Because it’s Friday and we need our fix…5 Minute Molten Chocolate Mug Cake. You don’t need to be a skilled baker to bake up these deliciously EASY chocolate mug cakes. This deep-dish style cake in a mug requires just one coffee mug, simple pantry staple ingredients, and takes almost no effort or time to make. There are hints of vanilla, swirls of melted chocolate, and every bite is truly delicious. Enjoy this personal-sized cake warm, right out of the microwave, with a scoop of ice cream.

The entire world is baking right now, it’s impressive and exciting. I love so much that you all are making the best of this time at home…and baking up a storm. I’ve said it before, but it’s so fun to see all the HBH recipes being made. And the desserts are without a doubt the most popular.

But the thing that I’ve come to realize? Some of us don’t need a strawberry cobbler that serves eight people. Or a three-layer cake that feeds a twenty-person birthday party. Or two dozen homemade Somoas cookies. Nope, most of us don’t need all those servings. Though I personally love a little leftover dessert…you know for late-night snacking and TV watching.

Sometimes, like on Friday or Saturday night, we just need a rich, heavy on the chocolate, warm, and melty piece of chocolate cake…with a scoop of ice cream too.

Yes, sometimes that is just what we all need most.

Enter these cute little warm chocolate-filled mug cakes. They require no oven and instead are baked in the microwave and ready in just about five minutes.

Truth is, I’m not usually someone who uses the microwave. In fact, for many years I actually didn’t have a microwave in my house. I don’t often find many uses for it, but sometimes it’s a handy kitchen appliance. And you know something? It does have the ability to create a delicious chocolate mug cake within just 5 minute’s time. If there was ever a reason to own a microwave, this cake recipe is it.

The quick details.

This cake comes together in five minutes tops, so the details are pretty darn quick.

Start with your wet ingredients. I like to use coconut oil as the oil for these cakes. Melt it in the microwave in the mug you plan to “bake” your cake in. Once melted, whisk in a single egg, a few tablespoons of milk, a splash of vanilla, and honey…to sweeten things up. I personally like to use honey as my sweetener as I’ve found it creates a perfectly soft, tender, and moist cake. But maple syrup or granulated sugar work well too.

Once the wet ingredients are combined. Stir in the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. At this point, the cake is almost ready for “baking”.

But I have a couple secrets.

First, coffee. Now, if you don’t enjoy coffee you can use an equal amount of water, but I will say that you really don’t taste the coffee. It only highlights the flavors of the chocolate and creates a slightly “gooey” cake. You want to swirl the coffee into the batter, not fully incorporating it. This is key and keeps the cake from drying out.

Second, chocolate chunks…and a generous helping too. The chunks are a must and act as the “molten” layer to these mug cakes. You will add them to the center of the batter. As the cake bakes, the chocolate sinks in, melting as it sinks. It leaves you with a puddle of warm melted chocolate at the bottom of your cake. With every bite, a little of that melted chocolate is scooped up with the cake.

And it is delicious.

Key for success.

Eat this warm, right after cooking. This isn’t a cake you want to eat leftover, it’s meant as a quick chocolate fix. It should be eaten right away and preferably with ice cream on top.

Nothing is better than warm cake with vanilla ice cream. SO. GOOD.

I will say that that every microwave is different, so the cooking time is a little tricky. That said, I tested this on two different microwaves and found two minutes to be just the right amount of time. You may need to adjust slightly by fifteen seconds, give or take.

So with all that, have I convinced you that you need a chocolate mug cake in your life tonight?

This is the best afternoon pick me up…warm after dinner dessert…or late-night snack with a side of TV watching. Hey, don’t judge, this is life in quarantine. It’s weird, and the normal “rules” of life just don’t apply. So enjoy your cake…any time of day you like!

See you all tomorrow for another Cocktail Saturday.

