nights ago and it was a big hit! Very flavorful — and the sauce, while creamy and rich, was not so heavy as to overpower the flavors of the herbs and other ingredients. This one goes on *repeat* for sure!

    1. Hay Jacquelyn,
Wonderful! I am so glad this recipe was a hit, thanks a lot for making it! Have a lovely week:) xTieghan

Made this last evening for 4 . Was plenty of food and was absolutely fantastic. My husband said it was a” restaurant quality meal” . I prepared as written but added the juice of entire lemon to the orzo. Beautiful presentation and an impressive very easy meal . Will absolutely be added to our rotation.

I made this tonight and my family loved it. The shrimp was delicious. I have two questions. First, step 3 of the directions says to add butter but that is not listed in the ingredient list? Second, 1/2 cup of parmesan is listed but not a specific item in the directions. When should it be added?

As others have said, this feeds more than 2, all 5 of us ate and it was plenty.

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hey Rachel,
Happy Friday! I am so glad that you enjoyed this recipe, thanks so much for giving it a try! The recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of butter, the parmesan is added in step 4. xxTieghan

So disappointed in this one 🙁 the sauce never thickened and the cheese coagulated into a tacky mess. Was really looking forward to this dish. Not sure where it went wrong!

    1. Hey Michelle,
So sorry you did not enjoy the recipe, the sauce really isn’t meant to be a thick sauce. You want to use freshly grated cheese to avoid that issue. I hope this helps! xTieghan

  46. 5 stars
This recipe is a killer! We all loved it!!! I subbed garlic scapes for regular garlic, added green onions and topped the bowls with a small squeeze of lemon. I also barely sautéed the shrimp, so that they wouldn’t over cook when they simmered in sauce. Definitely a keeper!

    1. Hey there,
Happy Friday! I am so glad that you enjoyed this recipe, thanks so much for giving it a try! xxTieghan

  47. This looks delicious but the serving size seems off for 2 servings. Should it be 4 servings since it is 2 pounds of shrimp and 1 pound of orzo? Can’t wait to try it.

    1. Leanne,
We will get more like 6-8 servings out of this dish. Do you need a pound of orzo? Maybe not, but who doesn’t want a little extra for orzo salad later in the week?

    2. Hey Leanne,
This recipe makes 6 servings. I hope you love the dish, let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

    1. Hey Kaitlyn,
You are going to use 5 tablespoons of olive oil. 2 tablespoons in step 1, 1 tablespoon in step 2, 1 tablespoon in step 3, and the last tablespoon in step 4. I hope you love the dish, let me know if you give it a try.

  48. When do you add the parmesan? It’s in the ingredient list, but I didn’t see it in the directions. Am I misreading it?

    1. Hey Jacquelyn,
The parmesan is added in step 4. I hope the recipe turns out amazing for you. Please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

    1. Hey Sandra,
Yes that recipe is listed above in the recipe notes section. I hope you love this dish, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  49. 5 stars
The shrimp dish is sooo good! I did not make the orzo. Served with French bread to dip into the sauce. Will make for Sunday dinner for sure! So quick and easy to make as well.
    Thank you!
    Kimberly

    1. Hey Kimberly,
I really appreciate you giving this recipe a try, I am thrilled that it was enjoyed! xxTieghan

  50. When do you add the parmesan? It isn’t specified in the recipe directions… Assuming after you’ve added the milk… Thanks!

    1. Hey Kim,
The parmesan is added in step 4. I hope you love this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  51. Looks delicious! Will the bell pepper break down on its own or the recipe missing a step (blending)?
