Nine Favorite Things.

I know I’ve said this before, but if you’re looking for a picture-perfect time to visit Colorado, it’s mid-September. I’m not going to go on and on about the weather. Suffice it to say that it has been perfect every single day this week. Warm during the day, cool and crisp mornings and nights, autumn is in the air.

And our leaves are turning! It happens fast, so I’d expect some foliage photos next week!

To be honest, the weather is about the most exciting thing that’s happened this week. Well, aside from our internet being non-existent for two whole days, which as you can imagine, was not ideal. So nothing much new to report here.

I have been keeping up a bit with New York fashion week though. It’s definitely left me with the desire to be there! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to go. “My space” might be more food-focused, but the fashion world has always excited me. Even more so this year than in years past.

It’s funny how I seem to go through phases. I become obsessed with something for a certain period of time and then move on to something else. Design of any form has always been a huge interest of mine. When we started Half Baked Harvest nine years ago (how CRAZY is that?!), I really poured all my creative energy into working to build a beautiful space where people could just get lost trying to decide what to create. But I lost touch with the side of me that really loved fashion and interior. This year I’ve been finding my way back to that love. It’s been fun and has brought so much new inspiration.

I’m excited for the upcoming few months. I have some really fun things planned for October, November, and December! We all know how much I love my holiday content!

And it’s all starting with the return of Cocktail Saturday on the first Saturday of October (just a couple of weeks away). We’re going all out for Halloween this season, with spooky cocktails and desserts. I cannot wait!

I know it’s a little early to be thinking Halloween and holiday, but if you have any requests…whether it be new recipes, menu ideas, hostess tips, or tablescapes…please let me know. We’re going to do it all this year and make the holidays truly magical. We’re already planning out some fun holiday giveaways too!

Let’s see what else, I finally gave Asher her birthday gift, which she loved! Its arrival was very delayed but also worth the wait. She ended up going with a smaller (gently used) Louis Vuitton red patent leather bag that felt a little more fitting for Asher. I wanted her to be sure that what she chose was right for her. She LOVES her new bag and as I mentioned last week, it’s such a special gift that she’ll hopefully have for years to come! She’s so excited, she tried it on with all her outfits and gave me a little fashion show – so fun!

My brothers, Kai and Red, are getting ready to head to Europe this week. Red has a Toyota commercial, a Quiksilver shoot, and will be training, and Kai is filming. It’s been really, really tricky with all the covid restrictions in place, but I’m glad they’re getting to go and can’t wait to see photos. It’s been almost two years since they’ve traveled to Europe!

Coming up this week on HBH… I’ll be sharing the ideal sheet pan dinner. A new game day recipe. A quick pasta recipe. And some sweet September cookies that I’m so excited about – love these. And lastly, I’m very excited to share our annual Fall Recipes post with all the top autumn recipes from years past. I do this post every year and it’s always one of my favorites, so expect that this week!

1. Things i’m loving, wanting, and excited to try.

ordered and love…this Frame Fleece Mix Pullover Jacket. Literally so warm and cozy. I can’t wait to wear it.

loving…this fun chair, especially in the rust, it looks super cozy.

listening to…Morbid: A True Crime Podcast. So I’m not someone who listens to true crime regularly, but the girls who host this podcast had the SWEETEST things to say about HBH recipes in this episode. I listened and then couldn’t turn it off. A fun podcast, especially with “spooky” season upon us.

listening to…Fall Beauty Trends with Breaking Beauty on Life with Marianna. A fun episode if you’re into beauty.

dreaming of going to…Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris. Stunning and I would imagine even more so in the September light.

wanting to try…the Kora Organics Berry Bright Eye Cream. Been looking for a morning eye cream and this sounds perfect.

watching…Only Murderers in the Building on Hulu. This description actually sounds pretty good. Has anyone seen it?

cooking…gumbo. It’s my brother Creighton’s favorite and he’s been requesting it for weeks.