  • 1. Melt the coconut oil in a (10-12 ounce) microwave-safe mug. Whisk in the egg, milk, vanilla, and honey until combined. Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt, stirring until just combined.
    2. Spoon the coffee into the center of the batter and gently swirl it in. Do not fully incorporate the coffee. Place the chocolate chunks in the center of the batter.
    3. Microwave on full power for 1 minute 45 second to 2 minutes (I always do 2 minutes). Dig your spoon deep into the cake to spoon up melted chocolate with every bite. Serve with ice cream. ENJOY.

To Oven Bake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 2 cup oven safe ramekin/mug or 2 muffin tins. Add the batter and bake 22-25 minutes.
Microwave: every microwave is very different, so results may vary slightly. I have a 1200 watt microwave and found 2 minutes to be the perfect cooking time. You may need to cook 1 minute 45 seconds or 2 minutes 15 seconds. Start with 2 minutes.
Coffee: if you prefer to not use coffee, use an equal amount of warm water.

Don’t waste your ingredients on this recipe. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever tasted. None of the chocolate was “lava” it just soaked into the sponge. And really no flavour other than eggy sponge. I’d find another recipe.

    1. Hey Hilda,
Awesome! Love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Have the best weekend:) xTieghan

  2. a good mug cake recipe, except don’t skimp on the honey I did 2 tbs needs more or chocolate chips. And my uk 800watt microwave 2 mins was too much I lost the goo 🙁 so trying 1.45 next time.

    1. Hey Hannah,
Happy Friday! So glad to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks for giving it a go! xTieghan

I have tried many mug cakes and usually am disappointed. Not with this one! I think the honey helps it not be grainy – which has been my past experience. Delicious, will definitely be making this again.

    1. Hi Aja,
Happy Friday!! I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! xTieghan

Looks great I’ll try it on the weekend. In the video it would be great if the ingredients are written in a dark colour to make it easier to see as it’s white you can’t see what your adding, since the marble top is mostly white making the ingredients typed blend in.

    1. Hey Mojo,
Wonderful! I am thrilled to hear that this recipe was enjoyed. Thanks a bunch for giving it a try! xTieghan

  4. I’ve made a mug cake maybe once or twice before and it’s never cooked through appropriately – like super gooey in the middle/bottom. This had the perfectly baked consistency throughout and the flavor was delicious. I topped with coconut whipped cream – all I had on hand, and it was the perfect indulgence for my daughter and I. Thanks!!!

    1. Hey Kaylyn,
Fantastic!! Love to hear that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Have a great Sunday:) xxTieghan

Mine turned out eggy and rubbery too. It’s a shame because the flavor was great, but I could only eat a few bites. Used 3 tbsp maple syrup as the sweetener. Checked it after 1:45 seconds, added the final 15 seconds, and then another 30 seconds to see if the consistency would improve. My egg was straight from the fridge mixed into the warm melted coconut oil. Could that be causing the difference?? Or adjusting the power on the microwave? I’m sad this was my first HBH flop :'(

    1. Hey Emily,
So sorry you did not enjoy the recipe. I am thinking it may have been in the microwave for too long! xTieghan

Made this and another blogger’s chocolate mug cake to see which I prefer. This was my preference – better texture and I subbed half the flour for almond meal. Really delicious. And I now I can’t decide between this and the banana bread mug cake – I’ve been eating both wayyyy to much!

    1. Hey Katie,
I am thrilled this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Happy Sunday! xTieghan

Most of the blame goes on my old microwave for this, but: was liquid at the 2 minute point, and when finished, had bits of hard boiled egg throughout. That’s not the recipes fault – but if you don’t have a brand new/reliable microwave, don’t bother. It will not work and you will be sad as you spoon out the remnants from your cute pokemon mug.

As for the actual recipe I felt like the honey and coconut oil flavors were a little too noticeable, but was otherwise fine.

This cake is very moist and taste was delicious. I used canola oil and 2 T. granulated sugar. I’ve also made the banana one and is also delicious. My husband kept saying how great it was. Thanks so much!

