This Southern Style Creamy Parmesan Chicken Pasta is THE best any night of the week pasta. Lightly breaded parmesan chicken pan-fried until golden and crispy. The chicken is served over a big bowl of creamy southern-inspired cajun pasta. Every bite is layered with spicy flavor, bell peppers, crispy chicken, and creamy pasta. It’s the easiest, creamiest bowl of pasta that’s fancy enough for the weekend, but easy enough to make any night of the week. And most importantly, it’s delicious…especially with an extra sprinkling of parmesan on top!

Southern Style Creamy Parmesan Chicken Pasta | halfbakedharvest.com

Switching things up tonight with this creamy pasta! So, this wasn’t the recipe I was planning for today, but it’s all ok because this bowl of pasta is delicious… shockingly delicious. The story?

Well, as I said, I had something else in mind for today, but after thoroughly messing up big time with my other recipe, I pulled out this pasta. It literally saved the day. It’s not the most traditional pasta, but it’s fun, easy, and so great for a weeknight!

The idea.

This recipe was actually inspired by The Cheesecake Factory. I know this is a chain restaurant that so many of you love, but I’ve actually never been. Or if I have, I don’t remember it. Regardless I’m pretty unfamiliar with their menu…or I was.

After coming up with the idea to do a spicier cajun style pasta, Google somehow brought me to The Cheesecake Factory’s Louisiana Chicken Pasta. I was pretty curious to learn more about it, so I read the description. Breaded parmesan crusted chicken served over creamy pasta with bell peppers in a spicy New Orleans style sauce. I can’t say it sounded incredible, but it was definitely interesting to me. It was either going to be totally weird, or it was going to be weird…and delicious.

I went back and forth about how I actually felt about a cajun pasta. In the end, my love of spices won and I decided to test out my own version. I have not a clue how they make the pasta at The Cheesecake Factory, but what I do know is that this creamy cajun pasta is so delicious.

A little different, for sure, but DELICIOUS.

The process.

What’s amazing about this pasta is just how quickly it comes together. I like to start with the sauce, then pan-fry the chicken, and put it all together.

The sauce I adapted a bit from my Fettuccine Alfredo, really just adding in lots of bell peppers and my homemade cajun seasoning blend.

First, you’ll need to cook up some onions, peppers, garlic, herbs, and spices. Then add a splash of milk and plenty of parmesan. Next comes my dad’s secret ingredient…the tiniest amount of cream cheese…whisk it in!

I know cream cheese isn’t typical, but my dad used to make his alfredo sauces this way. I swear it creates a silky smooth sauce every time. We’re only using the tiniest amount, but that’s all you need to do the trick!

While the sauce is simmering, pan fry the chicken. I made sure to keep the chicken simple and easy. I used chicken cutlets, then simply breaded them in Panko and parmesan (don’t skip out on the parmesan!). Super simple, but when placed atop the creamy sauce? Beyond good.

Once the sauce has simmered, toss in the pasta. I like to use bow ties, but really any cut of pasta will do! And that’s it! Serve the chicken over steaming bowls of creamy pasta. Top with additional parmesan and fresh parsley. Yummmm.

This recipe is all about the sauce and that crispy chicken. The sauce is buttery, a touch garlicky, slightly spicy, and so creamy. It’s my favorite combo. And the crispy chicken? It’s a game-changer. Tender and delicious when thinly sliced and tossed in with the pasta.

The perfect dish for livening up an average Wednesday night. Or maybe save it for a Friday night? Honestly, this dish will be a hit whatever night you choose to serve it up…everyone in the family agrees.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain.
    2. Meanwhile, place the Panko and 1/2 cup parmesan in a shallow bowl. Dredge both sides of the chicken through the Panko, pressing to adhere by using your fist to really pound the crumbs in. Place the chicken on a plate. Set aside.
    3. To make the pasta. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the bell peppers, and garlic, cook another 5 minutes until the peppers are soft. Stir in the cajun seasoning, and a pinch each of red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Cook another minute, until the spices are fragrant, then pour in the milk and cream. Add the cream cheese. Whisk until smooth. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook 5-8 minutes, until thickened slightly.
    4. To cook the chicken. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until golden brown, 3-4 minutes. Flip the chicken and cook until golden brown on the other side, 3-4 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and season with salt. Slice into thin strips.
    5. To the sauce, stir in the parmesan. Toss in the pasta and cook 3-5 minutes, then remove from the heat and stir in the parsley.
    6. Divide the pasta between plates and top with slices of chicken. ENJOY 🙂

