Yes, you guys, chocolate. coffee. NICE. cream.

It’s a thing, and I am pretty excited to tell you all about it.

Not sure if you guys are familiar with nice cream or not, but basically it’s just as it sounds, ice cream that’s nice to our bodies and not loaded with added sugar. Umm, can you say, yes please!?

This recipe also happens to be gluten-free, dairy free, and vegan…and none of that was even intentional. I know, I know, I was shocked too. And even though you might be thinking there’s no way this could actually taste good, trust me…it is SO GOOD!

So, if this ice cream is really as good as I say, you’re probably wondering just how it’s made. The ingredients are as follows…

…bananas: for both creaminess and sweetness

…dates: for extra sweetness

…almond butter: for creaminess and flavor

…cacao powder: for that yummy chocolatey flavor

…Almond Breeze Almondmilk: to pull everything together into creamy ice cream goodness

…coffee: ahhh for that loaded coffee essence!

Just add all six of these ingredients to a blender, blend, freeze, and done. It’s as simple and easy as that. The best part about this recipe, I mean aside from how easy and healthy it is, is that it’s also incredibly delicious. I’ve found that a lot of the “healthier” desserts out there tend to lack flavor, which in turn doesn’t end up satisfying my sweet tooth. But this “nice” cream totally satisfies all those cravings. The bananas not only keep the ice cream sweet, but they give the nice cream a richness that I find very well…nice.

I LOVE the flavor combo of chocolate and coffee, it’s one of my favorite combos out there. The coffee highlights the chocolate flavor SOO well, and when paired with the subtle almond flavor in this nice cream, well it makes this truly one of my favorite, good for us, summer desserts!!

Honesty, this is packed full of so many healthy ingredients that you could totally get away with eating it for breakfast, just sayin’.

Oh, and if you happen to take a finger lick of the mix after you blend it all up?! It’s basically drinkable chocolate with a shot of coffee, and I am so into it…this may be my next smoothie combo. Hmm, the ideas are already churning!

OKok, a few tips for success with this nice cream.

Tip 1: Start with ripe, but firm bananas. You want them pretty ripe so that they give off a good sweetness, but firm enough to still give a nice creaminess.

Tip 2: If you’re not a date buyer, that’s fine, you can replace the dates with a couple of tablespoons of maple syrup. I added the dates in addition to the bananas for extra sweetness. When I use unsweetened cacao powder, I always find that I need to balance that bitter taste with a good amount of sweet. Since dates are my favorite, and they blend up so nicely, I used dates, but again, maple syrup would be great too!

Tip 3: if you don’t like coffee, you can totally omit if from the recipe, BUT if you are at all considering it I highly recommend going for it. As I mentioned, the coffee just works really well with the chocolate and helps to bring out its flavors.

Tip 4: Be sure to remove the nice cream from the freezer about ten minutes before eating. This will allow it to soften and be the perfect consistency for eating.

And lastly? Are you guys an ice cream in a cup or in a cone kind of person?

I will eat ice cream any which way, but I probably love a good waffle cone the best! My mom’s all about cake cones, but those have always bored me a bit. Dying to know how you guys enjoy your ice cream!

In the meantime, I’ll be over here licking up every last bit of melty nice cream from my waffle cone.

  1. Hi Tieghan, have been really enjoying your recipes. I wanted to ask if it was possible to substitute the instant coffee with fresh ground coffee?

As always, excited to try it out! Thank you 🙂

    1. Hey Lily,
Unfortunately, that won’t quite work the same, so sorry! I hope you love the recipe, please let me know if you have any other questions! xTieghan

  2. Hi what can I use as a substitute for almond butter? I’m home quarantined and I really want to make this but I don’t have any on hand!

    1. Hi! Any other nut butter should work great, it will just change the flavor slightly.. Is that possible? Would love to help! xTieghan

  3. 5 stars
We make this all the time and love it! The dietician associated with a local hospitals wellness center even suggested this recipe and gave you credit! One can replace dates with coconut nectar for a lower glycemic index. Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe!

  4. This looks wonderful! I have made nice cream before, and it’s delicious! Even if it’s too cold for me to make nice cream, I totally would just cozy up in a sweater and eat up!

  5. I made this yesterday & it was a huge hit & we had company!!!! I really love how you make recipes on the healthier side or add a healthy twist. Me & the kids loved it, will make again…like right now!
    Lol!

  6. Looks TOO delicious to be healthy, love! I am such a nice cream fan that it’s not even funny. Chocolate nice cream? Even BETTER. And I’d totally eat it for breakfast. NO. SHAME.

  7. I just made this and it turned out awesome! I too, wanted to reduce the banana taste but understand the necessity for the creaminess of final product. Based on some other comments I used 2 bananas, 1 avocado and added a bit extra maple syrup to make up for the missing sweetness of the other 2 bananas. It turned out super creamy and I couldn’t stop licking the spoon. Can’t wait to have it for dessert tonight! Thanks for the great recipe!