loving…the Olive & June nail polish. And this CN color is such a pretty shade of brown.

reading…Facts You Didn’t Know About the Original World Trade Centers.

loving…this Laptop Radiation & Heat Protection Shield. I use this every night to put my computer on while I work because I love to sit on the floor and work.

watching…Madison Beer’s Guide to Soap Brows and Easy Blush. Unique and so pretty.

burning…Diptyque Feu De Bois scented candle while I patiently wait to break out my first official autumn candle.

drinking…Ginger Apple Moscow Mule. A fall cocktail favorite.

loving…Biossance Squalane Body Cream. This feels so good on your skin and is super hydrating. I’ve been mixing it with my Necessaire Body Oil.

4. Favorite questions of the week.

q: do you have a pot filler in your kitchen?
a: no, but it’s something I wish I would have added to my kitchen!

q: best lighting conditions for photographing your food?
a: I shoot all hours of the day but usually enjoy the light most between 3-6 pm (at least right now in the summer). I usually prefer to shoot with backlight so the window is directly in front of me. Then the food is styled in between the window and me.

q: where do you get your energy when you feel unmotivated?
a: getting outside for a hike either in the morning or at sunset. I always feel so much better after. And I usually get back home with a new idea or solution to a problem.

q: have you found an online store that sells long leafy branches?
a: try Terrain they always have the best branches and fresh flowers.

q: favorite swimwear?
a: we love Frankies Bikinis.

q: favorite thing to do on your birthday?
a: I am not big on celebrating my birthday, but I love something sooo simple. Like a hike with my mom (because we never get time together just the two of us). Oh, and flowers, I will never turn down fresh flowers 🌸

q: who plans these awesome family trips? whose schedule is the hardest to work around?
a: my mom! She plans all our family trips, she lives for them! I’d say my schedule and Reds are the hardest to work around, but everyone is busy. And with 18 some people usually going (my cousins, who are like siblings, always join too) it’s not an easy task!

q: best place in Colorado to visit in October?
a: literally anywhere!! It’s so pretty! But the mountain towns especially! Breckenridge, Aspen, Telluride, and all the small, small towns surrounding. Aspen is especially pretty!

q: what’s your favorite thing about life?
a: knowing that I have the ability and freedom to do anything I want. If I’m unhappy, I have the ability to pivot, make a change, and try something new. My opportunities are endless, it’s just what I make of them! And of course my family.

q: when do you officially start baking with pumpkin?
a: late September, once fall has officially started.

q: what kind of lunchbox did you have or want as a kid?
a: haha, we used brown paper bags. I can’t remember ever wanting a certain lunch box. Was that a thing to have a “cool” lunchbox?

q: how long do you hike each day?
a: about an hour and a half. Depends on how much time I’ve got, or if I woke up late. But I try to get up early to carve out the time because hikes are my favorite thing about my mornings. They keep me sane 🙂

q: does kitchen clean up bum you out?
a: it depends. For the most part, yeah. However, I do sometimes enjoy it. When it’s just me cleaning (I usually have my dad to help) I love to see the kitchen go from disastrous to spotless. It’s quite satisfying.

q: fashion influences? what made you get into it in the first place?
a: love this question!! Definitely my Nonnie. The woman was stylin’ and knew what was up. We would go shopping every other weekend together and I used to spend so much time in her closet dressing up her mannequin. She definitely introduced me to fashion…and I definitely talked her into a few designer bags 💼 We were trouble together. Today I love Who What Wear for inspo, and of course, Vogue, and always Instagram style accounts too.

q: dinner meal you make most often/keep in rotation?
a: Tacos!

q: what’s your opinion on the pumpkin spice latte?
a: I’m here for it. I know it’s a little over-talked about, but I love all things pumpkin spice. Just wait till fall though!! Don’t start in August, that’s too soon.