Notes

Homemade Cajun Seasoning: mix 2 1/2 tablespoons smoked paprika, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 tablespoon dried oregano, 1 tablespoon dried thyme, 1 tablespoon chili powder, 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper, 1 1/2 tablespoons kosher salt, and 1 tablespoon black pepper. Makes 3/4 cup.

sooooo good. i can’t believe i was capable of making a dinner that delicious (under your guidance of course). thanks for the recipe!

  2. Hi- all your recipes are delicious and my wife loves sending them to me to make while she takes care of our newborn baby boy. I would ask that you please adjust the time it takes to make your dishes because my wife thinks these are “quick and easy” but it always takes me 3x longer than stated and my wife gets hangry. Again they are delicious but please do all the husbands/dads a favor and be more realistic with the time it takes to cook!

    1. Hey Chris,
So sorry, unfortunately everyone moves around and cooks differently in the kitchen, it is really quite impossible for me to give a cook time for every type of cook. The times are what it takes me to make the meal without any interruptions:) xTieghan

      1. I have to agree with him and honestly anyone else I know who uses your recipes says that exact same thing about the timing. You’re recipes are incredible, and we use them weekly. However, it might be advisable for you to be generous with your time frames and remind yourself that we aren’t all as efficient as you are cooking. A labeled 30 min. meal usually takes me an hour to and hour and a half to make.

  3. Hi Tieghan,
I would like to make this for a dinner party Friday and need your input on how to make it ahead that evening(if I can). Along with that, recommendations for sides? Thanks for all your delicious recipes!!

    1. Hey Erica,
I would make the sauce ahead then finish the recipe when you are ready to serve. I would serve with a salad and crusty bread. I hope the recipe turns out amazing for you. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

My husband says, “Lex (that’s me), home run with this one. You knocked it out of the ball park. Everything came out perfect.” And this from a guy who doesn’t lovvvve pasta.

    It was outstanding.

    1. Hey Lexi,
Happy Thursday! Thanks so much for making this recipe, I am delighted that it was enjoyed! xTieghan

  5. I’d love to try this but I have a sensitive stomach and am worried it will be too rich/creamy for me. Do you have a suggested substitution for all the milk/cream? Thanks!

    1. Hey Molly,
Fantastic! I am so glad you enjoyed this recipe, thanks so much for making it! Happy Friday:) xTieghan

A++! I’m always looking for new pasta recipes and this one is a keeper. I had leftover rotisserie chicken so I mixed that in instead of making the breaded chicken – it was delish! Husband approved too 🙂

Thanks a bunch for giving this recipe a go, I am delighted that it was enjoyed! xTieghan

We’ve made this dish twice now.
First time, it was way too spicy for us. We were sweating while eating it and downing water bottles. We served our toddler something else that night.
This time, I took the spice down by 4.
Instead of 3-4tsp Cajun, I did only 1 & chose to
omit the pepper flakes (& add no ground black pepper).
This is MUCH more doable for us. Still has flavor, but can actually be served to young children. Just a tiny spicy-ness to it. For those who can handle more heat and want more flavor, I bet 2tsp would be ideal. Unless you can take the full-recipe-dosage! 🙂

Excited to try this dairy-free one day to it’s not too heavy on the tummy.

    1. Hey Taylor,
Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try, I am delighted that it was enjoyed! Have a fantastic week! xTieghan

  11. SO STINKIN’ GOOD. I didn’t have Cajun seasoning and used Creole Seasoning instead and it gave it a good kick. We sat outside in the sun and ate this for dinner. It was *chef’s kiss.*

    1. Hey Katherine,

Words cannot describe the deliciousness of this dish. I don’t like green bell peppers so I used red. So yummy!
Cooked chicken in my air fryer. Definitely going into my rotation!