    1. Hey Brandie,
Thanks a lot for giving the recipe a go, I am so delighted that it was enjoyed! Have a great week:) xTieghan

Please add some tips on how to make this so it’s not all rubbery. Maybe the flour didn’t combine correct? 🙁

    1. Hey Elizabeth,
So sorry you had issues with the cake, did you adjust the recipe at all? Overcook? I do have tips on not overcooking:) Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

Good recipe – but cake-in-a-mug recipes always taste kind of bland and eggy to me. The lava worked well, but the taste is meh. I think the coconut oil solidified while I was making it a bit too, leading to clumps. I think someone should try this with a different oil, and with applesauce as an egg substitute, and that might work out really well!!

    1. Hi! I am sorry this did not turn out as expected! If there is anything I can help with, please let me know! xTieghan

  14. Are you fucking kidding me? I can’t even look up a mug cake recipe without some twat going on about the coronavirus hoax because they can’t do their own research and blindly listen to their Twitter feed?

  15. 2 stars
Ok, I made it twice and got yucky results both times. To be fair, I didn’t remember the tablespoon of water the second time. Dunno why, but it just didn’t turn out for me at all.

    1. Hi Heidi! I am really sorry to hear that! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help! Otherwise, I hope you love some other recipes of mine! xTieghan

  16. Mug cakes are my go to snack, although I have to limit to once a week or I might become obsessed. Do you have an average calorie intake for this recipe?

    1. Hi Jemima! I am not sure on the calories. So sorry! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am so glad you love this recipe! Thank you!! xTieghan

  17. Tieghan,
My 9 year old daughter has made this recipe at least 5 times now. She bakes it in the oven and it’s the best! Your recipes are always so delicious!
    Thank you!

This recipe is insanely full of fat and calories. I hope no one is having this as a mid- day snack. This mug is about 1,000 calories!!!!!! I made it this evening and shared it with my husband. I used buckwheat flour and only 1.5 tbsp of honey. 4 tablespoons of sweetener???! That is nuts. Either way, it was a good dessert. And WAY better with fresh raspberries. I would recommend using a shorter mug. Mine wasn’t molten, no big deal. Obviously all the melted chocolate was at the bottom and would have been nice to have it spread out. I used a 16 ounce David’s Tea mug.

    1. Hi Trish! I am glad you both enjoyed this recipe! I am sorry if you thought this was lower in calories, but it is still cake, just an easy way to make it! xTieghan

  19. Hi! I’ve recently discovered your IG and I’m obsessed! We are gluten free (food allergies) and I have easily adapted a lot of your recipes to fit us… do you think this mig cake would still work with a gluten-free flour? Thanks for helping me bring my cooking game up a notch!!

    1. Hi Cristina,
I am so glad you have been enjoying the recipes! I have not tested this with gluten free flour but I am sure it will work! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

The cake was really gross I couldn’t finish it. It came put super chewy, not moist at all, and very dense. All around awful, I was sk disappointed.

I think this is the best molten chocolate cake in a mug recipe I have ever had!
The ingredients make it perfect, especially the addition of coffee. My husband said I could make it again sometimLe, which is a sign he loved it, too!

    1. Hi Eena,
Yes that will totally work! Just make sure it can hold 12 ounces. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

    1. Hi Ron! I am really sorry to hear that! Is there any questions I can help with? Or anything you could have changed about the recipe? xTieghan

    1. Hi Christina,
You can omit the cocoa powder and add 1/4 cup of flour. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

I changed some parts, like I made double the recipe but with one egg instead of two and I didn’t add any chocolate but wow I’m amazed! I love this, it’s easy and quick and the baking powder helped it rise and be an actual cake and not mud! 10/10, thanks for sharing 🙂

  23. 3 stars
Unfortunately this recipe didn’t turn out for me. Flavor was very nice and dark, not too sweet with ~2 Tb honey. However, the texture was strangely gummy and the chocolate chunks did not sink to the bottom. Maybe they were too dark, since I only have 80% on hand. Might all be chalked up to my weak secondhand microwave, though – it’s so hard to know how microwaves compare!

