I hear it’s a pretty cool city. I know they are famous for their cheesesteaks, which I also hear they load to the top with cheese. We all know I like cheese… A LOT.
Since I can’t really pick up and fly myself to Philly to give one a try, I figured I would make my own. I also figured that this week would be as good a time as any to share this easy recipe with you. I mean, hello… talk about the ultimate Super Bowl sandwich. Speaking of which, are you ready for all the game day eats this week?? It’s going to be SO good, and these cheesesteaks are only the start.
But first, we really need to chat about something that seriously excites me.
Did you guys see that Netflix confirmed the Gilmore Girls revival series?
I mean, I mean!!
I honestly cannot contain my excitement! No seriously, like I can’t. I know it’s totally lame to admit, but you guys, Gilmore Girls saved my life growing up. OKAY, that’s totally dramatic, but really, I lived for Tuesday nights! They were my escape from school, family and general pre-teen/teenage drama. And I cannot believe I am admitting this, but when I am having a bad day or I just need something that makes me feel all cozy, I will totally put Gilmore Girls on. Legit truth.
Want to know something funny? My dad cringes at this show. He sat through SEVEN years of me ritually watching this show every Tuesday night and hated every minute of it. He thinks they talk too fast or something, and he finds Lorelai 100% annoying. BUT, I could care less and the good news for him is that I don’t live at home anymore! However, he has been listening to me talk about this revival show for the last two nights during our massive “clean up” sessions. It’s safe to say he thinks I am legit insane… yep outta my mind.
But umm, Rory is coming back! YESS. SO PUMPED!
Oh MY GOSH, I just had the BEST idea. I think I need to do a week of Gilmore Girls themed recipes. Like homemade poptarts, coffee, coffee, coffee and pizza. Yup, totally happening.
Again, so pumped.
Ok, but on to today’s Crockpot Philly Cheesesteaks.
I’m kind of thinking cheesesteaks are something everybody needs to give a try at least once in their lifetime. Even if you’re vegetarian or vegan (have you guys seen the lentil and mushroom cheesesteaks?? YUM), at some point you gotta try (some form of) a cheesesteak, you know? It’s just a classic sandwich that you cannot go wrong with… saucy steak (or mushrooms/lentils), cheese and bread – you just can’t.
When I was thinking up Super Bowl recipes for this year, I had kind of a big list. So I did what I do when I can’t decide on which recipes to choose, I sent my list off to my cousin. She then chose her top five picks from the list and one of those picks were these cheesesteaks (yes, you will see the other four in the next four days!). I gotta say, I’m pretty happy she went with the cheesesteak. Sometimes you just need an easy recipe for a classic… and um, trust me these are SO easy, and SO delicious.
When I made these last week, I had to send a snapchat to my oldest brother Creighton who lives back in Cleveland. Rarely do I make food that Creigh thinks looks delicious, but I knew he would be drooling over these sandwiches. I almost felt bad torturing him with these photos… but then I didn’t, because I am his sister, and I can’t lie torturing him is kind of fun…wahahaha. Plus, he should probably get his butt outta Ohio and over to Colorado anyway. It’s time he joins the rest of the fam. Okay, and I really need another person to down all this food I’ve been making these days. With Kai away at school and Red always traveling (wait a min, I take that back Red eats next to nothing!) there’s kind of been A LOT of extra food. Seems like it’s feast or famine lately!
Anyway, the point is, I made “guy” food… and I made it so yummy!
Here’s the deal. Just throw all the ingredients into your crockpot and let them slow cook all day long. So super simple. When you’re ready to eat, just preheat your oven, stuff the saucy steak into a soft hoagie roll and LOAD it up with all the provolone cheese you can get your hands on. That’s it, then just wrap the sammie in foil and place it in the oven to let the cheese get all warm and melty.
You need to make sure you wrap these sandwiches in foil. The key is to melt the cheese while keeping the bread super soft and moist, so foil is KEY. Of course if you prefer crispy bread, then by all means, skip the foil, but I’m going to be honest, for this sandwich you don’t want crispy bread, soft is best here.
And then of course, fries are HIGHLY recommended as well. For me… and for my family, fries are a MUST, ketchup too.
OH and lastly, I topped my cheesesteaks with honeyed jalapenos. May sound a little odd, but if you like spicy, it is so GOOD!

Can shaved steak meat be used? Or would bottom round boneless steak be better?

I don’t have a crock pot but I did it in an enameled cast iron dutch oven, and put it in the oven at 300 for a little over 2 hours. Turned out perfectly and so tasty! Thanks!

As a self described cheesesteak aficionado, this is a super delicious variant. Purists, especially of the “philly” variety might take issue, but otherwise this was a huge hit for a Halloween party!
I sautéed some additional onions and peppers to add to sandwiches after the slow cooker portion because I like them a little more caramelized.
I want to use the jus to make a French onion dip next time! This time I retained the jus in the slow cooker after removing the steak, and I added red wine, some water, beef bones and veggie scraps and let the cooker go another 24 hours to make a super rich beef stock.

I’m pretty sure you meant a whole onion, not just two slices?

I love all of your recipes and have loved every one so far. This one disappointed me a little. Philly cheese steaks are comprised of carmelized onions, cooked steak, with sides of mushrooms and peppers. The results I had were more like a peppered steak or a pot roast. It was delicious, don’t get me wrong, but just not what I had hoped. Next time I will try your alternate method of pan cooking and not adding the beef broth.

I made this before a few weeks ago, and I’m STILL thinking about it. It was perfection. I have to make it again tonight for some friends. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to make it again! Such a punch of flavor!