  13. I made this tonight. Soo good! I’ve had this at Cheesecake Factory and this definitely competes. Love your recipes!

  14. This recipe was great! However, I used chicken cutlets and one pound of chicken wasn’t nearly enough for one pound of pasta. We ran out of chicken with a ton of pasta left so I recommend using more.

    1. Hey Danielle,
Thanks so much for giving this recipe a try, I am so glad it was enjoyed! Happy Monday! xTieghan

A new favorite for my husband and I. Followed recipe (with the exception I used a smidge more cream cheese😜) and we LOVED it. Paired nicely with champagne. 5 stars for us!

  17. Hi!
This looks great. Do you think the pasta could be made ahead? And make the chicken right before serving?

    Thanks!

    1. Hey Emily,
Sure that would be totally fine to do. I hope you enjoy this recipe, please let me know if you give it a try! xTieghan

  20. Hi
Just made the pasta and the Cajun sauce came out super spicy and salty. Are these all supposed to be tablespoons or teaspoons?
    Thank you

    1. Hey Avery,
All of the measurements are correct, but the actual recipe only calls for you to use 3-4 teaspoons of the cajun seasoning mix. If you used that entire mix, then next time you will want to be sure to reduce that! xTieghan

  21. Very spicy! I’ll try it again but I’ll but spices by 3/4….I did !/2 what was called for and we were all overcome by the heat

  22. 4 stars
Recipe tastes great. Only complaint is (once again) underestimating the time. 15 minute cooking time is a little ridiculous considering the sauce/pasta alone cooks for 20+ if done as written (5 for onion, 5 for pepper, 1 for spices, 5-8 for cream elements, 3-5 once pasta is added in).

    1. Hey Ellen,
I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! Sorry this took you longer than expected:) xTieghan

  23. I just made this for dinner and everyone loved it! I used a higher ratio of coconut milk to milk, and blended cajun and creole seasoning. The sauce was delicious and it was great with the slightly crispy chicken. I might try with scallops or crawfish.
This is my go-to food blog. Several of our favorites have come from halfbakedharvest and I recommend it all the time. Thank you and keep the brilliant recipes coming!

The Southern Style Parmesan Chicken Pasta was delicious. We like spicy food and it was perfectly seasoned. I didn’t see your recipe for the Cajun Seasoning until the end so I added some of your ingredients to my store bought cajun seasoning. I will definitely use your re ipe the next time I make this.

    1. Hey Sharron,

OMG! 10/10 recommend! I was a little skeptical while making the sauce and taste testing before it was done since it’s so different than my normal pasta dishes but OMG! HIGHLY recommend making Tieghan’s homemade Cajun seasoning! The spice that’s in every other bite makes the dish in my opinion! I also took the advice of another tester and added garlic and pepper to the bread crumb mixture, used about 3oz of cream cheese instead of two and ended up using a little over 1 cup of Parmesan in the sauce. The Parmesan chicken was so freaking good by itself!! Don’t skip out on sprinkling a little bit of salt on them once their done!!
FOR SURE a family favorite, HUSBAND LOVED IT, and will be adding this recipe to the rotation! Can’t wait to try some of her other recipes!!!

    1. Hey Nicole,
I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for giving it a try! Happy Easter 🌷Tieghan

  27. Hi, Tieghan! I see something that looks like brown sugar on your picture of the seasoning powders… Does your homemade cajun seasoning includes brown sugar at all? I looked the ingredients of the cajun seasoning you recommended from Thrive and that one contains cane sugar. I can’t wait to try this one 🙂
    Thank you

    1. Hey Jess,
Sorry for the confusion, you can add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar if you like a little sweetness! xTieghan

Personally, I am not a big spicy person so I only added half of the seasoning but this recipe was to die for. The chicken was perfect and the pasta was delicious. I am obsessed with all of the half baked harvest recipes because they are so full of flavor. I haven’t come by another cook who knows how to utilize spices quite the way Tiegan does. (I’m sorry I think I spelled that wrong.)