    1. It is hard! I am sorry this did not turn out well for you, Anna! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help! xTieghan

  24. I like to indulge in treats as well as the next person! I also much prefer to have a nutritional and calorie information included in all recipes that I make.
I hope you will include that information in the future. I love the truth!as well as the facts!

    1. Hi Lola! I am sorry, but I do not have the nutritional information for this one! I hope you try it and enjoy! xTieghan

I just made these as a last-minute dessert for my parents and I! I used 3 2-cup Pyrex containers and they turned out great. I used maple syrup instead of honey and put about 2.5 Tbsp in each, and for the chocolate, I used 70% cacao. Next time I think I’ll use a little more sweetener just because the chocolate isn’t overly sweet. The texture was a little different than other lava cakes I’ve had, but still great! Very delicious and simple!! I will for sure make these again!

  28. Tieghen, we LOVED this cake. I am in quarantine with my daughter and her very best friend who is heading to Maine for a month and this was dessert for her going away party. It was AMAZING! We did not add coffee, just a little extra maple syrup. Paired with whipped frozen bananas (ice cream) and left over caramel sauce. OMG! Delicious!! Will try to send photo. Thank you. Awesome recipe!!

I just made this lava cake for myself and my husband and we were both really overwhelmed with the flavor- maybe we didn’t use enough sugar? The recipe indicated 2-4 tbsp, and I went with two. The cake was pretty bland and only the chocolate really gave it any flavor. I’m open to trying it again if I know which tweaks to make!

    1. Hi,
So sorry you didn’t enjoy the recipe. Next time I would do the full 4 tablespoons of sugar, this is personal preference. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  31. This was delicious!! And yes you convinced me to have a mug cake – because before I saw this photo I wasn’t even thinking about it 🤣 is it ok that I added skor bits on top for a bit of crunch?!😊 it was absolutely the most moist mug cake I have made! I’ve had many dry ones! Hubby and I downed it within minutes!

    oh. my.
this was SO good. and SO EASY! my family LOVED them!
I saw someone mention calories but I don’t see any listed on this recipe..? I’d love to know. (or maybe I don’t lol)

Sorry, I just thought of something else. The coffee is a must, it just brings out such a rich flavor. I happen to love coffee, so I made just a little table spoon of expresso, I seriously might go home and make another mug tonight.

  34. WOW!!! This recipe was so easy and so delicious! I made a couple of mugs on Friday night using honey and it turned out perfect. To my surprise, it was a little rich for me, I could only eat half of my cake. Thankfully, my husband was more than happy to finish the other half. Then, I made a mug on Saturday night using sugar. I appreciate the options in ingredients and both turned out delicious. I have been passing this recipe out to friends and coworkers, great job Tieghan, thank you!

  35. After a couple of tries, I’m just not sure how to get this recipe to work. My first mug cake was rubbery and tasted salty with little chocolate flavor. I reviewed the recipe to ensure I didn’t miss/mess up anything then tried again, with less salt and 15 seconds less in the microwave. Not as rubbery but still lacking a good chocolate flavor. I guess I’ll just bake other desserts!

    1. Hi Katelyn! I am really sorry to hear that! Is there anything you might be missing in the recipe? I would love to help! xTieghan

  36. 1 star
Sad to say this was a rare miss for us. Baked them in the oven since we have no microwave but I think the amount of coconut oil was too high as they came out oily and the taste of it pervaded the cakes- but also the chocolate flavor didn’t come out enough. It just didn’t feel very deep, if that makes sense. I used espresso powder instead of brewed coffee since I made these at night and didn’t want to put a pot on.. Maybe that’s where things went awry

    1. Hi Caroline! I am sorry this did not turn out well for you! Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with! xTieghan

I followed the recipe, used canola oil, 2 T of sugar…1 minute 45 seconds – Perfect! I am amazed and so is my husband ❤️ We split one with ice cream. Will definitely make again. Thanks!

