Thanks for joining me for another Nine Favorite Things.

Nine Favorite Things | halfbakedharvest.com

Welcome to June everyone! We’re exactly two weeks out from the official start to summer (and Father’s Day). But I think most everyone is already feeling the summer vibes. After what’s felt like weeks of mixed weather, dark clouds followed by sun. We had the nicest day of the year on Friday and it finally felt like summer. It was so nice. And while I couldn’t get outside too much, I did make a point to sneak outside and soak up some sunshine…even if I was just grabbing some herbs or flowers from the garden.

Yes, we finally have the garden going. Well, greenhouse, But if you remember from last year I love the sound of a garden more. I’m excited for this year’s “crop”. In previous years we’ve only planted herbs, but this year, we’re doing flowers too. Many of them edible, so I am really, really excited. Right now the violas, pansies, and cosmos are all blooming and pretty…and they make me so happy!

Anyway, it sure is nice when the sun comes out and reminds me just how lucky we are to live here. Some photos below! But moving along…

My mom, Asher, and Oslo headed to Cleveland last minute on Thursday for an impromptu visit with family and friends. My brother Creighton was heading back home after nine months away and convinced my mom and Asher to join him. My dad, who normally always, always travels with my mom stayed back since it was so last minute and there is so much to do around here.

You know, it’s funny because growing up my dad and I really didn’t get along. I would have given anything to be in Asher’s position with just my mom on a trip all to myself. It’s what I wanted the most. But in the last ten or so years, my dad and I have become so close. There really is something so special about a father/daughter relationship.

Speaking of which, Fathers Day is two weeks away! My dad isn’t really the type who gives two cents about Father’s Day. But this year I’d love to find something fun to give him. He’s not one of those dads that cares about grilling. And any tool he needs, he usually just grabs himself, so I’m still scratching my head. If you have suggestions for a good Father’s Day gift for a dad who really doesn’t like gifts, let me know!

Coming up this week on HBH, we’ve got lots of summer-inspired recipes with plenty of color. For Monday we have a fun new chicken dinner that’s healthy and perfect for hotter days. Tuesday is yet another childhood favorite (loving recreating my favorite “kid” foods). And we’re keeping things light and sweet come Friday.

Hoping everyone has a wonderful, very chill Sunday. My suggestions? Do something you love today, then light your favorite candle, and take the night off. Or maybe indulge in an afternoon at-home spa day…Asher’s and my go-to.

and then a few photos from this week…

4. Favorite questions of the week.

q: have you ever tried homemade baby food for your younger brother?
a: I haven’t! but my mom was asking me about maybe making some for Oslo. Would anyone be interested in that?

q: do you ever get writers block when coming up with new recipes?
a: Yeah! All the time actually. I always try to push through it. If I do a little outside of the box thinking, I’m usually really excited about whatever I come up with at the end of the day…sometimes it’s just a lot longer of a process

q: what’s you process for coming up with new recipes?
a: It varies depending on the day! I’m not very planned out in terms of creating recipes. I find I work better when I come up with a recipe concept, then work on it that very same day. Sometimes I’ll have an ingredient I want to use, or a cuisine I want to make. Then I build off of that. It always starts small, then builds up. I use colors a lot as inspo too, but it’s a hard process to explain!!

q: do you ever get stressed or anxious about running out of new recipes?
a: Nope! For one, I don’t really think about that. And two, there’s always a new way or a new twist on a recipe…always. I just have to think outside of the box sometimes.

q: any playlist when you cook?
a: Ugh. no! I need help in the music department. I’m horrible about finding new music. I listen to Spotify religiously between podcasts and music though. I’m currently listening to the oddest mix on repeat…T-Swift and Fleetwood Mac 🤷🏻‍♀️

q: do you like to travel?
a: Yes and no! I love to see new places and I love traveling. But I get stressed before any trip. It’s the anticipation of everything that gets to me. Sometimes it worse than others, sometimes it’s barely noticeable. I’ve been getting better the more I travel though! but I hate the lead-up time to any trip.