q: how did you get a book deal? Interested but don’t know where to start.
For my first book, I had publishers reaching out for about a year or so before I even considered the idea. I never wanted to write a cookbook, but something switched after reading an email. From there, I decided to hire a literary agent to help me find the right publisher. I wrote a proposal and the literary agent shopped it to the publishing houses. We had interest from several publishers, so I was lucky enough to be able to pick my favorite! And then the second book came after the first book had success 🙂

q: what literary character would you want to spend the day with?
a: Literally any character from Harry Potter. Hagrid seems like he’d have an adventure for us 🙂 but obviously Harry, Hermione, and Ron too.

question: what Harry Potter character would you spend the day with and why?

q: what are your goals for fall this year? For you and HBH?
a: For me, a little more sleep and time to enjoy life…I love working so much that I tend to forget about everything else in life. Consequently, I’m going to try to focus on outside life a bit more.

For HBH, developing/working on some new things to help grow and expand into new things! Product and more 🙂

5. Six things to do in September.

I’m not quite ready to share my fall bucket list yet, but here’s what’s on my September list in prep for the autumn and holiday season. I know I’m a little ahead of myself, but I’m trying to be organized this year!

1. clean out your closet and prep for those warmer fall items

This is certainly high on my to-do list. I have a lot of things to send off to Goodwill and get organized. I know it’s “spring cleaning”, but personally, I love to start fresh in fall and get organized.

2. hike your favorite trail and soak up the perfect September weather

September in most states is usually a great month weather-wise, so take advantage of these nice days while they’re here!

3. later in the month preserve the beautiful fall leaves

September might be early for some of you to preserve your leaves, but I want to try this out and see if I can save them to create a pretty Thanksgiving tablescape. I have some cute ideas!

4. prep for the holidays

I’m always behind on holiday prep, so this year I’m buying my decor and kitchen items early. Crate and Barrel has some of my favorite things for Halloween (and Thanksgiving), Williams-Sonoma has their Thanksgiving shop already live. I love their triple-duty Staub set and all of their fall Staub items). And finally, Pottery Barn has such cute Halloween decor.

5. make cider, apple butter, and then bake up some apple cider doughnuts…

Or any other sweet apple treat! Here’s my homemade apple cider, apple butter, and then in terms of something sweet to bake: baked apple cider doughnuts, apple blondies, and apple fritters – 3 of my personal favorites.

6. order your first pumpkin spice latte of the season

I’m still waiting until October first to post anything pumpkin. But I kind of think all bets are off for these lattes come September 22nd…have you gotten your first PSL yet??

bonus: this is obvious, but apple picking of course!

Also, if you live in Colorado, here’s an awesome list of things to do within our state and where to see the best fall foliage. I don’t think we’ll have time, but I’d love to get to Telluride to see the fall leaves. And then apple picking at Ya Ya Farm & Orchard (so my kind of fall Saturday). In October, I want to make it to Cottonwood Farm to see their pumpkin patch too.

6. Autumn Content Request + Inspiring me.

Every fall I ask you guys what you want to see most in the coming months to help spark ideas I might not be thinking of. I know we all love new recipes. But with Halloween, and then the holidays, just around the corner, there is so much more I can share!

I’m looking forward to sharing not only new recipes but some more lifestyle content. Some entertaining posts, menus, tablescapes, and fun DIY things for holiday entertaining.

And in Favorites, I’ll make sure to share style inspiration for all those upcoming events too.

Of course, I love to hear from you guys too. What would you like to see this season?

And on that same note, I am so excited about holiday giveaways this year and want to plan some fun ones.

Are there any holiday giveaway items you’d LOVE to see me include in a giveaway?

Inspiring me…

  1. Hi there! I’m a bit new to HBH and I’m loving it. I also am from the midwest and have lived in CO for 14 years. I do miss the fall back in IL so much. And we are watching Murder in the Building!