I just made this recipe! And it was awesome! I tweaked it a bit bc I didn’t have flour or cocoa but I did have a chocolate box cake mix. I added 1/4 c + 2 tbs of cake mix and since it is already sweet didn’t add honey. After putting the chocolate chunks I added a bit of pecans! So good thank you for this idea!! <3

    1. Hi Diana! I am really glad this one turned out so well for you! Also, love that you were able to alter it with what you have! Thank you! xTieghan

    1. Hi Sarah! I hope you enjoy these more with less salt! Please let me know if there is anything I can help with! xTieghan

  39. My daughters and i made these tonight, super yummy and quick. We each made our own mug, but each ate only half. Thanks for the recupe!

    1. Thank you for trying this one Heather! Also, so sweet to make with your daughters! I am glad you all enjoyed this and hope you are all staying well! xTieghan

Absolutely perfect!! I’m allergic to eggs and milk so made it vegan using a flax egg and plant milk (chose macadamia milk since I happened to have macadamia honey as well). Worked seamlessly, cooked for 2 minutes. Coffee is definitely the secret ingredient. So good!!

    1. Oh no! I am really sorry to hear that Sarah. I would love to help if you could let me know if anything went wrong! xTieghan

    1. Ooo I think that would be delicious! Please let me know if you try it! I hope you love this recipe Rayann! xTieghan

I made this on a whim, and wow! I substitute oat milk and it came out just fine! Nice, fudgey texture and a perfectly portioned treat!

  42. This looks delicious, but 3 tbsp coconut oil alone is ~350 calories, and is quite a lot of oil for a single serving, is this meant to be less?

    1. Hi Maria,
The recipe is correct, it is 3 tablespoons of coconut oil. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions!

  43. Hi there, this looks delicious! Question: can you use avocado oil in this, and if so, what would the measurement be, still 3 tbs? Thank you!

    1. Hi Patricia,
In place of the coconut oil I would use olive oil or canola oil. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions!

  44. 5 stars
Thanks so much for the oven directions. I don’t own a microwave, so that was perfect! Love your recipes!

  45. I think this sounds great. Just wondering about the amount of coconut oil. 3 tablespoons seems like quite bit for one serving.

  46. Hi Tieghan. What size mug did you use? I’m thinking that could account for cooking time variations. Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Megan! I used an average sized coffee mug. It has a wider mouth though. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with! xTieghan

    1. Hi Michelle,
You can use olive oil or canola oil for the coconut oil and warm water for the coffee. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions!

  47. 3 Tablespoons of coconut oil? That seems like a lot for one serving! Is that supposed to read 3 teaspoons?

    1. Hi Amy,
The recipe is correct, it is 3 tablespoons. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions!

  48. i would love to try this recipe, but I don’t have a microwave ! Do you think this works also in a normal oven ?
    thanks for your suggestions8

    1. Hi Huemer,
Yes you can make this in the oven, all of the instructions are in the notes section. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

To Oven Bake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 2 cup oven safe ramekin/mug or 2 muffin tins. Add the batter and bake 22-25 minutes.

  49. Oh Tieghan these look amazing!! Unfortunately I don’t have a microwave, can they be made in the oven? I know that kind of defeats the whole’ quick dessert’ thing, but I’d still love to make them! Thanks for all your amazing recipes, they ALWAYS turn out amazing.

I just made this as a Sunday night treat, before the week begins again!! Used canola oil, regular sugar, almond milk, a large egg and semi sweet chocolate chips. It turned out great!! I put vanilla ice cream on top. My microwave is 1100 watts and I cooked it for 1 minute 40 seconds. Very flexible recipe so don’t be afraid to use what you have on hand!!

  51. I don’t have a microwave because our old one just broke but this looks fun and easy to make and i think that i should try this soon when we get our new microwave!?☺??♡

  52. I’m sorry, but I wasted 2 eggs on this “recipe”. Both times I ended up with a mug of rubber that was barely reminiscent of chocolate. There are real and better versions if whatever this is, out there.

    1. Hi Patty! I am so sorry to hear that. Is there any questions I could help you with? I hope you try some other recipes on my blog!