q: how do you balance being happy with how far you’ve come/setting goals?
a: This s a big struggle for me. I’m always looking forward and never feeling like I’m far enough. I’m trying to work on it, but I’m really not great at it. I need to learn to celebrate the small and big things before jumping to the next. My mom is always on my case about this. I’m pretty horrible at it.

q: one must have expensive kitchen item for someone living alone?
a: Personally I love my Breville espresso maker.

q: your pics are gorgeous! do you use a camera or take with your iPhone?
a: Both! Most of my in-feed photos are shot on my camera. All of my reels and IG Stories are shot with my iPhone.

q: do you ever get tired of cooking and want someone to cook for you?
a: I don’t love having other people cook for me. I’m a control freak and I’m always like “I’ll just do it myself”. Unless it’s my dad. I love his cooking. It reminds me of being a kid.

q: how many acres are you on? so beautiful!
a: 11 acres. I can’t wait for the grass to be tall and the wildflowers to be overgrown. Please summer…come quicker.

q: sibling you’re closest to?
a: Asher of course 😉 but honestly, I love my brothers. They’d do anything for me, and each of them offers something different. So while Asher and I have a super special bond (we’re the girls of the fam, so it’s guaranteed), I’m just as close with my brothers.

5. A trip to Charleston…or anywhere in the South.

Over the last couple of months, I have been dreaming of planning a trip to Charleston. I follow a few people on Instagram who live in Charleston. The photos of the gorgeous blooming flowers, brick roads, and stunning sunsets over the ocean have made me think I need to visit this cute little town soon.

And then, the food! Charleston seems like they have some incredible places to eat.

Have you ever been? Do you have recommendations on places to stay if we do end up planning a trip?

  1. Father’s Day gift, air pods! They are awesome for listening to podcasts/ music while gardening or doing anything!

  2. These are two gifts I was considering giving my husband for Father’s Day. One was an airplane ride over our rural county and the other was a revamping of a closet with new shelves for all his video equipment.
Thanks for all your hard word to bring us amazing recipes.
    Susan

  3. Thank you for featuring a product that benefits The Trevor Project.

I have never eaten anything with lavender before but your scones look delicious. Think I might finally have to give it a try.

  4. Love your site and your recipes! I went to a wedding this weekend at a camp in the Adirondacks and they had the best appetizer! It was a gouda mac and cheese bite… like a little fried ( or baked?) bite of delicious cheese and pasta! I wondered if you would come up with a recipe for something like that!! Everyone loved these little golden nuggets! Thanks!

  5. Hello, love your site and the pictures are pure joy of your food. My son and I go to Charleston for his Hockey tournaments and we can not wait to go back to a restaurant called The Ordinary. It was amazing!! We honestly can not wait to go again!

    1. Hey Jenn,
Thank you so much for this recommendation, will certainly add it to my list! I hope you have a great day! xTieghan

  6. We’ve traveled all over the world and the US and for us there are two places we will go back to again and again – the city of Venice and a small Greek island in the Aegean (Greece is the must beautiful country in the world). In fact, we are retiring next month and trying to figure out how to split our time between the two.

    1. Hey Sheila,
Thanks so much for sharing the places you love! Will have to add these to the list:) xTieghan

  7. I highly recommend the Dewberry Hotel in Charleston, and especially the Citrus Club which is their rooftop bar. That said, there are lots of awesome boutique hotels in Charleston. Food is amazing, but avoid the tourist spots!

    1. Thank you so much for the recommendation Kate, will certainly add this to my list! Have a great week:) xTieghan

  8. Hi
My Favorite Hotel in Charleston is the Hotel Bennett . So many amazing places to dine . Truly a foodie city . Take an early walk before it’s too hot snd enjoy the quaintness of the adorable houses and Flowers. If you want to see a beach take a 30 minute ride to Kiawah. The shopping is fun – so many cute boutiques .