  2. This fellow Coloradan completely agrees! Late Summer/Early Fall is the best time in the state! Enjoy the turning of the Aspens!!

    1. Hey there,
Is there something specific you are looking for? As far as cookware I pretty much use all Staub products. For serveware, I get my pieces from all over the place. I love Anthropologie, Terrain, Zara Home, GW Guild, but some of my best pieces are from vintage shops. I don’t always have full sets of things, sometimes just 1 or 2 pieces. Please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  3. I cannot WAIT for Halloween/holiday content!! After a year and half of this pandemic, I think we’re all ready to get into a festive & cozy mood this year. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing with all of us!

  4. Hi Tieghan, I absolutely love every recipe of yours that I have made (and so does my husband) and look forward to this post every Sunday! Thanks for sharing!!

  5. Yum!!! Every recipe this week looks amazing and simple. And those apple recipes?! Ummmm yes! Definitely a necessity with returning to grad school after a year of maternity leave and a soon-to-be 1 year old running around. Thanks for sharing! Always love reading each week’s 9 fav things. 😊

  6. Absolutely love all your inspiring recipes and Sundays favorite things. Both my husband and I love seafood and hope you will consider making more and sharing your fabulous spice and herb profiles. Your taste in furniture, accessories and fashion is so wonderful. Where did you find those beautiful baskets hanging on your wall? It seems Ashton is a miniature of you. Love seeing all your pictures.

  7. Another great blog complete with stunning and inspiring fall photos. Reading Nine Favourite Things every Sunday both inspires and sets me up for the coming week, so thank you.
Top of my list for this week is to cook your baked apple cider doughnuts, as they look so good. At this time of year I love the autumnal colours and I know that this time last year your blog posts oozed with autumnal colours so I hope it will be the same this year. In this season I am looking for table set-up and ideas in autumn colours.
I have about 4 autumnal nail colours, which I love starting to wear at this time of year from burnt orange, russet to rich browns from OPI and Essie.
Good to hear that some of your family are travelling again. Will your brother, Red be taking part in the Winter Olympics?
Take care and have a great week.

    1. Hey Colleen,
Thanks so much for reading along! I hope you love the doughnuts, let me know if you give them a try! As for Red, that’s the plan! I hope you have a great week:) xTieghan

  8. Lovely post, as always.

Fall recipe wise, I’d like to see a new red lentil soup (love your one with the coconut milk), a pumpkin spice kind of cookie, sheet pan fall chicken, and mushroom risotto with a HBH spin too please. I asked my hubby too and he says a berry dessert!

    Have a great week. Xx

    1. Hey Kelly-Jane,
Thanks so much for reading along! Love these fall recipe ideas, thank you for sharing! I hope you have a great week:) xTieghan

  9. Love all you do! I’d like to see some fall vegetarian recipes. You always do a great job with them- so tasty even without meat.

  10. Love everything you do!! So much variety, but you have a certain style with everything! I would say more appetizer and soup recipes, if I have to choose what I’d like to see more of. For a giveaway, definitely Goldtouch Bakeware!

  11. Definitely watch Only Murderers In The Building. It really is funny. Selena Gomez holds her own with Steve Martin and Martin Short.
I would spend the day with Minerva McGonagall, Luna Lovegood and Bellatrix Lestrange. I think they all know lots of interesting secrets. Lol
I’m looking forward to you October recipes!

    1. Hey Susanne,
Thanks for reading today, good to know you’ve been enjoying the Only Murders in the Building, I definitely need to give it a watch! Have the best week! xTieghan

  12. Your response about having the “freedom” to do whatever you want is perfect for this weekend of remembrance. Only you forgot to mention those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to make sure you have that freedom. We should all never forget!