    1. Hi Tani! I am so sorry to hear that! Is there anything I can help you with so it turns out better next time! Please let me know!

The recipe is amazing BUT why doesn’t it shock anyone that there’s so many recipes on this site named “single lady” ?!! You don’t need to be single nor a lady to appreciate a solo treat.
Yes, this is “just” a recipe and probably not willing to harm but it’s all the small things we see/hear/read daily that encourages men vs women stereotypes. We all -including me- need to be aware of our sayings’s influence.

Sorry for the mistakes if there is any, I’m not from an english speaking country

    1. Hi Johanna! Thank you so much for your comment. What I mean by single lady in this caption is that the recipe only makes one serving, making it perfect for one person. I did not mean to offend anyone in anyway and I apologize. I hope you can see past this misunderstanding and enjoy some of the recipes on my blog!

  54. This was very good. I didn’t put the coffee on top but did put whipped cream. Really hit the spot, kinda full now:). I will try cutting the recipe in half next time! Thanks for sharing!

  55. I just tried this cake which looked so decadent for my busy weekday. i was craving dessert and this quick microwave cake looked great! However, I have to say, i was quite disappointed. I did everything according to the recipe but the cake turned out to be a jell-o like consistency; gooey and bland. I didn’t do anything different except substitute the coconut milk for regular milk and the coconut oil for butter. My microwave was 1250 watt so I warmed it for a minute and 20 seconds rather that 2 minutes. I don’t think i did anything incorrectly but it was really sad to have to throw away food (dessert especially)! Please let me know if I was doing anything incorrectly.

    1. HI! I am SO sorry for the trouble! I have found that a lot of people microwaves are very different and can produce extremely differently results. That said, this is supposed to be a very goey cake, so maybe it was just a little gooier than you where thinking. Please let me know if you have any questions or how I might be able to help. Thank you!

  56. Hi, this looks really yummy and I really want to try it but I was wondering if it was possible to sub the coffee with something else?

  57. I just made this and it’s delicious, I’ve tried and failed at numerous mug cake recipes, this worked 🙂
It made a HUGE cake, I shared with my partner and the left overs are in the fridge for tomorow!
I also had to modify your recipe as is isn’t have all the ingredients. I only had 1tbs brown sugar but it was still perfectly sweet. I used rice bran oil as it was more convenient, and normal light cow’s milk. And I just sprinkled instant coffee granules on top and poured on some hot water. And had just 1tbs milk choc chips.
Nevertheless, it was really very very yummy 🙂

        1. Hmm, I am wondering if that was too long. You microwave might be stronger, which would have made the cake rubbery.

  58. Your pix looked soo good I just had to try it! Unfortunately I think I kept it in for too long. My microwave is only 850 watts and usually has to work a lot harder than others… So I kept it for… 3 minutes! (I know i know)

But you know what while it was a bit extra chewy… The taste was pretty good! I ate it all up haha

  59. Hi! I was just wondering if you knew how to make this lava-cake like with the center oozing out with chocolate? Excited to try this, thanks for the recipe! 🙂

    1. Hey Joy!

try add in a scoop of nutella to the center before cooking OR you could also use chopped chocolate too. Hope that helps and I hope you love this!

  60. I’m a baker but I must admit, this is the best dessert I’ve ever made!!! We love to use Andie’s mint chips in the center over mint chocolate chip ice cream. My family loves this recipe. Who knew a delicious creation could come from a microwave…everyone must try this!!!!

  61. Hey there,
So excited to try this out! I do have a question though: you mention that baking this in the oven instead of the microwave would take about 10-15 minutes–at what temperature should I bake the cake?