    1. Hey Emily,

Made this tonight for the family and it was a huge hit. I doubled the cream cheese, no judgement please. With some lemon parmesan asparagus on the side, this recipe is a definite keeper.

  32. 5 stars
Really good and surprisingly fast to make given all the components! I used 3tsp of the Cajun spice and it was a good amount of heat. I also halved the pasta and sauce for our family of 3 and it was the perfect amount. I was worried the breading would slide off without a flour/egg wash, but it fried up great! Definitely would make again!

    1. Hey Veronica,
I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it!! xTieghan

This pasta was absolutely delicious. I can’t even begin to describe how easy and flavorful this dinner was. My almost 5 year old son loved it too! Highly recommend. We only used a little bit of the cayenne to give it a little kick which was perfect for our family! The chicken got so crispy and was so good on top. Thanks for the great recipe!

It was either five ⭐️‘s or just one⭐️ because I couldn’t stop eating it! 😩 Lol. Soooo good! Definitely took longer for me to make than the time stated in the recipe though, but worth every minute!

Yes, I think either of those will work well for you! I hope you love the recipe, let me know how it turns out! xTieghan

Can’t really say enough how incredible this dish was – even though I screwed it up! When I went over the ingredients section to check the amount of panko, I saw the 1 1/2 cups of parmesan and whoops! used that much in the panko mixture. Aside from the chicken sticking to the pan a little bit and wasting a whole cup of parmesan (after all, I needed the rest for the sauce!) it was INCREDIBLE. We felt like we were eating at a restaurant – what a treat! Yeah there were a lot of dishes, but it made a ton of food. I sliced two large, mostly defrosted chicken breasts thinly and it made about 8-9 thin cutlets. Thank you for this!! Definitely a fave!!!!!! Can’t wait for leftovers tonight 🙂

    1. Hey Amy,
I am absolutely delighted that you enjoyed the recipe, thanks for making it! Have the best week☀️ xTieghan

This was excellent! It was exactly what my husband and I were craving on a cold, rainy day. One addition I made was using an egg wash before dredging the chicken in the panko/parmesan mixture. I was having a bit of trouble getting it to stick without it. Another hit recipe in our household!

  38. I’ve learned that my fam is not a fan of smoked paprika. But I definitely want to make this for my college boy coming home for spring break. Is regular paprika a good substitute in your dishes that call for smoked paprika? I know some of the flavor will be sacrificed but I’m wondering what you would suggest… Thanks!

    1. Hey there,
Yes, totally fine to use regular paprika. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

This meal was delicious! Super simple and the recipe came together quickly! Everyone loved it. Will definitely be adding it in to my pasta supper rotation. Honestly, everything I’ve made from Half Baked Harvest has been great! I don’t know how you do it 🙂 Thanks for another dinner hit!

So delicious! I just recommend to others that your check the salt content in your Cajun blend or mix your own. The brand I used was too salty, but the dish was still amazing.

We thought this was good! A little too spicy for a few of my kids but my husband and I thought it was the perfect amount of spice. My only change would be that my cheese/breadcrumb mixture burnt a bit in my pan so next time i might just try to cook the chicken in the oven. Will definitely make again!

    1. Hey Emilie,
I am delighted that this recipe was enjoyed, thanks so much for making it! Sorry about the spice! Happy Friday💕 xTieghan

I was so excited to try this recipe once I saw it and then so disappointed once I did. The sauce completely broke while cooking, so it came out chunky and oily at the same time. It looked so unappetizing (but at least it was seasoned well). The cream cheese probably didn’t help, but I don’t understand how this was supposed to be successful.

    1. Hey Michelle,
So sorry you had issues with the recipe, were your dairy ingredients at room temp? That usually helps to avoid the sauce from breaking. Let me know how I can help! xTieghan

  45. Made this and it was a hit! An amazing combo of flavors, nice heat, and the crispy chicken was delish! Adding this to the rotation for sure!