    1. Hi! Debbie,
Thank you so much for pointing this out. I answered this question a couple weeks ago on Instagram, so at the time I answered it on Instagram I wasn’t thinking of 9/11 in regards to my answer. But I agree were shall never forget! My heart goes out to everyone who is struggling with the 20 year anniversary and everyone who lost loved ones. Sending out all the good vibes to those struggling during a difficult time. Thank you for your kindness xx Tieghan

  13. Would love to see…

    1. Sheet pan dinners.

    2. make ahead freezer friendly cookie/bar recipe’s for Christmas cookie boxes!

    3. Christmas gift guides for different people (mom/dad/siblings etc)

    Everything you do is magic!

    1. Hey Christine:
When I was 16 my mom and I were hiking together. She was encouraging me to start a food blog, since all I was doing in my free time was cooking. She came up with the “half baked” part because my family is very “half baked”. By that I mean that we’re a little all over the place and a little crazy! “Half Baked” has nothing to do with marijuana, that never even crossed our minds back then. The word harvest has always been one of my favorite words. It brings to mind family gathered together at the end of the day enjoying the harvest meal. So Half Baked Harvest it was! Have a great week! xTieghan

  14. I so look forward to your emails, especially on Sunday. 🙂
My husband loves the box hamburger helper so when I saw your recipe for the healthy homemade hamburger helper I knew I had to make it for him (and for me too because I’ve never had it.) Well your recipe didn’t disappoint! Delicious! I did tweak it a little by using bone beef broth & adding mushrooms. Thanks so much! xo

    1. Hey Alane,
Thanks so much for your kind message and reading along! I am so glad you both enjoyed the hamburger helper recipe, thanks for giving it a try! xTieghan

  15. I am new to following you and look forward to Nine Favourite Things each week.
Made your apple cider donuts this week and LOVE them!
Also, we started watching Only Murders in the Building and it is a lot of fun! Quirky , funny , and interesting to see the characters develop. Definitely worth watching !

    1. Hey Tracy,
Thanks so much for following along! I am so glad you enjoyed the donuts, thanks for giving them a try! I hope you have a great week:) xTieghan

  16. For fall, I would love to see some cozy baked pasta dishes with veggies, more chicken recipes, maybe another ramen recipe. Also, with (hopefully) holiday parties and big thanksgiving dinners, a BATCH cocktail recipe or three would be super helpful! Something we can make before guests show up and just finish up and serve when folks arrive.

Also, only murders in the building is GOOD, highly recommend.

    1. Hey Sara,
Thanks a lot for reading along, I love all of these fall recipe ideas, thanks for sharing! I hope you have a great week:) xTieghan

  17. Hi Tieghan. In two of the pictures from Sept 12th post, there are woven bowls (?) plates(?) on the wall. Where are they from? They are gorgeous!

    1. Hey Diane,
Sorry for the delay yesterday, you should have received the email by now, please let me know if you didn’t:) xTieghan

  18. I’d love to see things for entertaining friends at the holidays. I have a lot of get togethers and I love to cook for them but I need stuff that I can make ahead because I have a small apartment kitchen! So I can’t make everything on the day.
As for Harry Potter characters to hang out with–this is hard. I love to knit so I could swap knitting patterns with Dumbledore. I’d love to hang out with Hermione and talk books, I’d like Harry and Ron to teach me to play quidditch…I’d also like to hang out with Lupin and Tonks.

    1. Hey Emily,
Thanks so much for reading and sharing your suggestions for holiday entertaining. Love to hear the HP characters you would enjoy hanging with:) Have a great week! xTieghan

  19. Thank you so much for including links for places to go for those of who also live in Colorado! Also, the weather…. I would not describe our current September weather as “warm days and cool nights” maybe “towering inferno by day, cool and smoky by night”. But you are right that normally mid-September is the absolute best time of year…. Just not this year.