  62. Mine turned out the same, way too much like bread pudding. And the flavor was just kind of ‘blah.’

  63. This looks so yum! I was just wondering if you could maybe substitute the cocoa powder for cacao powder? Do you think this would work okay? Or splitting the 2 tbsps of cocoa powder for 1 tbsp of cocoa powder and 1 tbsp of cacao?! Let me know what you think! 😀

    1. Hey Donna! Honestly, I really do not know. I have never used is Cacaco powder. Let me know if you try it!

  64. I made this recipe, followed all yhe instructions but like Sabrina posted, mine turned out not good.
It was like a bread pudding, consistency was off and i was surely disappointed.
I made no changes to the recipe, used great quality ingredients, so i dont know what happened.
Any suggestions? You think one minute would be too little?

    1. Hey Anna,

I think this is probably because of your microwave, they are all different. I would try a minute, and then just go longer if needed. Sorry you are having trouble!

  65. I just made this for myself and my mother! We both enjoyed it garnished with some mint chocolate chip ice cream! Very moist! Does great in a pinch or a craving!

  66. I have a chocolate chip cookie in a mug recipe that I just love, so I will definitely try this one. I agree with avoiding microwave cooking but these little mug recipes are so nice in a pinch when you just want something chocolate but don’t want a whole cake or have time to make one. And your photos are gorgeous as always!

  67. I like this recipe. I too am not a mugcake person, per se, but last night I was between dragging myself to the grocery store (drag is an exageration – I live directly across the street from a huge supermarket) for the pint of Ben & Jerry’s I’ve been craving for months, or stay home in my pajamas and make a mugcake to soothe my sugar pangs. I went on a very well known blogger’s site looking for recipes and her “5-minute” recipe was literally a full blown cake just scaled down into one portion. So it had a list of at least 15 ingredients. I’m sorry, but I can’t locate AND measure, AND mix, AND bake with 15 ingredients in 5 minutes. Especially since there’s a step of dicing apples involved. I’m lucky if I can even gather all the ingredients within 5 minutes. AND if I’m going to go through all that work with 21947 ingredients, I might as well just make the full blown cake, cut it into portions, and freeze for later.

Thank you for keeping it on the simple side.

    1. SO HAPPY my recipe was able to please you! 15 ingredients for a mug cake? That sounds like a lot!

Thanks Melissa! Hope you have a great weekend!

  68. If only I would have had this 10 years ago when I was single and making an entire box of brownie batter for just me …. 🙂

  69. My cake came out awful, it was like a bad bread pudding. I also have a 1200 watt and followed the recipe to a “T” ! I was so looking forward to this, (still a great recipe), just an unknown error by me 🙁 ! Thanks for the fun experience though!

  70. Do you have a recommendation for substituting the coconut oil? I have an allergy to coconut. Otherwise, this little recipe would be lovely for when I get a cake craving. I have almost all of those ingredients on hand all the time.

      1. Hi there!!! Greeting from Argentina!!! I have just made this recipe and it was GREAT! The only thing, though, is that I had to substitute the coconut oil for sunflower oil, which is what we usually use here, and I used regular milk cause I didn’t have coconut milk (besides, it’s way too expensive in my country). I topped it off with a spoonful of DULCE DE LECHE and it was heavenly 😉 Love from way way south <3

  71. Oh man, I’m scrolling through thinking “these photos are gorgeous!” and here you are thinking they aren’t your favorite. They are absolutely stunning and I’m thinking about making myself a mug cake for dessert tonight now! I LOVE your mug too!

  72. Eeek I am not a single lady but this is my kinda cake! And sometimes things taste better when you can’t share right?! Hehe

  73. Wow, this is the most decadent cake in a mug I’ve ever seen! The molten center is such a great idea! And you’re right, it’s perfect for a Friday night!

  74. I’ve never been a huge fan of mug cakes either but this is one that I can definitely say I need to make asap! Agreed, one will not be enough so I’m thinking multiple mug cakes haha.

  75. Totally with ya on the microwave thing and one cake just not being enough but your mug cake looks so good that I might just have to make one while I watch some cheesy romantic movies this weekend!

  76. I have seen mug cakes all over also and have yet to try them. But, I trust your expert foodie opinion, so this single lady is going to give it a try!

  77. Girl these are some gorgeous photos you took!! I am not a fan of cooking in microwave too but recently I found myself in the same situation and tried this ever popular mug cake!! Yours look so pretty!