I’ve been following for a while, but tonight was my first time making one of your recipes. All of your recipes seem simple and flavorful. This one was delicious. I added tomatoes to the sauce for something else. I cooked the chicken in my air frier on 360 for 10 minutes, flipping in the middle. I do wish this had maybe some broccoli or spinach in it too. I wish I’d thought of that before my grocery store trip.

I just made this for my family, which consisted of an age range of 3 years old to 68 years old. I used the Cajun seasoning recipe, minus the cayenne due to the fact that my husband and I are spice wimps! I made the spicier version of the seasoning for the 30 year olds which they added to their servings. EVERYONE loved it. My husband is especially hard to please and he has already requested it again. Thank you so much!!

    1. Hey Cheryl,
I am thrilled to hear this recipe was enjoyed. Thanks so much for giving it a try. Have a great week! xTieghan

    1. Hey Lisa,
Sure, mascarpone cheese would work just fine. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  52. Should I dredge the chicken in flour and egg before coating with panko and Parmesan or is that unesscessary for this recipe?

    1. Hey Jennie,
No need for the flour and egg, I only do panko and parm. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

Ok guys, so unfortunately I have to replace all dairy and gluten with substitutes because I have food sensitivities. My twist on this turned out incredible! Instead of milk, I used Califia unsweetened unflavored almond milk. Instead of heavy cream, I used Three Trees organic unsweetened almond milk (it’s thicker than normal almond milk because it’s strictly water and almonds. Then I added a splash of avocado oil to the Three Trees almond milk to increase the fat percentage, making a heavy cream.) and lastly, for the cream cheese, I used Kite Hill cream cheese, which is my favorite non-dairy cream cheese. As for the Panko, I used Ian’s Panko breadcrumbs. You can find ALL these products at Whole Foods. I did have to sprinkle a little bit of cornstarch in the sauce to slightly thicken it. In the end, it turned out so yummy. I’m not a fan of using coconut milk for savory dishes like these because it changes the flavor too much. Thank you, Tieghan!

My husband LOVES Cajun-style pasta and this was aaaaamazing. The sauce was the best Cajun-flavored pasta sauce I’ve ever made. I happened to have cream cheese on hand (I rarely do) and I will never skimp on that again when it’s called for in a pasta sauce recipe. The chicken didn’t turn out as beautiful and (probably) delicious as yours, but that was operator error and nothing from your recipe. 🙂

    1. Hey Kenna,

  56. Hi Tieghan,

Cant wait to make this tonight as a naughty treat with my son coming home for the weekend. Planning to use coconut milk instead of cream but wanted to substitute the milk for almond milk, would this be ok or should i use more coconut milk? Also thinking of adding spinach, sound good? I, fairly new to you, but really enjoying you and everything i try is sooo tasty, thank you so much

    1. Hey Emma,
Yes, all of those substitutes would work just fine for you! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know how it turns out! xTieghan

I made this. The flavor of the cream sauce is excellent. I was challenged with timing the chicken to keep it warm. I used very thin fillets and Italian bread crumbs instead of panko. It was very good but did create a lot of dishes.

    1. Hey Helen,
I am thrilled this recipe was enjoyed, thanks a lot for making it! Happy Sunday! xTieghan

That was quite delicious! I, especially, loved the little kick at the end. Only bummer were all the pots, but that’s what husbands are for right?! 😊 Overall great, delicious, simple, weeknight comfort food that incorporated all my pantry and fridge staples.

This wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for, but i think the fault was mine so I’m still giving it 5 stars and I’ll try it again! Mine wasn’t saucy at all, which was a bummer. I made my chicken separately, baked in the oven like I usually do, so at the end of making the sauce when I added the Parmesan in I used the full 1 1/2 cups instead of what I now see would be only 1 remaining cup. So I think it just bound up the sauce too much. I might also try less pasta next time so I can get it more saucy – and I’m going to try the homemade Cajun seasoning, too. We all ate it and enjoyed it, though – even with my missteps, lol. Thanks!

Made this tonight. I used mushrooms and spinach instead of the peppers turned out fabulous. Love your style of cooking. Next time make it and use pork tenderloin maybe.