    1. Omg also in Colorado (Springs) and have to ruefully agree on the terrible heat right now! C’mon fall! Love when Tieghan shares Colorado-specific ideas 😀

    2. Hey Jenn,
Of course, happy to share! Lol sounds like it’s quite warm where you are! Hopefully it cools off for you soon:) xTieghan

  20. I love that you’ve been listening to Morbid! They are one of my favorite true crime podcasts. Thank you for re-sharing some older recipes. I have the tater tot casserole pinned to make for dinner one of these next few weeks. Would you want to do an update to the gumbo recipe? Have you ever tried it with okra???

    1. Hey Chloe,
Thanks so much for reading today, I love a good podcast! I hope you love the tater tot casserole, the updated version of the gumbo is actually in the HBH cookbook. I’ve not tried it with okra:) Have a great week. xTieghan

  21. Only Murders in the Building is definitely one to watch. Steve Martin and Martin Short are fabulous and not in an over the top way as they can sometimes be. It is all in their facial expressions and they way they move and carry themselves. Selena Gomez is lovely and plays the straight person to Martin and Shorts zanier characters.

    1. Hey Su,
Thanks a lot for reading today and sharing your thoughts on Only Murders in the Building, definitely sounds like I need to check it out! Have the best week:) xTieghan

  22. I would LOVE to see your take on pupusas and curtido! They’re not what most people turn to this time of year but I think the combination of corn masa and melty cheese is cozy and perfect for fall. I’m really curious, too, about what sort of fillings you would come up with!

  23. Love these posts as always! This fall, I’d love to see instant pot or one-pot meals that are veggie-forward and cozy. Also already starting to think through holiday treats and prepping cookie boxes ahead of time (and freezer the dough/baked cookies for Deember). Fun charcuterie/snack plates would be a nice change of pace too! Oh, and on the interior design front: how to decorate for the holidays.

    1. Hey Hilary,
Thanks so much for reading along and sharing your recipe suggestions for the fall. Would love to share how to decorate for the holidays, it’s definitely something I love to do! Have a great week:) xTieghan

  24. I love reading your Sunday post. Always filled with great content. Fall is my favorite time of the year, warm days and cool nights. All produce is the best this time of year. You can still enjoy all the late summer produce but get all the fall produce as well. Perfect time to be cooking. I would like to see simple snack idea recipes, for example flavored popcorn, pretzels, snack mix, season mixed nuts. Looking for items that can be prepped ahead but don’t require being heated or chilled. Simple snacks to put out for guest that you don’t have to worry about. Also good punch recipes that can be made with or without alcohol. Your ideas are always great and I enjoy making your recipes.

    1. Hey there,
Thanks for reading each Sunday, love hearing that you enjoy these posts as much as I do! Love the snack ideas, will definitely have to add these to my list! Thanks so much for sharing and have a great week:) xTieghan

  25. Only Murders in the Building is SOOOOO good! I’ve been watching with my 14 year old daughter and we both love it- the humor plus the mystery plus the cast!!!! SO GOOD!
Love all the dark green nail polish colors for fall.
What I’d love to see? I am all about any kind of fall squash recipe. Also, I always love all of the fun Halloween sweets you make. I’ve only ever made one but I love to see them. 🙂
I think seeing what you wore all week would be a fun post, too. I love your style.
WE made your spicy tuna roll bowls with mango chimichurri last night- SO good and easy!!

    1. Hey Cassie,
Thanks for reading as always and love to hear that you and your daughter have been enjoying Only Murders in the Building! Ohh I love a good squash recipe, so will definitely have something to share this fall! Thanks so much for making the tuna roll bowls. Have a great week! xTieghan

  26. Aw i love these posts… i look forward to them every week! So inspiring
I wish i could get on to the williams sonoma and pottery barn websites and buy stuff! They dont seem to let you on even just to look, if ur not from America 😔🙃 ill have to find a way round it 🤭😁

    1. Hey Leah,
Thanks for stopping by and reading along. Ahhh sorry to hear about the sites, kind of a bummer, they have the cutest stuff! I hope you have a great week! xTieghan
