{the sweetest plums from the market}

When I sat down to write this post, I literally thought to myself “what the heck am I going to talk about today”. Some people think that the life of a blogger must be somewhat glamorous and exciting. And while it certainly can be, most of the time is spent with my head down, working away on projects, recipe development, photos, responding to countless emails, comments, and Instagram messages. All with the normal day-to-to day life stuff sandwiched in between. Stuff like finding dog puke in your bed at 1 am when all you want to do is sleep, but instead need to change the sheets. Yes, that did happen, and no, it was not fun at all.

Point is, it was a busy week, but nothing too exciting to share. Oh well…

Well, I guess my brother Red did go to the ESPYS, so that’s kind of cool. And then my mom and little sister Asher flew out to LA last minute to accompany Red at the Kid’s Choice Sports Awards. He didn’t win, but it’s totally cool because it was just an honor to be nominated for an ESPY and a Kid’ Choice Award. They rode Bird Scooters (have you ridden these before?), played in the sun, and had a great time.

Oh! And I made my favorite homemade Naan and shared the process with you guys on Instagram…um, lots and lots of naan lovers out there. If you’re a naan fan too and missed my Insta Story, check out this naan step by step guide and video. It’s honestly one of my top ten most favorites recipes I’ve ever shared on the blog or in the cookbook. Naan is the BEST!

Here’s what’s coming up on HBH this week. On Monday I’ll be sharing a new summer recipe that’s one of my favorites, it’s cheesy, and peachy, and just really really good. Tuesday I have a chocolate treat that’s healthier than you could ever guess, then we’ll be moving on to a summer curry, an Italian recipe that’s perfect for using up all that garden zucchini, and ending the week with something extra sweet and delicious. All good things. Very excited.

If you missed anything from this week, you can sign up here for weekly newsletters to stay up to date on all the latest HBH recipes. Hope you guys are having a great Sunday – enjoy all my favorites below!

1. Off to NYC again…

Heading back to NYC in a week, once again, I’d love your suggestions for summer activities in the city. As usual I don’t have much free time, but I love the city in the summer and I’ll have a couple of free hours to explore. What do I need to see? Where shall I eat? What stores do I need to hit up?

Also, whenever I’m in the city, I am at the Soho Grand Hotel and love it. It is so chic inside, the beds are comfy, the views are amazing, and it’s in the heart of Soho, which I’ve found to be the perfect location. Have you guys ever stayed there? What’s your favorite NYC hotel?

Let me know what needs to be put on my agenda for this trip. So excited to be heading back to the city, I love it.

PS. I really wish I was heading to the Hamptons too…

I have never been before, have any of you? It looks pretty much like the picture perfect summer destination. I really need to go sometime.

4. How Much Sleep Do you get?

I used to be one of those people that went to bed by 10pm and was up by 5:30 or 6 am every single day. This was way back in my high school days and way before my to-do list was as overwhelming as it is now. Since those days I have very much become a night owl, and I’ve found that I have a lot of energy and motivation to work into the wee hours, but yet I am still a morning person. I love the early morning hours, especially right now with the sun rising so early and the warmer temperatures. It literally makes me excited to jump out of bed and get started with my day.

Being both a night owl and a morning person means a lot of times I’m going to bed between 12:30 and 1 am and waking up around 6 am or earlier. It’s not a ton of sleep, but I manage. Is anyone else out there working on the same?

I’d love to get to bed a little earlier, but it’s hard. Anyone have any tips/tricks for how to get to bed earlier?

PS. Are you are night owl, morning person, or a combo like me?!

  1. I love your recipes and your “loves”, however I see that many of the items you and other bloggers love are just too expensive for me! It is wonderful that you can travel and shop, but I am retired and on a limited income. Maybe some ideas for people like me could be looked into. I make your croissants, best yet, as well as other recipes and just love them. I am happy for your success and love seeing you enjoy your life. I wish you all the best life has to offer.