    1. Either or would be great! I love the idea of half and half or even all coconut. I think both sound delicious. Let me know if you have other questions. Hope you love the nice cream!

  8. Oh my god I need to try this right now, but I´m gonna make half of it because we have only 2 bananas at home left(because I eat them every day). I´ve made Nice Cream several times before, but we don´t have a Food Processor so it was always too runny. Definitely making this, because I´m sucker for chocolate and especially coffee! Just wanna let you now, your pictures are so so stunning, I´m always craving after reading your posts, need to get your upcoming book!
    xx Kirsten

  9. I just made this and it turned out great! The nice cream mixture did solidify in the fridge, but putting the container of the nice cream in the microwave for a few minutes did the trick.

    1. Hi Amy! Oh no! The bananas are the base of the recipe and what make it creamier and “ice cream” like. My only thought is using 2 medium avocados. I have not tried it, BUT I do think it would work if you want to give it a go. Just use the avocados in place of the banana. Hope that help! Let me know if you have other questions. 🙂

  10. This looks so good! I love that you have such a wide variety of recipes on your site, and this fits the bill perfectly!
Nice cream is pretty life-giving in the hot summer months; I could (maybe) eat nice cream and nothing else. I’m so glad you made it in this blog post! As always, your photos are incredible. 🙂
    Have a beautiful day!

    1. I am totally with you on that one.. nice cream is so yummy & can be made so many different ways! I hope you love this recipe Brynn!

  11. Are there any good subs for the banana? It’s one of very few fruits that I can’t stand but it seems to be in every “healthy” dessert recipe.

    1. Hi Jo! ?

  12. I am definitely trying this out! I never made nice cream by blending all the ingredients, then freezing it. I usually blend the frozen ingredients. I’m excited to try it this way! Also, the coffee sounds perfect in chocolate nice cream. Yum! Oh and I’m an ice cream in a bowl person. 🙂

  13. I LOVE ice cream any way..bowl or cone. I really like just the regular cones the best. I never turn down good ice cream. YUM!!

  14. I love the sound of this as specially as it’s full of great ingredients, so no need to feel bad when eating your third scoop! 😉

  15. Tieg, you are reading my mind! I made my nicecream just last Saturday, but using even less ingredients: just frozen bananas and cocoa. And it was delicious. No need to freeze it, because the bananas were already frozen and they gave the right consistency to the nicecream. Yours appear like a more decadent upgrade. I do not prefer more sweetness, I am fine with bananas only, but I must admit that I am strong cocoa flavour girl – the more bitter the better 😀 Also, I hate the taste of coffee, but on the other hand, LOVE every kind of nut butters so I was considering to add it into the mix for the future.
Btw. Absolutely adore your photos, mine are just ugly (in case you were wondering, here is the link: http://nemehlo-v-kuchyni.blogspot.cz/2017/07/kakaovo-bananova-zmrzlina-cocoa-banana.html).
Cannot wait to make another batch of nicecream, the flavour combos and possibilities are endless!
    Have a wonderful day 🙂

    1. It is just the perfect time for nice cream I guess haha! Bananas and cocao is a great combo! I am really glad you love my photos, but yours look great as well!! Totally loving that you added mulberries on top.. so unique! Thanks so much!

      1. Tieg, you actually visited my blog?!!!! Oh, I LOVE YOU even more (if that is possible)! Thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! It means a world to me, you are my biggest inspiration and I cannot emphasise how much I adore you and your work. You are just exceptional human being. Now I regret it was written in my national language, because you didn’t understand a single word.. Thanks for praising my photos (I know they are horrible), it again testifies that what an amazing person you are.
Wish you all the best, oh and must not forget: I’m looking forward to your cookbook, it will be a huge HIT, I’m convinced about it.
        Take care, hugs!

      2. Oh this is not fair, I wrote a looooong reply and it seems that it does not show from some incomprehensible reasons 🙁

        1. Hey! The reply did show and it was amazing! It is really special to me that my work means so much to you and I hope you keep pursuing what you love! Thank you & have an amazing weekend!

  16. Que maravilha um doce saboroso, realmente as receitas saudáveis em sua maioria tem um sabor nada agradável, espero que essa cumpra as expectativas, vou testar. Preciso

    1. Hi Gemma, I would not recommend replacing the bananas with dates. The bananas are the base of the recipe and what make it creamier and “ice cream” like. You can taste the banana, but it’s not overpowering, so maybe you’d like it? Let me know if you have other questions.

  17. This look so creamy! It has been so hot in Florida, yesterday was 93. Perfect time for some nice cream 🙂

  18. Hey Tieghan, tis looks absolutely amazing 🙂 I’m wondering, do you think this would keep in the freezer for a while? Or will it become hard and chrystallized? xx Eva