    1. Hey Kimberly,
Thanks so much for reading today and sharing these ideas for Charleston. Have a wonderful week! xTieghan

  9. You should plan a few days at The Sanctuary on Kiawah (a barrier island 25 miles southwest) when you visit Charleston! My family loves the beach, biking the island and enjoying the delicious southern cuisine.

    1. Thanks so much for the recommendation Tracey, will definitely add this to my list! Have the best week:) xTieghan

  10. Hey Tieghan! Two things – my favorite Boy Smells scent ever is Dynasty and it came back this year as part of the Pride collection. It’s the blue one. I am also a huge fan of Slow Burn and Italian Kush, if that helps. Also, come to Charleston! It is definitely a food town. The South is magical, especially during the summer. As far as food goes, you should try some authentic Gullah cuisine and some BBQ. For hotels, Zero George is a luxury boutique hotel that has been restored from an old home. It’s more of a B&B feel. The Dewberry is also a great choice. It’s more of a hotel situation, but it’s gorgeous and has an amazing rooftop bar! 🙂

    1. Hey Molly,
Thanks for the Boy Smells recommendation, will definitely have to check this one out! Also, these Charleston ideas are super helpful, thanks for sharing! Have the best week:) xTieghan

  11. I know Rush was before your time , but Bohemian Rhapsody is by Queen, not Rush. Hope you enjoy the documentary. I just put it on my watch list on Netflix. Thanks to you and your aunt for the suggestion

  12. I would be interested in your homemade baby food! I have an almost 7 month old and so far I have only made the basics (peas, pear, squash, sweet potato, strawberry, zucchini).

  13. Charleston is amazing, but I love Savannah a bit more. It’s wonderful! You should combine Charleston and Savannah on a trip. Eat at Bull Street Taco in Savannah – it’s unbelievable!

    1. Hey Meg,
I have also heard great things about Savannah as well! I hope you have a wonderful week:) xTieghan

  14. I agree with several others that Husk is a must eat in Charleston! Had an amazing dinner there several years ago. Also, give the Rush documentary a chance. It is very well done and they are a band that influenced many others- it is definitely before your time but worth a watch if you’re a music fan in general!

    1. Hey Stacee,
Thanks so much for sharing these recommendations! I hope you have the best week:) xTieghan

  15. My favorite place to visit is Sedona AZ!

My favorite resort is the Ritz Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara! It’s where I got married!

    Love love love your recipes!

  16. Hi, love Charleston but I would not recommend visiting during the summer…it gets so hot+humid you may not really enjoy it if you’re talking about visiting downtown. Obviously there are several islands/ beaches nearby that are great in summer, though. My opinion is that it’s best to visit in the spring when the weather is great, you can still go to the beach and the azaleas/ wisteria are in full bloom. Fave restaurants- The Ordinary, FIG, 167 Raw, the Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s Island. Landmarks to visit- Ft. Sumter, Rainbow Row, you can do a number of house tours in the city, most of the shopping can be found on King St. I know you like candles, so I would recommend checking out Candlefish- they’re reasonably priced, smell great and you can even do workshops to create your own candle if you don’t like something already available in their extensive library. Middleton Place is not far out but is absolutely gorgeous in the spring, it’s been my fave of the nearby plantation options. Azaleas/ camellias, swans/ sheep/ chickens all on the Ashley River. And lots of gators hanging out near the river/ ponds.

    1. Hey Amy,
Thanks so much for reading today and your kind message! Wow, these are so great recommendations, thanks so much for taking the time to share these with me! Hopefully I can go sometime soon. Have the best week:) xTieghan

  17. I looooove Friends and loved the reunion! But I think if you never got into the show, you might not care about the reunion that much. Lots of show references and fun guest appearances and I adored it but it might not be enjoyable if you don’t know the show. That’s my two cents anyway! Curious what others would think 🙂

    1. Hey Kiersten,
Thanks so much for reading and yes I totally understand what you mean about the reunion! Might just have to get into the show:) Have a great week! xTieghan

  18. Belmond, Spectator and Zero George are all great stays in Charleston.
So So many good eats but one of my favorite is FIG.