    1. Hey Leanne,
So sorry to hear this, it is important to make sure all of your creamy ingredients are at room temp, this will prevent the separating. I hope this helps for next time! xTieghan

This pasta was fantastic!! I made it tonight. I had chicken breasts in the fridge, but they were planned for another meal, so I used the kids favorite frozen chicken fingers instead, and they were great! This dish is versatile. I can see it being really good with grilled shrimp as well. Flavors are spot on—it’s a new family favorite. Thank you!!

Is there anyway to omit the 2 cups of milk ? Like a plant based milk or the cream cheese ? My stomach is sensitive to dairy other than that I want to cook this right now!

    1. Hey there,
I would recommend using coconut milk. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  64. The Cajun chicken pasta is my fav from the Cheesecake Factory and I’ve made some dups with success. Cannot wait to try your version!!

    1. Hey Nicole,
Yes, that should work well for you. I hope you enjoy the recipe, let me know how it turns out! xTieghan

This looks amazing and just what I needed for Friday Night Dinner tomorrow. I will adapt it slightly to make it gluten free by using crushed rice crisps instead of panko as I don’t have any GF panko at the moment.
Thanks very much for a great new idea.

  66. Tieghen, I just now saw the controversy over one of your recipes. I am so, so sorry and hope so much that this doesn’t keep you from doing what you do. Anyone who has followed you for any amount of time has gotten to know your kind, caring heart and admired your talent and your work ethic. This is so uncalled for, and I genuinely hurt for you right now. Please stay strong. You do not deserve this backlash. You are a kind and loving soul, as are your family members. This too will pass. Many hugs.

  67. You are a star! I appreciate your creativity and effort to make recipes from around the world accessible from our homes. I had a meal similar to this after a long rafting trip and both were highlights in my life. This is a trip down memory lane Thank you for being YOU.

  68. Hi there! This sounds amazing but I’m not a huge cream cheese fan. Any substitution ideas that you think might work well? Thank you so much in advance!

    1. Hey Veronica,
You could just skip the cream cheese, although I promise you won’t taste it and it adds so much creaminess to the dish. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  69. I worked on the pasta station as a line cook at CCF for 5 years. You nailed it! The pasta is not homemade at CCF. Just regular bowtie outta the bag and par boiled in the morning in batches. Then at service time is finished cooking in a salted hot water bath. But everything else is made fresh daily.

  70. Wow this is such a fun recipe! I feel like you haven’t posted anything like this for awhile, so I’m very excited to try!!!

    1. Hey Ashely,
Depending on the thickness of your chicken thighs, you may want to add a few minutes to your cooking time. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know how it turns out! xTieghan

  71. The Louisiana Chicken Pasta is what I almost always get at The Cheesecake Factory! I can’t wait to try out your version!

  72. This looks sooo good! my daughter is sensitive to spices so I wonder if it will taste as good if I omitted Cajun and red pepper flakes? or sub with something else? Maybe paprika??? Any suggestions I can try? Thanks

    1. Hey Marcea,
I think it would be totally fine if you just omit the cajun and red pepper flakes. I hope you love the recipe, please let me know how it turns out! xTieghan

  73. Ok the plate of seasonings is driving me crazy. Lol I’m convinced there is something there, NOT on your list of ingredients for the cajun seasoning. The pile of light brown something that looks like brown sugar??? What is it??? Lol

    1. It’s brown sugar!! I mixed up the ingredients on the plate by mistake. You have such a good eye for catching that!! Please let me know if you have any other questions. I hope you love this recipe! Thank you! xTieghan

  74. will be making this soon with few suvs will dm you if i make this soon and let you know how it goes Thanks Ramya

  75. This looks delicious and I have pinned the recipe for dinner this evening. Thank you for sharing 🙂

  76. This is so crazy as I was just thinking to make a Cajun chicken pasta and then your recipe popped up – like you read my mind! Have loved the content this year, easy tex-mex, nice pasta dishes, simple cakes, sheet pan dinners – the type of cooking that is attainable but turns perennial favourites into something special!