    1. Thank you so much for letting me know! I love getting feedback from you guys and I will try to change up my posts so that things are more affordable!

  2. Hi Tieghan! It’s my first time commenting on your blog, which I love. I bought your cookbook about a month ago and fell in love with the photography and recipes. In fact, your cookbook is currently my favorite! It’s how I found you online. Looking forward to enjoying more of your blog!

    1. That is so nice to hear! I am so glad you are loving the book and the recipes in it! Thank you Jennifer!

  3. Hello!
For NYC, I can recommend Artichoke Pizza- dripping, cheesy, huge slices of pizza.
If you’re near midtown at any point, Shmackery’s for desserts/cookies is amazing.
Both are small places and have limited seating, but those are the best places in my opinion.
For sleep, I am a paramedic, so I’m used to differing sleep schedules.
I like lavender tea to calm down, or melatonin when I really need it.
Yogi makes really good calming teas, or I’m sure you could make your own with lavender, chamomile flowers.
A cool/dark room is great for relaxation, and the Headspace app offers guided meditations which can also help to wind down.
Have a safe flight, and have fun!

  4. I’m also a combo! I love the night but I also love the mornings. So I usually pick part of my week to cater to each of my preference’s
    – which oddly works super well with my parasomnia sleep issues. Also really loved the links section in this one! It always one of my favorite sections.

  5. Hey Tieghan,
I hope all is well and you’re excited for NY. I saw the birds in LA when I was there last month and thought they were fun! Haha I didn’t ride one but it was fun people watching, for those who did.
Also, I’m heading to NY on August 3rd if you’ll still be in the city then! I’m visiting my girlfriend (also in soho) before heading to Boston. We should grab a coffee or drink!
Also, I agree with the sleep hours. I’m a night and morning person as well and go to bed around 12am and wake up around 6:30am. Haha my roomate isn’t a fan of my sleep hours and I agree with needing more. I often get a bunch of tired energy in the evening that slows me down (I stand on my phone or hope I get emails). Haha maybe I need to work out of that.
Also, what are your thoughts on tattoos? I want one but am not certain of what yet (maybe a tau symbol or the electromagnetic wave on my shoulder blade).
    Hope all is well!

    1. Hi Kristin! That is so fun that you are going as well! I hope you and your girlfriend have an amazing time! As for tattoos, personally I do not want one but I like the way they look on other people! Just get something that means a lot to you and I am sure it will turn out amazing!

  6. Recommendations for NYC – Chocolate chip cookies at Levain (best in the world!), Salty Honey pie at 4 and 20 Blackbirds, and Italian restaurants Maialino at the Gramercy Park Hotel (melt in your mouth pasta with a lovely view of Gramercy Park), and Rosemary’s in the West Village (they have a rooftop garden where they grow vegetables! Perfect to go when the sun is setting.) Have a wonderful time!

  7. Your photos are such an escape and inspiration for me and how I want my photos to look and feel. You may not be getting enough shut eye, but you seems to operate incredibly well on such little snooze!!

  8. Im planning to make those pork chops for a family dinner party today!

When you’re in NYC check out the north river lobster co. It’s a boat ride on the Hudson with oysters, lobster rolls and cocktails. We just went last week and I loved it. Also, if you are here for the weekend, check out Brooklyn flea for vintage shopping and great food. The Bodys Isek Kingelez exhibit at MoMA is really cool and you can grab a good meal at Dutch Fred’s which isn’t too far from there, (you’re also near 5th ave shopping!)

    Have a great trip!

  9. Such an honor to be nominated for two awards. Congrats to Red!
I love walking around Eataly in NYC. I’m sure you have been there.
Austin has great bbq. Some close early in the day if they run out of food!

  10. I’ve been recapping my recent nyc trip on instagram, but I’ll also say here I highly recommend dining at 21 Club, Amaranth, Fred’s at Barney’s, etc.