  78. I really want to make this, but stupid question: why the difference in sugar measurements (2-4 Tbsp.), and how much do you use?

  79. The pictures still look great and definitely get across how delicious it is!!
PS mug cakes are also perfect for us pregnant gals who may need some chocolate in our lives very suddenly on any given night but still want the possibility of being healthy the next day, meaning no leftovers are perfect 🙂

  80. IT’S HEALTHY BECAUSE IT’S FRIDAY…. said everyone looking at this crazy delicious mug cake! love it T

  81. Your photos on your “bad” day are still wayyy better than mine on a good day! 😉 And L-O-V-I-N-G this mug cake, perfect for a girl that gets random bouts of chocolate cravings at odd hours of the night. (Ahem–me)

    P.S You changed your site!

  82. I’ve been craving chocolate all week and this is going to be the perfect ending to my night! So much better than buying the frozen kind.

  83. LOOOOOVE this single serve cake- it ain’t just for single ladies! Looks amazing! Also so glad the website loads more quickly! I stopped leaving comments because it took so long!

  84. Well this is just adorable! So quick and simple and it looks so delicious. Hope everything keeps moving along and that you can get back to your own kitchen soon!

  85. I was skeptical of mug cakes until I tried one that was delicious! This looks like it could definitely be part of that club…Your photos make me want one right now, so I think you achieved your goal…even if you had to run out with just a few pretty dishes and a piece of parchment…love the mug!

  86. ohhh Tieghan. We literally just got rid of our microwave, I wonder if I could bake it, not so quick but I really want to make it!

  87. Mmk I know you said these photos aren’t your favorite, but honestly I love them! And I’ve never tried a mug-cake (mostly because of all of the Pinterest fails I’ve heard about). But obviously I have been missing out! This looks so decadent!

  88. This is exactly what my Friday needs, T! All the gooey chocolate… in 5 minutes?! YES. Have a great weekend!

  89. I totally agree with your stance on mug cakes…why not just make a big one! But then there are times when you just need something quick that’ll fill that craving. Love this, and your pictures are beautiful!

  90. This looks INCREDIBLE!!!!! This is going to be a dangerous recipe for me and my waistline! Gorgeous 🙂

  91. These photos are absolutely stunning! I know all about not having a kitchen. It was so hard living without my kitchen for 4 months while I was having it renovated. This mug cake sounds and looks absolutely delicious. Pinned.

  92. I’m going to have to share this with my son. He makes chocolate mug cakes at least once a week, but I think this recipe is one he will love much better. Thanks for the recipe.

  93. I’ve never been able to make molten lava cakes the traditional way – definitely going to be giving this microwave version a try!

  94. Hubba hubba! Now that is my kind of mug cake! I totally feel ya on the microwave-skepticism, but something they just WORK.
I am all over this 5 minutes worth of chocolate heaven. Pinned!

  95. Yup, mug cakes are the bomb. And this recipe must literally be a bomb because I can just tell how dangerous it is! That center. Ugh, excuse me while I go make one. Or two.

  96. I have never made a mugcake before, but being a single lady as well I might have to give it a try once! Sometimes you just don’t want to bake a cake that serves many people, but just one for yourself, so this will be perfect!

  97. I’ve never made one either but I might just make one today. Low time investment plus I have a few ideas for add-ons so why not experiment! Gorgeous treats for a couple as well!

  98. I’ve never tried a mug cake but yours looks so good I may need to change that. I’m with you on microwaves it’s the one appliance I could do without forever. I even prefer reheating things in the oven they just taste better.

  99. Yum, This looks really good and simple too. The sprinkles are such a sweet touch. This may have to be a treat for my Valentine. : )

  100. I love these little cup/cakes in a mug.
    Oh this looks good.
I also like to make the egg for breakfast in one because it is quick and I can throw all kinds of things in with the egg.
But for now I will stick with oatmeal on these cold mornings.
But the mug cake would be a great after school treat.