    1. Hey Adriana,
Thank you so much for these recommendations, I will add them to the list! Have a great week:) xTieghan

  19. For your dad maybe an experience would make a great gift 🙂 I know my husband always loved those types of gifts- spending time with any of his four daughters always brought him a lot of joy🥰

    1. Hey Donna,
I love this idea, thanks so much for the recommendation! Have a wonderful week:) xTieghan

  20. I have always wanted to go to Charleston
One of our favorites is Grand Cayman we like to stay at the Kimpton
Going to try the chicken gyro and chicken nuggets this week

    1. Hey Kimberly,
Thanks so much for reading, Grand Cayman sounds amazing! I hope you love these recipes:) xTieghan

  21. My suggestion for that Father’s Day gift….a handwritten letter about how much your Dad means to you along with a framed photo of the two of you together. Even sweeter because you didn’t have this close of a relationship earlier in your life!

    1. Hey Julanne,
I love this idea, thanks so much for sharing!! Have a great week:) xTieghan

  22. Thanks for all the great recipes! I need to make the sheet Pan enchiladas immediately! I love love love Charleston. I live in New England but have visited Charleston 6 times. We have stayed in a few Different hotels downtown and loved them all. The indigo was very cute with a small patio in the middle of all the room (also free onsite parking) same with the King Charles inn. This hotel has a pool and also free parking haha. The Vendue was the most expensive but the prettiest. It has a bar at the top overlooking the water and it just a 1 minute walk right to the docks to watch the dolphins swim through the ocean. When we stayed we got up to watch the sunrise over the ocean. The one restaurant you must eat at when you go is Husk. Menu changes every day dependent on the fresh local food. So good! Hope you enjoy!

    1. Hey Laura,
Thanks so much for reading today and your kind message. Thanks for your Charleston recommendations, these are super helpful! Have a wonderful week:) xTieghan

  23. Fathers Day gift suggestion: City Bonfires S’mores kit. So cute. And yummy. Bought 2 as Christmas gifts. Nicely packaged.

  24. If you do get to Charleston… my restaurant recommendation is Fig. One of my top five meals of all time! AMAZING

    1. Thank you so much for the recommendation Kate, will certainly add this to my notes! xTieghan

  25. Regarding a Father’s Day gift: Write a letter to him, telling him how grateful you are to be his daughter, & how much he means to you, & how much you love him. Talk a bit about your childhood, growing up, how you relate to him as an adult. It may sound a bit hokey, but nothing money could buy would mean as much to him.

    1. Hey Jean,
Thanks so much for reading and sharing this Father’s Day gift idea, love it! Have a great week:) xTieghan

  26. Share an experience with dad for Father’s Day with just the two of you, instead of a “gift”.

  27. Another great blog with great views and dear Oslo who is the cutest.
When the sun is shining I enjoy taking a couple of mindful moments during the day, sometimes with a coffee, then sit outside on a chair, close my eyes and focus on the sounds of nature and the warmth of the sun on my face, I find it very soothing and it’s also important for us to have a few moments during the day to restore and recover during our busy days.
I am going to start watching a program about Tina Turner, which I have heard is brilliant and Tina is a remarkable woman.
This weekend I started binge watching Friends on Netflix and I am looking forward to watching the Friends Reunion. I am also planning and looking forward to watching Loki.
In the garden, I am now dutifully feeding the tomatoes and cherry tomatoes once a week now and my first dahlia flower (creme de congnac) is blooming, which is exciting. I also have buds on one of my roses (joie de vivre) that are getting close to blooming as well.
Thank you for also sharing the link on how to get longer, stronger hair. I’m of an age where my hair may start thinning, so this link was helpful.
Take care and have a great week.

    1. Hey Colleen,
Thank you so much for reading and your thoughtful message. So nice that you take time out of your day for yourself, that is so important. I hope your garden continue to grow throughout the summer. Enjoy the Friends binge watching. Have a great week! xTieghan
